Also, magtataka ka din talaga dahil kahit napaka-tindi ng performance n’ya sa PBA pero pagdating sa NBA 5 to 10 minutes lang nilalaro n’ya, whereas noon ‘yung isang dating import din ng Ginebra na si Kevin Gamble naging starter pa (yata) para sa Celtics samantalang ‘di naman n’ya natapos ang stint n’ya with the said team dahil pinalitan s’ya..

Gamble played for a month with Anejo Rum. He teamed with Billy Ray Bates in the 1988 PBA Reinforced Conference. In the 4 games he played, he averaged near 50 ppg. But it was the out of shape Billy Ray Bates who couldn't keep up, scoring less than 20 ppg. With a losing record, Anejo management decided to send both imports back home.

Gamble returned to the CBA and scored 20+ ppg in a dominating, 12-game stint with Quad Cities.

In early 1989, Larry Bird was injured. Kevin Gamble was called up from the CBA and was signed the remainder of the season. He played with hall-of-fame talent such as Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, as well as Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, Reggie Lewis and Brian Shaw. Gamble played sparingly the first few months and it looked like the Celtics would expose him to the expansion draft at season’s end. That all changed with a strong, seven minute performance in a road win over Philadelphia. His play over the final six games of the regular season impressed head coach Jimmy Rodgers. With starter Dennis Johnson out during that span, Rodgers trusted Gamble to step in and contribute.

After seeing spot duty for two seasons he assumed a major role with Boston in 1990-91. Gamble played in every game, including 76 starts, and averaged 15.6 points (fourth on the team, behind Bird, Lewis and McHale) in 33 minutes per game and helped the Celtics to a 56-26 record and a return to first place in the Atlantic Division.

Gamble played seven seasons with the Celtics from 1988 through 1994, averaging double figures during four of those seasons. For three consecutive seasons, from 1990-1993, Gamble played in all 82 games. He came off of the bench while splitting time with the Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings in his last three seasons in the NBA.

Thanks for the detailed info sir..

sana next game, si Junthy naman yun magstep-up.. :D

Si Junthy pa, "The Hitman" nga 'yan hehe..

one year yata...

They ought to extend that, mahirap na hehe. But he should also reconsider kung me offer man sa ibang teams, kumbaga para suitable sa Ginebra ang laro n'ya and Ginebra also is in need of a player like him who plays the # 3 spot well..

Ex-Kings import in NBA lineup

By Joaquin Henson, Philippine Star

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Former Barangay Ginebra import Chris Alexander is hanging on to a spot in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 17-man preseason lineup and might just be able to crack the roster when the NBA season opens on Oct. 28.

Alexander was a long-shot in the Thunder’s free agent camp but managed to work his way in coach P. J. Carlesimo’s regular rotation in the exhibition campaign. He has played in four of Oklahoma City’s five preseason games, averaging 1.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 6:08 minutes without a single turnover.

In his best game so far, Alexander collected five points (2-of-3 field goals, 1-of-1 free throw) and four rebounds in 6:16 minutes in the Thunder’s 88-82 loss to Minnesota last Oct. 8.

There are at least six in Carlesimo’s cast sitting out every game in the preseason so that even as Alexander is the last man off the bench, he is at least getting playing time. But it’s no guarantee he’ll make it to the final roster. Alexander is up against 6-10 Nick Collison, 7-foot Johan Petro, 6-11 Mouhamed Sene and 7-1 Robert Swift in landing a spot.

A positive sign was Carlesimo choosing Alexander over 6-11 DeVon Hardin who was the Thunder’s second round draft pick this year.

The Oklahoma City team was the Seattle SuperSonics last season. The relocation was implemented when Seattle citizens voted not to subsidize the costs of constructing a new stadium even as the Sonics’ home, Key Arena, was below NBA standards. Oklahoma City used to host the Hornets when New Orleans was rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Thunder was chosen as Oklahoma City’s nickname over the Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls and Wind.

If Alexander – wearing No. 44 – makes the final cut, he’ll be a 28-year-old rookie in the NBA this season.

Ginebra coach Joseph Uichico said yesterday he’s happy and excited for Alexander coming close to breaking into the NBA.

“I’m really very happy for him,” said Uichico. “He gave up opportunities in Korea and overseas to stay in the PBA. He is a great person and I’m sure he’ll help any team that he signs up with. I wish him the best.”

