After a thorough evaluation, defending PBA Fiesta Cup champion Barangay Ginebra has decided to part ways with import Rod Nealy.

Ginebra mentor Jong Uichico revealed this Friday night as team management gave Nealy his release papers.

With the 6-foot-5 Nealy, who left the country the other day, the Kings struggled, toting a 2-5 win-loss card.

“We discussed it (with management), and we decided to release Rod,” Uichico told a group of PBA scribes prior to the exhibition game between the PowerAde-Team Pilipinas and Australia’s Motolite-Hoopdreamz at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ginebra, Uichico said, is now looking for replacement, adding that they have a short list of five players. A decision is expected within this week.

“Rod is really a very good player. But we’re looking for somebody who can really help the team on both ends,” Uichico said.

Through seven games, the former Houston Baptist University stalwart averaged 27.3 points, including a personal PBA high 42 points against Coca-Cola, with 16.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists (No. 1 among imports), 1.1 steals and 0.3 shot block.

However, his failure to get the locals more involve on offense and his inability to play tough defense proved crucial in Ginebra’s decision to release him.

After helping the Kings win their opening game against the Coca-Cola Tigers, they uncharacteristically dropped five straight games before finally winning opposite the Barako Bull Energy Boosters, 111-103, last Saturday in Panabo City.
