Rain or Shine import calls Ginebra’s Slaughter ‘soft’

Before he takes on San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo, Pierre Henderson-Niles got his first test against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and its 7-foot center Greg Slaughter in the quarterfinals.

Slaughter has been playing his best basketball under head coach Tim Cone, leading the statistical race for the Best Player of the Conference award through the elimination round. The Gin Kings, too, were on a roll heading into the playoffs until they ran into the Elasto Painters and their menacing import.

Henderson-Niles recalled his matchup with Slaughter and the former Memphis Tiger wasn’t impressed.

“Everybody was talking about that big guy Greg, he was soft,” said the hulking 6-foot-8 center on Saturday shortly after the Painters wrapped up their practice session.

Slaughter averaged 18.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, and only 1.5 turnovers per game in the elimination round. His numbers, however, dipped to just 12 points and 7 rebounds while his turnovers doubled in the two games he played against Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals.

The Painters swept the Gin Kings in the best-of-three series.

Less than a week removed from facing Slaughter, Henderson-Niles gets his crack against the most dominant player in the league today in Fajardo in a best-of-five duel starting on Sunday.

“I know I can guard any player in the league,” he said. “Hell yeah [i’m going to cancel out Fajardo].”

“Let’s see what’s going to happen tomorrow (Sunday) at 5 ‘o clock,” he added. “We’re going to see what this battle is all about.”

chief, with ginebra's early exit, will greg still have a chance to bag the bpc award?

Well, it all depends a work ethics. Built in na since U.P. days. Pero I would vouch na sana i coach niya si Greg.

As for KG or Aldrech. Ramos na. KG ang laro parang si Ellis lang. Depends sa gising sa umaga.

jerry would be a good tutor for greg. sayang ang laki ni greg kung di matuturuan.

that was Tim Cone's decision not the players alone. 2 months before the tourney.

Frustration and disappointment is understandable. But,

Dont mislead some fans or give some info's that may cause discomfort. Ang dapat nila gawin ay sariling improvement/clinic or umattend sa mga training camps outside the US for their own personal improvement. Im looking at you Ellis.

I watched with sad eyes the way Star Hotshots played two games against San Miguel. Reminiscing on those past Ginebra true-blooded-never-say-die spirit. Maski ganun ang line up ng Stars and without their top player James Yap, the team played tooth and nail with the great San Miguel squad. Nilabanan nila ng sabayan up to the last minute of play.

Kaso with more heart?.....tgnan nyo sa TnT si troy rosario....

Ang dami ngang former Ginebra players na nag-improve sa ibang team/s pano nabigyan ng much deserve playing time, 'di gaya sa Ginebra na kailangan pagbigyan ang kapritso nung 2 aging superstars, like I said before, thank you for all the championships Mark and Jay-Jay pero mas ok pa na mag ala-Kobe Bryant na din kayo

Si Reavis matindi pa din sa depensa at supalpalan, 'di naman talaga s'ya offensive option, he's just there to get rebounds and block shots and/or change the shots of the opposing players

JJ and Mark, maraming salamat... its about time..

Wala na akong masabi ke Mercado at Marcelo, 'di takot makipagpalitan ng mukha ang 2 eto, Cone should have Marcelo defend against the imports of the opposing team, 'di kataasan pero good post defender si Marcelo. As for shooters, dami na nilang shooters noon gaya ni Intal, Yeo, Baracael, etc.

Ramon Ang..............try natin new concept sa PBA....................trade one-on-one lahat ng players..............Ginebra vs. Star. hehehe.

Ramon Ang, ang gusto talaga n'ya maka grandslam ang smb

Greg ought to work-out para naman medyo magka muscle, malapad lang s'ya pero pag nilaban mo sa mga gaya ng imports ng ros, meralco at phoenix hirap na, pano pag nakalaban na ng Gilas ang best teams in the world sa Olympics qualifier?

Junemar was trained by mon fernandez and danny ildefonso.as of now greg is a tall pillsbury dough boy.

I dont think danny i is available....syempre uunahin nya yung development ng anak nya. Pwede maging legit star of the future eh. Grabe if greg will be trained by benjie.

benjie, i believe, is the 2nd best centre in league history...@ 6'4" he really dominated... saying at nawalan ng gana later on his career due to injuries and other distractions