The 7-1, 240-pound center was Ginebra’s third import in the last Fiesta Conference after Rashaun Turner and Ernest Brown. He averaged 19.4 points, 20.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.5 blocked shots a game to lead Ginebra to the championship. Alexander was first in the league in field goal percentage (.581), rebounds and blocked shots.

It was Alexander who sparked the Kings to a seven-game win over Air21 in the Fiesta Conference finals. In a do-or-die Game 6, Ginebra leaned on Alexander’s 37 points and 24 rebounds to gut out an 80-75 win, setting the stage for the climax. In Game 7, Alexander had 16 points and 19 rebounds as Ginebra got 22 points from Ronald Tubid and 21 from Eric Menk to thwart the Express, 97-84.

Alexander played only a year of NCAA basketball with Iowa State in 2002-03. He saw action as an import in China, Puerto Rico and Spain before landing in Manila after a playoff stint with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBDL.

Uichico said Steve Thomas was his first choice as the Kings import but he went to Air21 instead. His next choice Lance Alred went to the NBA and another pick Marcus Campbell to Italy. Alexander wasn’t immediately available as the Skyforce was still in contention in the NBDL so Uichico had to call in Turner and Brown as interim imports.

When the Skyforce was eliminated, Uichico sent Alexander a firm offer.

“We watched six games on tape with Chris in the NBDL,” said Uichico. “We liked what he could bring to our team. He’s a seven-footer. He runs the floor and can defend. He’s an intimidator. He’s not really a go-to guy but we didn’t need a big scorer because we’ve got scorers in Mark (Caguioa) and Jay-Jay (Helterbrand).”

During the Fiesta Conference quarterfinals, Alexander was invited to join tryouts for the Korean league in Las Vegas. He was also summoned to NBA camps.

But Alexander, a Chicago native who lives in St. Louis with his wife (a psychologist) and children, decided to stick it out in the PBA and honor his commitment to Ginebra.

Chris wants to come back,” said Uichico. “The first time he played here, he couldn’t believe how big the crowd was. In the finals, we had crowds of over 20,000. Up to when he left to board the plane, he told me he still couldn’t believe how we won with so many injured players.

parang walang conditioning ang mga players nila puro injury na aga pa season. Puro kasi gimik

Kaya dapat maghanap na nga new young players na dapat idevelop. Halimbawa, si Cabatu. Mukhang age is already taking tolls from BGK main players (Mark, Menk, Reavis, etc). A healthy Escalona is way better than an injured Caguioa.

Hindi pari khit 35 na prime parin yan just look at CArl malone or Jordan khit 38 malalakas. O si Jawo diba, its more of proper conditioning.

When Mark goes out..usually kasama si JayJay...

kahit sa NBA, players go around lalo na kapag visiting team sila..

back sa PBA, madaming ibang "gimikero" jan..

You got Asi, Harvey Carey, Allado, J-wash, Belasco, Crisano,Mamaril, Danny S, Andy S, Arigo, Ferreira, Cabagnot, Migs Noble and many more.. I even spot racela, duremdes, villanueva partying..cmon..its all about discipline and I do not see them get dead drunk..except for Crisano..LOL

some have mellowed down dahil may families and asawa and mga GFs na.

The bottomline, PBA players go out have fun like us, however they have the responsibility to limit their partying lalo na kung may game kinabukasan or early practice. Usually kapag semis na and important games, you will rarely see PBA players go out. 2 lang naman halos pinupuntahan ng mga yan, The Fort area or Makati and they do not stay up late or even go out kapag may laban kinabukasan..except for Cabagnot who once I saw in jaipur way before..result? 0 pts vs Ginebra...this was in his rookie year..lol. And he was not even drinking..the fellow was just checkin out tha ladies..baka after that..lumambot na tuhod..lol.

So let us not blame the gimiks for the injuries..its natural wear and tear..and how you manage to keep yourself in condition...SEE THEM PRACTICE..and they PRACTICE HARD.. this goes out for ALL the PBA players.

(one tip is to ice your knees..or better yet, dip yourself in ice thigh deep for a few minutes, this helps lessen the sores of muscles due to wear and tear..this can be done after the game.)

Anyway...

35 is prime? not really... actually its the prime age of retirement in basketball..

