Fitbit has updated its iOS app with a new feature called MobileTrack, which promises "basic" activity tracking on iPhone 5S even if you don't currently own a Fitbit device. MobileTrack likely taps into Apple's M7 chip — exclusive to the iPhone 5S (and new iPads) — which keeps track of a user's movements and allows easy retrieval of that data without sacrificing battery life. For Fitbit, direct on-device tracking serves as a powerful counterpunch to other iOS fitness apps that require no extra hardware.

 

It's also an enticing way to bring new customers into the Fitbit ecosystem; users can sample Fitbit's app before spending money on a dedicated tracker. Nike has adopted a similar strategy with the launch of Nike+ Move for iOS. The app offers an easy way to get started with Nike's fitness platform — even if you're reluctant to spend $150 on a FuelBand. Apple says never worked with NSA on iPhone hacks

 

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc has never worked with the U.S. National Security Agency and is unaware of efforts to target its smartphones, the company said in response to reports that the spy agency had developed a system to hack into and monitor iPhones.

 

Germany's Der Spiegel reported this week that a secretive unit of the NSA, which is under fire for the extent and depth of its spying programs around the world, makes specialized gear and software to infiltrate and monitor a plethora of computing devices, including mobile phones.

 

The report included an NSA graphic dated 2008 that outlined a system in development called DROPOUTJEEP, described as a "software implant" that allows infiltrators to push and pull and retrieve data from iPhones such as contact lists. Der Spiegel referred to it as a "trojan," or malware that helps hackers get into protected systems.

 

The report, which surfaced on Sunday, did not suggest that Apple had cooperated with the U.S. spying agency on so-called backdoors.

 

In a statement issued Tuesday, the NSA did not comment on any specific allegations but said that its interest "in any given technology is driven by the use of that technology by foreign intelligence targets."

 

"The United States pursues its intelligence mission with care to ensure that innocent users of those same technologies are not affected," the agency added.

 

The iPhone was a relatively innovative gadget in 2008. It hit the market in 2007 and proceeded to help revolutionize the mobile phone industry.

 

"Apple has never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone. Additionally, we have been unaware of this alleged NSA program targeting our products," the company said in a statement.

 

"We will continue to use our resources to stay ahead of malicious hackers and defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who's behind them."

Simply swipe two fingers across the keyboard. This displays a different keyboard, which allows you to type with your thumbs the same way you type on your iPhone.

 

***Alternatively, you can press the “dock and merge” button in the bottom righthand corner of the keyboard and drag up. The keyboard will turn into thumb mode, and you can also drag it wherever you want.

 

 

2. If you put your phone on airplane mode, it will charge twice as fast.

While you’ve still got internet access, go to the area you want to save. In the search bar, type “ok maps” and the map will be cached for offline use.

Guided Access, once turned on, keeps users from errantly clicking or tapping within an app and ending up someplace they’re not supposed to be, or deleting something accidentally.

 

First, you need to go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access and turn it on. You’ll also want to turn on the Accessibility Shortcut.

 

Triple-click the home button in whichever app you want to turn it on for. From here, you can select any buttons that you don’t want clicked. Or you can also disable the home button while keeping the touchscreen on.

 

6. Take selfies using the remote on your earbuds.

 

Just click the volume + button on the remote on your Apple or Apple-compatible earbuds while in camera mode to click and shoot, or the middle button (play/pause) while in video mode.

 

No more selfie arm!

 

 

7. Quickly get to the Camera app without having to unlock your phone.

 

Swipe up on the little camera icon in the bottom right corner of your home screen. The Camera app will open, bypassing the unlock screen.

Inverting your colors will turn the screen black and the text white for less eye strain. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility. Turn on “Invert Colors.”

A lot of people don’t even know how malleable that bottom dock is. You can fit a couple extra apps in there (the default is four, but it fits six) or swap apps in and out. Just click any app and hold until you get the jiggly icons.

 

And you can move folders into the dock as well. Your most important apps are always just two clicks or fewer away.

 

13. When ending a sentence, instead of typing a period and then a space, just tap the space bar twice.

 

Tapping the space bar twice adds a full stop, a space, and capitalizes the next letter. It may not seem like much, but when you’re composing a lengthy message, this little hack will really improve the speed of your typing once it becomes second nature.

 

 

14. With the remote of your earbuds, you can go to the next track or the previous track while listening to music or podcasts.

 

This should work with any Apple-compatible earbuds with a remote.

 

 

15. Use this little trick when you want to go back and forth between the alpha and numeric keyboard.

 

Like, maybe you want to type a password that is a mix of letters and numbers. Click the “123” button and slide up to the character you want to input. When you let go, the screen will jump back to the alphabet keyboard.

 

16. Swipe right to left to banish a banner notification.

Have you ever cracked your iPhone screen? If you're embarrassed to answer “yes,” don't worry, you're not alone.

 

Since 2007, Americans have spent $6 billion on replacement iPhones. The main reason behind the screens cracking is because they aren't protected properly.

 

When looking for an iPhone case, there are a slew of products that promise to keep your phone protected. But which one is best? Is a high-tech, expensive case better than a case that costs $10?

 

ABC News compared an Otterbox case that costs roughly $90 to a generic $10 gel case. Tests included dropping the phone from six-and-a-half feet in the air, which did not damage either screen, and driving over the protected phones with an SUV, which also didn’t damage the screens.

 

It wasn't until a phone was dropped without a case that a screen cracked.

