Over the Hill? Ginebra keeps fingers crossed as import's woeful shooting a cause of concern By Snow Badua

Herbert Hill has earned a reputation as a poor free-throw shooter during his career. nba.com

HE still has to set foot on Philippine soil, yet NBA veteran and incoming Barangay Ginebra import Herbert Hill is already the talk of the town – nay for the wrong reason.

Hill’s reputation has apparently preceded him, and his poor numbers from the perimeter and from the free-throw line have caused concern among the legion of Ginebra fans weeks before the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Basketball forums and fan sites have been filled with debates over the pedigree of Hill, the 28-year-old former Providence College star whose Achilles heel is apparently his free-throw shooting, having made just 43 percent of his charities in college.

Worse, the Utah Jazz draftee from the 2007 NBA rookie class fared even worse from the stripe when he turned pro, his average hitting a low of 33 percent from the charity line in 2009.

His reputation as a poor perimeter shooter and an even worse free throw shooter has caused trepidation among fans, especially following Ginebra’s experience with celebrated reinforcement Jackson Vroman, himself a pitiable free throw shooter, last season.

With Vroman as import, the Kings failed to get past the semifinal stage of this same tournament last year, losing to eventual champions B-Meg Llamados.

Still, Ginebra officials said they are willing to give the Ulm, Germany-born big man a chance to put a lock on his place in the team when he reports for duty on Sunday.

But at the same time, Kings official said they have enough time to seek out other options in the event Hill fails to live up to expectations. The tournament, which features imports of unlimited height, kicks off on February 8.

The league’s most popular team converge for its first practice of the year on Thursday.

another news that if it pushes through is not as good as it may seem for me....

A BLOCKBUSTER trade that was supposed to be consummated in early December but bogged down after Japeth Aguilar decided to accept a practice player role with the Sta. Cruz Warriors in the NBA D-League may yet push through.

But first things first: Aguilar must come home.

According to sources privy to the negotiations, a deal had all but been sealed that would have seen big men Kerby Raymundo of Barangay Ginebra, Globalport’s Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Meralco’s Jay-R Reyes, and Aguilar switching places in a virtual game of musical chairs.

The deal, sources said, was already on its way to the PBA Commissioner’s Office for approval when one of the teams backed off, largely because of the uncertain status of Aguilar.

Talk ‘N Text still holds the signing rights on Aguilar, whose contract with the Texters expired in August. But teams are having second thoughts acquiring the 6-9 center in a trade until it has become certain that he has decided to go back for good and sign a contract with a PBA team.

“Sayang yun, nasabi na sa akin yun eh. Inaabangan ko nga sana na matuloy yun,” said one of the players involved in the deal who admits keeping his fingers crossed that the trade would push through.

Under the terms of the multi-team agreement, Globalport would send the controversial Al-Hussaini to Talk N Text for the rights to Aguilar, who in turn would be sent to Ginebra for Kerby Raymundo.

Raymundo would then be sent to Meralco, with Globalport ending up with Reyes.

Sources said the deal, which would have seen Al-Hussaini reuniting with college coach Norman Black at Talk ‘N Text and Aguilar reinforcing Ginebra’s frontline, may still be revived once Aguilar decides to come home for good.

At the moment, Aguilar is in Amsterdam for a European tour with the Warriors, and has not made any decision on his PBA future. His Philippine-based agent, Marvin Espiritu, said the former Ateneo slotman is still hoping against hope and waiting for offers from other D-League teams.

Still, Espiritu is hopeful Aguilar will stay true to his promise of returning to the PBA come the Commissioner’s Cup, which kicks off on February 8.

“Siguro after nung European tour nila, first week of January malamang tapos na yun,” said Espiritu of his player’s commitments. “Alanganin kasi na bumalik siya ng kalagitnaan ng Philippine Cup, pero mukhang pabalik na siya rito.”

“Si Japeth naman babalik at babalik sa Pilipinas yan eh. Mga one week from now yan, malalaman na natin,” he added.

