JAPETH Aguilar is keeping his hopes up that he’ll be able to play for Ginebra come Game Two of its best-of-five semifinal series against Rain or Shine in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup.

The 6-foot-9 forward shared that he’s dealing with an Achilles injury that kept him out of the Gin Kings’ 102-89 victory over the Elasto Painters on Sunday.

Asked if he’ll be able to play on Tuesday, Aguilar curtly responded, “Sana,” before giving a thumbs up.

Aguilar has been unable to join the team practices since Ginebra won its quatrterfinal duel against Meralco last week.

He is averaging 15.92 points, 6.92 rebounds, 1.69 assists, and 1.0 blocks for the conference.

Ginebra coach Tim Cone said: “He had an MRI, and the initial reading was a slight tear but after a review it was swelling. We're being very cautious.”

“He's been out of practice since our last game against Meralco. He got hit in his Achilles and he had some significant swelling in his Achilles tendon area. We don't know exactly how long he'll be out, we're hoping he can suit up in Game 2.”

Cone, though, lauded his side’s resiliency despite Aguilar’s absence as the Gin Kings garnered support from all over their lineup.

“The best part about doing this game tonight was being able to do it without Japeth. We were trying to find minutes to give Greg (Slaughter) breaks and he did a great job in extended minutes today. We got contributions from Jervy (Cruz) a little bit, Raymond (Aguilar) a little bit.”

Slaughter finished with 20 points and six rebounds in 31 minutes of action, while Cruz and Aguilar were able to hold their own against Rain or Shine behemoth Reggie Johnson in their spot minutes off the bench.

Still, Cone would like to have Aguilar back in his roster come Tuesday as Ginebra shoots for a 2-0 lead in the semifinals series.

“Hopefully, he'll be back for Game 2. But right now, it's 50-50,” the mentor said.