 

While screens can crack under various, individual circumstances, the most important thing to look for when picking out a new phone case is that the edge is higher than the screen. If it is, chances are the edge will hit the floor, not the screen.

Apple on Friday announced a new program that invites millions of iPhone users across 37 different countries to swap out their iPhone chargers, which may be faulty. According to Apple's website, the company has determined that one of its iPhone charger models can potentially overheat and pose a safety risk. Apple says overheating only occurs in rare cases, but it apparently decided to play it safe and offer users the opportunity to swap affected chargers out for newer models.

 

Of note, chargers that ship with newer iPhone models are not affected by this potential issue. According to Apple, only model A1300 chargers that shipped with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S pose a potential risk.

 

"Apple has voluntarily introduced a program for customers to exchange the Apple 5W European USB Power Adapter which came with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models through September 2012, because in rare cases the adapter may overheat and pose a safety risk," the company said in a statement.

The world just recently got its first glimpse at Apple’s next-generation iOS 8 mobile software, and we took an in-depth look at iOS 8 earlier this week. As great as all the new features look, there are still dozens of iOS 7.1 features you don’t know about. You shouldn’t worry about it too much, though — mobile software packs so many features these days that it’s impossible to figure them all out.

 

While developers (and anyone else willing to pay $100 a year for a developer account) have already gotten their hands on an early version of Apple’s new iOS 8 software, most iPhone and iPad users will have to wait until this fall before they can get install iOS 8 on their devices.

 

In the meantime, perhaps we can help make your iPhone feel new again with these 10 awesome iOS 7.1 features you might not have known about.

 

 

Number Key Shortcuts

Flipping back and forth between the letter keyboard and the number keyboard isn’t exactly taxing, but sometimes it can be a pain when you only need to type a single digit or symbol.

 

To speed things up, tap and hold on the “123” key and then slide your finger to the number or symbol you’re looking for.

 

When you release your finger, the appropriate number or symbol will be inserted and the keyboard will automatically switch back to the letter panel.

 

 

Built-in Level

Did you know that you iPhone ships with a built-in level?

 

Whether you’re hanging a picture or evening out a table, levels are obviously invaluable. They’re also very hard to come by unless you feel like digging through closets and garages.

 

Try this instead: open your iPhone’s compass app and swipe the screen to the left.

 

Voila!

 

 

Head Gesture Controls

Apple’s accessibility features have always been a cut above other mobile platforms, but did you know that beginning with iOS 7, Apple introduced gesture controls that can be performed with your head?

 

Open the Settings app and go to General > Accessibility > Switch Control.

 

Now tap “Switches” and set the camera as the source.

 

With that, you can set a left head gesture and a right head gesture to each perform specific functions. For example, shaking your head to the left might simulate a home button tap and shaking your head to the right might open the app switcher interface.

 

 

Shake to Undelete

Most people know that you can shake the iPhone to undo typing or other editing events, but did you know that you can also shake to undelete an email?

 

The next time you accidentally move an important email to the trash in Apple’s Mail app, simply shake your phone. A pop-up menu will appear and you’ll be able to undo the delete with a single tap.

 

 

Noise Cancellation

Noise cancellation isn’t just for iPhone 5s owners anymore.

 

With iOS 7.1, Apple made additional noise cancellation features available on earlier iPhone models as well.

 

In the Settings app, just go to General > Accessibility and then tap the toggle next to Phone Noise Cancellation.

 

 

Tap to Scroll

Many users take the tap to scroll shortcut for granted, but you would be shocked to learn how many times we see people angrily and violently scrolling up a long page.

 

People… there is a better way.

 

On just about any scrollable screen on the iPhone, simply tap the status bar at the top of the screen where the time is.

 

Presto! You’re at the top of the page.

 

 

Bring Buttons Back

Apple ditched standard buttons in iOS 7 in favor of text-only labels that left many people wondering where tap targets went. With iOS 7.1, you can bring them back.

 

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility and toggle “Button Shapes” to on.

 

Now, as you might have guessed, your buttons will have shapes again.

 

 

Web Address Shortcuts

Here’s another one that has been around forever but that countless people don’t know about.

 

When typing a URL into the address bar in Safari — or in any other field that calls for a URL — there is no need to type out top-level domains like “.com” and “.net.”

 

Instead, just tap and hold on the period button and after a moment, and bunch of commonly used options will pop up.

 

 

Disable Annoying Parallax Effect

The parallax effect Apple introduced with iOS 7 was awesome… for about 2 minutes. Now it’s just annoying.

 

There are some areas of the iOS 7.1 interface where parallax cannot be disabled, but the most annoying areas can be taken care of by adjusting a simple setting.

 

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility and then toggle “Reduce Motion” to on.

 

Now, simply go to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness and tap on your lock screen wallpaper, then turn“Perspective Zoom” off. Do the same thing on your home screen wallpaper and you’re all set.

 

 

Improve iOS Visibility

iOS 7.1 has terrific options that help make the screen more visible. These options aren’t just for people with poor vision, either — some of Apple’s visibility options are useful for everyone.

 

Here are some examples:

 

In Settings > General > Accessibility > Larger Text, you can increase font sizes across the interface.

 

Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast will make it easier to see UI elements in many areas, and there are three individual options that help you fine-tune this tweak:

 

“Reduce Transparency” will remove transparency effects on the home screen dock, folder backgrounds, Control Center and Notification Center.

 

“Darken Colors” will darken all of the colors on the device’s display.

 

“Reduce White Point” will make whites on the screen less bright.