Mas may "Jaworski vibe" nga si Pido eh. Sayang. But the reason he left UST is to take the Barako Bull offer, no offer from Ginebra.

Pido would have chosen to join Ginebra; sadly, wala ngang offer and Barako Bull was quick enough to the draw. Let's just hope Alfrancis' style matches that of the Gin Kings. You're right in saying that Pido has the Ginebra pedigree...

Uichico leaps to Tanquingcen's defense after yet another 'demotion' By Snow Badua

January 02, 2013, 01:59 pm

“What can you say to uplift a person’s spirit after being brought up and down several times,” says Jong Uichico when asked about pal Siot Tanquingcen's constant 'demotions' in the San Miguel organization. Jerome Ascano

After word of Siot Tanquingcen’s demotion from head coach to assistant at Ginebra leaked out, guess who was the first person to call him?

Who else but longtime friend Jong Uichico.

“I called him up right away, and told him hopefully something good comes out of this situation for you and your family,” said Uichico, a day after his former assistant and co-coach was asked to slide down to an assistant role to give way to new Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua.

It was not the first time Tanquingcen has been demoted to an assistant role in his long years with the San Miguel organization. In fact he was asked to give way to Uichico himself when the latter moved from San Miguel (now Petron) to Ginebra in 2006.

Uichico lamented that the constant demotions are a blow to a coach’s morale and confidence.

“Syempre, hindi ko rin alam ang sasabihin ko sa kanya. What can you say to uplift a person’s spirit after being brought up and down several times,” said Uichico, who quit the SMC organization last season after his ‘demotion’ from head coach to co-coach with Tanquingcen at Ginebra.

“Ang hirap din ng ganun, akyat baba ka sa pwesto mo … mawawala kumpiyansa mo nun,” Uichico added. “Ilang beses na di ba? ang hirap tanggapan lang niyan. Kahit sabihing trabaho natin ito. Masakit tanggapin yun.”

Uichico, now a coaching consultant for Meralco and coach of Smart Gilas 2.0’s cadet team, also came to the defense of Tanquingcen, who has come under criticism from fans in the three-plus years that Ginebra has gone without a championship.

He pointed out that the former University of Santo Tomas Tiger has three PBA titles to his name and is one of the hardest-working coaches in the pro league.

“Alam natin na Siot performed to management’s expectations. Hindi naman siya basta-bastang coach,” said Uichico. “Masipag iyan. Hindi natutulog iyan kaka-review ng tape. Masipag pa nga sa akin yan.

“Mabait si Siot. Hindi ko malimutan dyan was when I was moved to Ginebra, more than willing siya nun to step down.”

Career plans up in the air as Tanquingcen still in shock after Ginebra 'demotion' By Snow Badua

Former Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen has declared his readiness to help successor Alfrancis Chua achieve success for the PBA’s most popular team. Jerome Ascano

FORMER Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen is likely to stay with the San Miguel organization, but said he is leaving everything to God.

“Kahapon ko lang nalaman, pero hinihintay ko pa kung ano man ang magiging papel o role ko sa team,” Tanquingcen bared to Spin.ph, obviously still in shock over the sudden turn of events at the turn of the year.

A source told Spin.ph the three-time champion coach will be briefed by San Miguel management of its plans for him in a meeting scheduled late on Wednesday.

“Hindi ko alam, kasi naguguluhan pa rin ako. Kapapasok lang din ng taon. Bahala na,” said the soft-spoken coach, who was relegated to lead assistant coach to give way to new Ginebra mentor Alfrancis Chua.

“Basta ako malaki pasasalamat ko sa opportunity na binigay ng Diyos at management. Malaking privilege mag-coach sa Ginebra.”

But a lot of options are definitely available for Tanquingcen in the same manner as his former co-coach Jong Uichico found a new lease on life when he was tapped by Meralco after he left Ginebra.

Tanquingcen, however, declared his readiness to help Chua achieve success for the PBA’s most popular team.

“Sa akin naman kung ano maitutulong kay coach Al kung ano direksyon gusto niya. Syempre tutulong ako kung saan niya ako i-assign,” he said of his fellow UST alumnus.

