COACH AL STEPS DOWN AS SURPRISES ROCK KINGS' 1ST PRACTICE

First, Rudy Hatfield retired.

A few minutes later, coach Alfrancis Chua announced his resignation.

This, in essence, summarized Barangay Ginebra San Miguel's first day of practice.

"Sunod-sunod nga. Nagulat kami sa mga pangyayari," said a source who requested anonymity.

"Sinabi ni coach Al, personal ang dahilan. Tinanong nga namin kung ano ang dahilan, ayaw niya magsalita," added the source.

After the announcement, Chua was reportedly approached by his players, especially team superstar Mark Caguioa, who persuaded the pony-tailed mentor to reconsider his decision.

Chua has long contemplated on steeping down, especially after a reported argument with one San Miguel Corporation official right after the team was swept by the Alaska Aces in the last Commissioner's Cup Finals.

For his part, Hatfield confirmed to pba.ph his retirement although he still refused to give detailed information pending his meeting with management.

The development came as a big surprise to all Ginebra fans who were expecting nothing but good news from the Kings' first day of practice.

Sa tingin ninyo............si NON o si EALA ang dahilan.........masakit daw na pananalita pinakawalan ng SMC management after defeat from Alaska

PIKON TALO !!! I think EALA has something to do with this bruhaha ! Eversince SMC employed this two -timer, disbarred former attorney, nagka windang windang na ang popularity ng teams ng SMC.

San Miguel Corporation executive Noli Eala took to Twitter to address the criticism he has been receiving online regarding recent developments involving the conglomerate's PBA teams.

"Certainly don't appreciate all the hate I'm receiving, mostly unfair. Frankly, many haters are barking up the wrong tree. Still, life goes on," said Eala.

Because of his prominent stature online with more than 21,000 followers on Twitter, Eala has been the subject of criticism for what have been unpopular developments involving Petron Blaze and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Last month, longtime San Miguel Beer star Olsen Racela was removed from his post as coach of Petron and reassigned as an assistant coach at another SMC squad, San Mig Coffee.

On Monday, Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua reportedly announced his resignation from the team.

Rumors and insinuations spread online that Chua's resignation was caused by differences with Eala's management style, although neither party has officially addressed the issue.

That has made Eala the target of brickbats from Ginebra fans furious about the possible departure of the coach who led the team to the Commissioner's Cup finals.

"Bashing people first then demanding an explanation after is so unfair. All this hate because some people believe stories based on conjecture," Eala added.

"This mob mentality needs to end. Just because people don't fight back doesn't mean they've done something wrong."

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel team manager Robert Non met with the team’s players on Wednesday during their practice session.

But the team executive, who currently sits as chairman of the PBA Board of Governors, said there is still no decision about the team’s coaching situation after the reported resignation of Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua last Monday.

“No such thing happened,” Non said when asked if an announcement was made about who will be calling the shots for the team.

He said that the Ginebra coaching staff are working hand-in-hand to make sure the team gets its necessary training for the Governors’ Cup, which opens on August 14.

“All of them are helping each other to get the team in good physical condition,” said Non.

Caidic ran the team’s practice on Tuesday, although he clarified that he won’t be taking over for Chua.

“I’m just helping Ginebra now. But we’re full-time with La Salle,” Caidic told InterAKTV.

Non, meanwhile, refused to comment on the Chua issue.

“We’ll issue an official statement in due time.”

Siot, Agustin may replace Alfrancis

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has started looking for a replacement for Alfrancis Chua who suddenly resigned last Monday as coach of the Gin Kings.

Team officials are not looking very far and are expected to pick one of several former coaches and current assistant coaches among several San Miguel teams in the PBA to take Chua's job.

Sources said the top candidates are Siot Tanquingcen and Ato Agustin, two former head coaches with championship pedigree. Tanquingcen won three PBA titles - including two with Ginebra - while Agustin bagged one with Petron Blaze.

Tanquingcen is currently with Petron as team manager, and sources said the management may put him back on the Ginebra bench. He won as coach of the Kings back in 2004-05 Transition Conference and Philippine Cup.

Ginebra actually started the current season with Tanquingcen as coach, but after a poor performance during the All-Filipino conference, he was replaced by Chua - then the team consultant - just before the start of the Commissioner's Cup.

Chua brought the Kings to the finals but the team was swept by Alaska in the best-of-five series.

The setback forced management to bring in a slew of new coaches to assist Chua. But the coach reportedly felt insulted because he was not consulted and resigned.

