Barangay Ginebra Kings

Pang-gulo lang si Hatfield eh..

Tama, dapat ibang player naman ang idevelop nila in-place of Hatfield

I think hatfield is a bit old para maglaro pa.. baka hindi na rin nya maipakita

ung dating energy niya.

I was watching the game live last night, and contrary to this, Hatfield is playing like he never left. Nataon lang na na flagrant foul sya and technical that's why he got thrown out. But he left with a DX crotch chop. Hahaha.

Jayjay Helterbrand created an incredible winning play in the last 3.9 seconds as Barangay Ginebra squeezed out an 84-82 win over Petron Blaze to start its campaign in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum sunday night.

The 2008 MVP awardee eluded defender Alex Cabagnot then scored on a twisting shot off 6-foot-10 Nick Fazekas at the buzzer as the Kings got off to a winning start in the mid-season tourney after a sixth-place finish in the Philippine Cup.

“The play was really for Jayjay. Pero wala sa coach yong ginawa nya. Sya na ang gumawa noon,” said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen of the winning play made by Helterbrand sending the huge Big Dome crowd to a frenzy.

It was an amazing game marked by several amazing plays including the one run by the Boosters to tie the count at 82 with 3.9 ticks left.

In their final possession with 20.1 seconds left, the Boosters showed so much patience, working the ball around before eventually finding Fazekas who banged away a game-tying three-pointer.

The two teams figured in a fierce battle at the finish after the Boosters gallantly fought back from a 22-point deficit in the first half.

“We turned the ball over too much and we hurt ourselves with those errors. Ang bilis nila kaming hinabol dahil sa transition plays nila,” said Tanquingcen.

The youthful Ginebra mentor, however, said his boys nonetheless deserved commendation for staying in the battle and overcoming the pressure.

“I have to give it to them. They hung in there,” said Tanquingcen.

The Kings squandered a 22-point first-half lead but pulled through just the same while drawing tremendous efforts from Helterbrand, returning import Chris Alexander, Mark Caguioa and new recruit Kerby Raymundo.

Alexander produced 21 points and 24 rebounds as against Fazekas’ 37 markers and 18 boards in their classic showdown.

A legitimate former NBA player with stints with the Dallas Mavericks and the LA Clippers, Fazekas showed great touch, going 2-of-2 from the three-point area, 11-of-25 from the two-point zone and 9-of-10 from the stripe.

Alexander, meanwhile, did what’s expected of him.

“Alam niya kung ano ang kailangan namin sa kanya, at ibinigay naman niya. We have to give credit to the guy. He’s out of shape when he came but he worked to get into competitive form,” said Tanquingcen.

Caguioa led the Ginebra locals with 17 points that went on top of nine rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Helterbrand finished with 11 points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals while Raymundo debuted as a Ginebra player with 10 points and six rebounds.

Chris Lutz paced the Petron locals with 13 points.

Coming out smoking, the Kings opened a double-digit spread, 27-14, right in the opening quarter.

They converted 61.9 percent of their shots in the first period and, though cooling down in the second quarter, kept a 13-point spread, 47-34, at the turn.

Alexander had piled up near double-double number just in the first quarter with 10 points and seven rebounds with Caguioa adding eight markers and two boards. (SB)

The scores:

GINEBRA 84 -Alexander 21, Caguioa 17, Helterbrand 11, Raymundo 10, Hatfield 7, W. Wilson 4, Mamaril 4, Labagala 3, Cortez 3, Ababou 2, Canaleta 2.

PETRON 82 - Fazekas 37, Lutz 13, Santos 8, Cabagnot 8, Miranda 6, Ildefonso 6, Al-Hussaini 4, Reyes 0, Yeo 0, Tugade 0.

JJ13 was playing like his MVP performance in last night's game.

Kerby played a good game kagabi. Despite his age, I think he is still a good addition to the team considering his agility as a PF. Mataas din ang FG percentage nya kagabi. Mas movable si Kerby kay Enrico and Mamaril, plus the fact na mas magaling sa point-blank shots si Kerby (which is one thing na nakakabwisit minsan kay EV and BM).

Ayun lang, he should stay healthy. Haha

Konti lang productions ni Kerby compared to his minutes. Sayang yung oras. Kung matalo BGK for 2 straight games, dapat palitan ang Coach.

Hatfield maybe good. But there are already plenty of players who can play better

Napanood ko ang laro with still about 8 minutes left, i later learned na lamang ang Ginebra ng malaki bago dumikit ang petron, mukhang magaling ang import ng petron ah, bukod sa locals/fil-ams magaling pa ang nakuha nilang import na parang pa ikaw-ikaw tumakbo.

Hahaha. Of course, magaling coz former NBA player for a couple of years yan. Paika-ika? Hayaan mo lang... basta mananalo :)

More practice is definitely in order, saka sana maayos ang playing time ng mga players, I felt that KG and Rico M. did't get that much minutes, its understandable though dahil me import pero I think that those players can contribute and help in their cause.

agree...even ababou can and will contribute if given the playing time.

ang hirap ng malalim ang bench....i just don't know if the coaching staff will still refer to it as a pleasant problem....

imagine... giving everybody the playing time...Fans would love their faves to be on the court and contribute... players themselves wants to contribute..

as for me, i want BGK winning, as long as the coach reads and calls the shots of the game as it unfolds , they should adapt and react accordingly... as for the players, some need to be playing long on the court for them to get their game going, some need to start, some don't mind to come of the bench... the bottomline is... they all need to respond how little or in whatevr part of the game they are called in to, they should deliver the goods.

Para na nga din petron ang Ginebra sa dami ng magagaling kaso mas deep pa din ang bench ng petron, buti nga 'di natuloy ang Lassiter trade.

Magaling lang sa simula si Alexander.

Give the guy credit. It's the first game. Besides, according to Tangquincen, he did what's expected of him. 20 points and 24 rebounds isn't an everyday stat for someone below 7 ft, di ba?

Again, it's the first game. Iba ang atmosphere sa practice games and sa actual conference. Besides, Kerby isn't BGK's main big man, unlike in BMEG. Sa BGK, more on role player na sya like EVill and Mamaril.

It isn't a surprise na guards ang main scoring weapons ng BGK.

Hatfield maybe good. But there are already plenty of players who can play better

That's true for everyone. But for someone that's in and out of the game, someone with his game can help BGK. A lot. In the end of the day, ang gusto namin, umabot sa Finals ang BGK at manalo ng panibagong championship.

Definitely. Ang daming turnovers, at hindi pa ganun ka-smooth yung chemistry and gameplay. Rico M and EVill didn't even play last game.

Same here bro. Ang problema ngayon nga coaching staff eh yung temptation na ibabad sa laro kahit na off night ng player. Pag alat ang shooting, sub agad. Pag mainit, then give the guy the freedom to take the shots. Basketball 101. Saka na nila problemahin kapag lahat maganda ang inilalaro.

Alexander is really athletic. But let's try to observe the following games... if they win against stronger teams

Exactly the point. I'd like to see BGK go up against Powerade, or even TnT to see what happens.

Definitely.

Mas okay lang ng konti sa Petron. Kasi lahat ng ipinasok nung last game, umiskor.

Very nice points Master. Mas lumakas nga naman BGK ngayon. Pero kung manalo tayo sa TnT mas mabuti.
