Best Nation In Basketball

Recommended Posts

Flashback : The game of basketball was created with the objective of shooting a ball through a basket. The "basket" word in basketball serves for a purpose and that is the basket keeps the ball shot through it from going astray. This basket was put atop so that people can shoot through it while being defended.

Now : People have grown taller and those with high leaping abilities are able to reach the basket and dunk the ball, not necessarily shooting through it. "Basket" is no longer serving a purpose for these people who are just jumping and dunking.

In the Beijing Olympics, it was obvious that the US Team got through victories by jumping are reaching the goal and slamming it. Their perimeter shooting field goal %, however, left much to be desired and is below than that of most other teams.

So, the short answer is US Team can not be called the best basketball team in the pure sense of the word. They may be called the best ringball team.

To know the best basketball team, the "basket" should be elevated about 2 feet higher, thus making perimeter shooting the key to offense. This also levels the playing field by taking away leaping abilities as an undue advantage of the US ballers. Then, let's see who will win.

^if it's tough for any person to shoot given the current height of the ringm, it'll be even tougher if you elevate it higher.

Make it 2 feet higher and your 3pt field goal of 30% will definitely be lower.

Just try shooting at elevated rings at disneyland. your FG will definitely be lower.

The dimensions of the game gives taller players the advantage. But you still need speed, passing, teamwork, bit of physicality/strength.

It's overall. The US have got players with good shooting and inside presence. They've got the right mix.

Even if you raise the ring, I believe the results will be the same. Still USA.

Pure sense of the word, i think James Naismith would disagree with you. I do not believe it is just shooting. If it is, then it would be boring and be an individual sport.

Make it a free throw shooting contest then or 3 pt shooting contest where people like Shaq will probably lose.

^ speed, passing and teamwork would definitely be way that NON-US teams can play at par with the US team.

shooting as you said will be harder, and that is where US is weaker. so advantage other countries (go Italy!)

but unless made, nobody will know who will win with this, it may be US, it may be Spain, it may be NU Bulldogs.

I agree though that dunks and slamma jama makes the game really exciting. im just saying that US team is the best ringball team in the world right now haha.

^Vince was able to dunk over a 7 footer in the olympics :)

Kung ipagbawal ang dunks, elevated rings -pero kung allowed pa din ang lay-ups, yan ang gagamitin ng most teams. higher percentage shot di ba? close range...

Watch netball, no outside shooting even just close range shots where the center/forward are almost always the scorers. baka ito ang definition mo ng basketball. If ganito, then it's Australia ang best nation. :)

The dimensions do matter. Create a league with shorter players who can't dunk. :) Taller players have a little bit of a harder time at the free throw line coz the ball is tiny for them. Smaller balls naman allows shorter guys with smaller hands to do what those tall guys with big hands.

Sorry na lang tayo unless you want to give a height limit. That's what we do in our leagues (even MTC). Only 2 6 footers non over 6'3 or something like that para medyo level ang playing field.

US even created SLAMBALL with trampolines na puro dunking, with little or no shooting.

US pa rin. Kaya nung Olympics nag small ball sila dahil doon nag champion ulit sila.

USA is still specialy now that theyve change their recruitong process and players are actually have passion to play for the country unlike the 00 & 04 team where they just pick all the superstars and they thought theyll just run over all the countries like before....plus the 3 year player commitments helps the players to be familiar wit each others game as a team & they actually play defense now

US still...best athletes in the world..

Spain - for me - would be the next best thing....a continuous influx of young talent and of course their veterans...

case in point, Rubio, Calderon, Gasol Jr, Fernandez then there's papi Jimenez to guide them

Argentina (and Greece to a certain extent) had its run, but they failed to back up the results of their vets with young talent

USA.

But if USSR is still a country as a whole. Malakas na team ito. Formidable opponent for the Dream team.

true. imagine a unified teams of russians, lithuanians, serbs, yugos, the old yet tough as a rock kazakhs....... vs US..

that's always a nuclear war waiting to happen. in this case, USSR ako.