Agustin, a former PBA MVP who won a coaching championship with the Boosters during the 2011 Governors' Cup, was one of three new assistant coaches brought to Ginebra. The others were University of the East coach Boycie Zamar and Petron assistant Jorge Gallent.

Ginebra official and PBA Board of Governors chairman Robert Non met with the players and coaches yesterday after the team's practice.

No details were available regarding what Non announced to the team.

The practice was conducted by assistant coaches Agustin, Gallent, Art dela Cruz and Freddie Abuda.

GOOD FRIGGIN' RIDDANCE.

Now, bring back Chua, or as per Bal David... Ibalik si Jawo.

WHILE several names are being tossed around as Barangay Ginebra begins the search for a replacement for head coach Alfrancis Chua, a former Gin Kings star has only one name in mind.

Former Ginebra point guard Bal David thinks the best man to lead the Kings at this time is none other than the legendary figure who led Ginebra during its glory years, his former coach Robert Jaworski.

“Biased man tayo pero tingin ko bagay na bagay si Coach Jawo dyan, saka para maibalik ang old school (na Ginebra),” said David, who remains a popular figure among Ginebra fans a decade after retiring.

“Si Coach Sonny talaga ang kunin. Baka sakali, pwede pa 'yun. Dadagundong ulit ang mga venue nun,” added the boyish-looking cager. “It’s about time. Madagdagan pa lalo ang fans ng Ginebra nun.”

The 40-year-old denied he has been offered the head-coaching spot in the wake of Chua's resignation, a rumor ignited by superstar Mark Caguioa's cryptic tweet that goes: “This is weird but i had a dream about Bal David i miss this guy sya ang nag guide sa amin ni jj when we were rookies #THEFLASH”

The former University of Santo Tomas star said he is open for a return to Ginebra now that he, his wife Yen and the their three kids are back in the country after staying for years overseas, but he was the first to admit that a head-coaching job will be too big for him.

“Maganda rin para sa akin ang bumalik sa Ginebra, dyan tayo galing eh. Basketball yan eh. Mahal natin yan,” said the Cubao-born player.

“Head coach? Patay tayo dyan (laughed). Wag head coach ha. Mahirap pa yan. Masakit sa ulo yan … tatanda tayo dyan. Masyadong ma-pressure,” David added.

“Na-feel ko ang pressure ng coach nung hinawakan ko ang Fern-C (in the PBL). Kung andun siguro si Big J. Basta pinatawag tayo, game tayo dyan."

Meanwhile, David bared that he can relate to the situation Ginebra players are experiencing after Chua's shock departure, having gone through the same low after Jaworski left the team in 1998.

“Ganyan din kami nun. Devastated talaga kami,” he said. “Madami nagbigyan ng break si coach Al eh, ganyan din halos yung sa amin nun. Kaya talagang mabigat sa loob. Nakakalungkot yun.

“Pero dapat move on lang talaga. Syempre may pamilya ka rin na kailangang suportahan so kung magmumukmok ka lang sa pagkawala ng coach mo, walang mangyayari. Tanggapin na lang kung sino ang ibigay,” he said.

SMC SHAKEUP CONTINUES, CHUA ON LEAVE

A new atmosphere enveloped the camp of San Miguel Corporation after management decided to transfer consultant for basketball operations Noli Eala to a different assignment.

In a statement released by SMC, Eala will "help out in the company's infrastructure businesses as various projects are now either in full swing or at the development stages."

"The Company believes that Eala's managerial expertise and experience with various companies he handled in recent years will be very valuable in his new assignment in infrastructure, one of the high-growth areas for the company." said the release.

At the same time, SMC management granted the request of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel head coach Alfrancis Chua for a leave of absence due to personal reasons.

It is not known, however, when Chua will return to the post.

Netizens pointed to Eala as the reason for several movements among the three San Miguel Corporation teams, something which the former PBA commissioner denied.

"SMC assures the public, particularly its basketball fans that the operations of its basketball teams will continue to run smoothly despite Eala's new role in the organization,' said the release

First major post Noli Eala move by BGSM:

PLANS TO ACQUIRE ASI TAULAVA, CANCELLED.

Is this wise?? I mean, after Rudy Hatfield's retirement?

It really depends to what te Bolts wants. I mean i wonder if it is wise to give up anyone now for Asi considering he is already 40.

One or two second round picks should be a fair trade for his rights imho.