Generally the Prime age for basketball ranges from 22-30. to be more specific we can say na 26-29 only a handful of players are able to maintain their "prime" way over 35. depende na talaga yan sa players and their training and history of injuries..in the NBA when you reach 32-33 considered old ka na..and usually players retire at the age of 35. Unless kasing tibay ka ni Horry, malone (who won mvp at 36) or ni Jawo, Guidaben or si kareem. Lol..sam cassell is 39..imagine that...

Nash is 34 and is playing good, pero patapos na prime nya... si Billups at 32 is considered "old" so is rasheed wallace and antonio mcdyess at 34.

Chris webber? retired at 35

Kobe became MVP at 29 now is 30.

As for Ginebra, I agree with Archdevil, its time to get young guns ...29 na si Mark and 31 na si JayJay and they may be good for 3-4 yrs na lang.

The thing is, some other teams are slowly getting younger players (thru draft, trades at sa free agent pool) in rebuilding their rosters, alaska is a young team except maybe for cariaso and ferriols, tnt is also another young team, kumbaga they have young players that they slowly develope just look at Thoss, laki ng improvements n'yan kesa noong unang pasok n'ya sa PBA..

JUN-JUN CABATU: PLAYING OUT OF DAD’S SHADOWS

Player of the Week October 6 to 12

Tuesday, 14 October 2008

Image

SANTIAGO “Junjun” Cabatu, Jr. is a chip off the old block.

This the 24-year-old forward proved by dishing out a career game last Sunday to help lift Barangay Ginebra over Air21 last Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup and prop the injury-plagued Kings’ surprising surge to a share of the lead.

The son of former 12-year pro “Sonny” also earned for himself the honors as the KFC/Accel PBA Press Corps’ Player of the Week for the period October 6-12, for good reason.

The younger Cabatu was directly hired by Welcoat in 2006 before being shipped to Alaska last season and then landed a spot at Barangay Ginebra only after passing a tryout conducted by head coach Jong Uichico.

“We decided on getting Junjun,” related Uichico. “We knew magiging malaking tulong siya because for a big guy he can shoot the ball really well.”

The 6-foot-4 Cabatu proved the trust on him was well-founded by scoring a career-high 23 points and leading the Kings over the Express, 101-92, and giving the perennial crowd-favorites a 2-0 win-loss record and a tie for the lead with Rain or Shine and Alaska.

That is already quite an achievement for the Kings since they first won over defending champion Sta. Lucia Realty, 89-86, Wednesday last week despite playing minus injury-stricken stalwarts Mark Caguioa, Billy Mamaril, Rafi Reavis and Junthy Valenzuela.

Valenzuela returned last Sunday, but it was Eric Menk’s turn to sit it out following a hamstring injury.

To make matters worse, Alex Crisano was hit by a strained calf muscle early in the second half against the Express.

Cabatu then took the time to unload his points that were anchored on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point area, 5-of-8 from two-point land and 1-of-2 from the stripe. He also came through with six rebounds, five assists and two steals along the way.

“He makes our offense look good because he can make the open shot,” said Uichico of Cabatu, who pumped in two of his triples in a lethal assault that had the Kings breaking loose from a 90-91 count in the last four minutes of play.

Junjun’s performance actually came just two days after his father celebrated his 48th birthday and was two point shy of equaling his Dad’s career-high in scoring in a 12-year career that included a stint with Ginebra from 1992 to 1995. (NCo)

opinyon ko lang sa current roster ng BGK..is that....

sinasagad nila ung playing "prime years" ng mga players nila to satisfy the needs of the fans...

gusto naman nating lahat maging masaya dba....kumbaga ...habang kaya pa nila at jell pa rin ung team let it stay that way.....

mahirap din pagplanuhan ang future ng ganon ganon na lang....saka wag tayo magalala, andami nating sister team na for sure willing to give up their players

for the benefit of the GINEBRA REPUBLIC.... jan ang COKE, MAGNOLIA at Purefoods....

teka question muna..sensha na at dko tlga alam...

ano na nangyari kay HATFIELD???

nagpakasal lang dna bumalik!?!? ano un?!?! nagipon lang ng pera?!?!!?

whats the real score on him!?!?!

HATFIELD personal matters ang problema why hindi na sya bumalik ng BGK... is like ayaw nung asawa sa PINAS kinda!

Regarding Gimiks... Yung major injury ni MENK was happen during a club fight with son of a politician. so gimiks mapapalapit ka sa gulo or hindi nga ikaw magsimula malamang madamay k lng...

Desiplina lng talaga ang kailangan...
