Archus
Movie Review: Top Gun: Maverick Directed by Joseph Kosinski Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5) The standout aspect of Top Gun: Maverick is undoubtedly the aerial combat scenes. The filmmakers have pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved on screen, using real planes and a groundbreaking approach to filming that immerses the audience in the cockpit alongside the pilots. The intensity of these sequences leaves your heart racing, combining breathtaking visuals with a pulse-pounding soundtrack that includes the iconic "Danger Zone." Cruise delivers a quintessential performance as Maverick, embodying the character’s complexity, from his bravado to his vulnerability. The supporting cast, including Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin and Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Cyclone, add solid performances that enrich the narrative. Each character feels well-developed, contributing to the film's emotional stakes. The film does an excellent job of balancing nostalgia with innovation. While there are plenty of callbacks to the original—such as familiar characters, quotes, and even a few melodic riffs from the original score—it also stands on its own. Newcomers can enjoy the story without feeling lost, making it accessible to both die-hard fans and those unfamiliar with the franchise. However, the pacing can feel uneven at times, especially in the second act where character development occasionally takes precedence over action. While this allows for deeper emotional connections, some viewers might crave more adrenaline-fueled moments. Overall, Top Gun: Maverick is a triumphant return to the skies that pays homage to its predecessor while carving out its own identity. It’s a spectacular blend of nostalgia, action, and heart, reminding us why we fell in love with Maverick and the world of fighter jets in the first place. Whether you’re a fan of the original or just looking for an exhilarating cinematic experience, Top Gun: Maverick is a must-see that proves some legends never fade. Quote Link to comment
HimuraButosay
The Substance The Substance to be a refreshingly bold and ambitious piece of moviemaking. Did it run a little long in the end? Yes. Every cow has its spots. I exited The Substance, and my only gripe was “eh, they could have tightened up that third act”. The overarching message that smacks you right in the face didn’t feel as obnoxiously heavy-handed as I had expected going in. The fairytale like quality of the story and the dreamlike version of Hollywood allows for the audience buy-in completely because you aren’t as worried about logistical nitpicks like how these two lead characters can just disappear from the world for seven days at a time without raising any eyebrows. I don’t care how lonely you are or if you are a scientific creation, someone will ask “what’s up with Elisabeth/Sue”. And also, how in the hell does this substance actually work. No. You won’t be thinking about that. The story is able to breathe because of this deeply disturbing and beautifully groovy world that is built, and the incredible performances that bring it all to life.