At the same time, Tanquingcen believes he steps down at a time when he has put Ginebra in a position to contend for another championship.

“At least kahit papano, alam ko papunta na ulit sa direksyon na `yun ang Ginebra. OK na ko, at least, nakatulong ako,” declared Tanquingcen.

“Slowly it’s gonna take shape. We just need time to get everybody in sync. Cohesiveness lang talaga. Kung mapansin mo, nagpaparamdam na rin ang Ginebra,” said the former coach who welcomed five new players to the Ginebra fold this conference alone.

Cohesion was, indeed, a major issue, with the Kings having to absorb new recruits LA Tenorio, Elmer Espiritu, and rookies Yousef Taha, Chris Jensen, and Chris Ellis in the Philippine Cup.

Last season, the crowd favorites also were busy in the trading market, acquiring the likes of Dylan Ababou, Allein Maliksi, and Kerby Raymundo.

But in the process, the Kings also lost key players Willie Miller, Ronald Tubid, KG Canaleta, Mike Cortez, JC Intal, Eric Menk, Rico Villanueva, Yancy de Ocampo and youngsters Jimbo Aquino, Reil Cervantes, and John Wilson.

Welcome development ang pagpalit sa coach, with Alfrancis Chua as head coach I hope na maayos na sana ang rotation ng players nila. Also, alanganin ako sa import nila ah, pucha this early me question na sa FT shooting n'ya, sana lang 'di lang s'ya maging gaya noon ke Vroman na sobrang apektado sa woeful FT shooting na takot na mahawakan ang bola o tumira at pasa na agad sa team mates n'ya. Sana me iba pa silang makuha, having a reliable import gaya ng bmeg noon with Bowles was key to winning a title....

New coach Chua longs to see Ginebra play like Jaworski's fabled teams By Richard Dy and Snow Badua

NEWLY installed Barangay Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua has no plan to implement major changes in the team's system when he presides over his first practice on Monday.

In fact, he wants to see this team play like the Ginebra of old.

Two days after inheriting the head-coaching position from Siot Tanquingcen, Chua bared his desire to see this batch of Gin Kings play a run-and-gun style and exemplify the never-say-die spirit that Robert Jaworski’s fabled teams became famous for.

"I think andun ang strength ng team eh," said Chua of the run-and-gun offense which he feels can bring the best out of his players.

“I want the players to be free, to play their game, to come out of their shell. Yun ang gusto ko eh, to maximize their talent. Of course, I know it’s not gonna be easy,” he added.

More than instilling a new system, the ponytailed coach said his immediate goal is to strengthen the bond among the players of a team that has gone through two major reshuffles over the last few seasons under Tanquingcen.

“Di ko concern yung magbabago-bago ng sistema. But I want to see a group that’s willing to sacrifice and love each other. We need to bond and come to accept our roles,” he said.

By declaring that no major changes in the team are afoot, Chua said it also means that reigning league MVP Mark Caguioa – for so long the heart and soul of this generation of Ginebra players – will remain the focal point of the offense.

"Mark Caguioa is Mark Caguioa. He is the heart of the team," he said.

Chua, whose first foray into coaching was with Tanduay in 1999, said coaching Ginebra and coaching against the crowd darling will be totally different experiences.

“Dati, tuwing kalaban namin ang Ginebra, talagang sinasabi ko sa mga players ko to motivate them, ‘Let’s shut them off, all the fans, let’s shut them of,” he said.

“Pero iba pala talaga ang pakiramdam na suportahan ka ng mga fans ng Ginebra. Malaking pasasalamat ko sa kanila.

“Wala namang coaches o players na hindi gustong pumunta sa Ginebra. Siyempre, malaki rin ang pasasalamat ko sa management sa suporta at tiwalang binigay nila sa akin.”

There's news going around that Toroman is negotiating with the barakos to become their headcoach, what happened to coach Pido? akala ko sya na magiging coach ng red bull?
