Arsenal 2-0 Juventus

@Highbury

40' Fabregas

69' Henry

Kinain ko din yung pinost ko pero one thing na sinabi ko for Arsenal to win they would need great games from Henry&Fabregas..looks like hope is still alive for the Gunners to win a trophy for this year..

Barcelona 0-0 Benfica

@Estadio da Luz

a 0-0 affair brought by several players hitting the woodwork of Benfica's goal, several chances to score by Ronaldinho, Larsson, Deco & Van Bommel & great saves from the Benfica keeper, Moretto, have set the stage for a possible Benfica upset in the Nou Camp on April 2..

the 2nd leg of both matches will be on April 2..

next matches..Inter Milan vs Villareal & Lyon vs AC Milan..

match prediction: both Italian sides winning, inter 1-0 winners, ac milan 2-1 winners..

parang SMB-Ginebra yan... parehong sister teams, nakakawalang gana...

boring nga kung all italian final..dapat ang magkikita sa finals galing ng magkaibang league..feeling ko 1 spot is reserved for Barcelona..feeling ko magkikita sa finals, Barcelona vs. AC Milan..fearless forecast kung baga..

you're right dude. mas maganda talaga kung magkaibang liga ang nasa finals, kahit pa maging all-english o all-spanish final parang hindi masaya (unless talagang rivals sila, like barca and real madrid)

Barça denied by Moretto magic

Tuesday, 28 March 2006

by Paul Saffer from Estádio da Luz

SL Benfica were unable to take a lead from their home UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, but will surely feel some relief after withstanding tremendous FC Barcelona pressure in this goalless affair.

Vital saves

Typical of the game was the minute just before the hour, when the visitors struck the woodwork twice. Ronaldinho, Henrik Larsson, Deco and Mark van Bommel were among those to go close, but home goalkeeper Moretto produced some fine saves, and Benfica did carve out a few chances to give themselves reason for optimism in next Wednesday's Camp Nou return.

Defensive reshuffle

Faced with the suspension of leading scorer Nuno Gomes, Benfica coach Ronald Koeman deployed Geovanni up front. The Dutchman also selected left-sided Ricardo Rocha on the right, tasked with containing Ronaldinho. Koeman's compatriot Frank Rijkaard had captain Carles Puyol banned and fellow defenders Edmílson and Rafael Márquez unfit; Juliano Belletti, Thiago Motta, Oleguer Presas and Giovanni van Bronckhorst formed the back line.

Ronaldinho denied

Larsson took injured Lionel Messi's slot in Barcelona's front three, and another of the trio, Samuel Eto'o, helped create a golden opportunity when, under pressure from the Cameroonian, Moretto picked up Anderson's fifth-minute back-pass to concede an indirect free-kick. Ronaldinho and Larsson both had efforts blocked in the ensuing goalmouth scramble.

Jinking run

Benfica are a team happiest on the counterattack, and after withstanding two corners they broke at pace, though Simão's shot curled into the arms of Víctor Valdés. Andrés Iniesta's 15th-minute jinking run then bamboozled the Benfica defence, but he slid his effort wide. At the other end, Manuel Fernandes let fly a rasping attempt, only just over.

Style

Ronaldinho turned on the style next, striding forward to supply Eto'o on the left. However, the striker's cross was turned wide by Deco, the former FC Porto man receiving the expected Lisbon 'welcome'. Moretto was fortunate before the half-hour as he sliced a clearance but recovered before Ronaldinho pounced.

Moretto save

A thrilling moment followed. From an unfamiliar right-back position Larsson fed Van Bommel. The Dutchman surged forward and eventually got one-on-one with Moretto, who kept his cool and saved with his legs. With Benfica restricted to shots from distance, Barcelona regularly confirmed their stellar reputation with gusto, lacking only a goal. Moretto somehow stopped a point-blank Eto'o effort shortly before the break, but the goalkeeper's jitters struck again when he passed the ball to Van Bommel, who fired wide from an acute angle with Larsson unattended inside.

Miccoli deployed

Koeman sent on Fabrizio Miccoli for Laurent Robert at half-time in a search of attacking potency. Manuel Fernandes had been their biggest threat in the first half, and made Valdés work early in the second. But Barcelona were not kept down for long and Ronaldinho, having taken a central berth, played a geometrically precise pass for Larsson, whose drive was tipped on to the post by Moretto. The woodwork was immediately struck a second time as the resulting Ronaldinho corner was met forcefully by the head of Motta.

Goalkeepers stand firm

There was no doubt, though, that Benfica were going forward with more conviction, and went close when Miccoli broke down the left. His angled attempt was parried by Valdés, and the brave Van Bronckhorst then blocked Giovanni's follow-up. Again Barcelona responded swiftly, breaking quickly with Van Bommel denied by a fingertip Moretto save.

Simão attempt

Buoyed perhaps by holding out for so long, Benfica pushed forward with intent in the closing stages. Simão was sent clear but denied by Valdés. Despite that promising ending, whether a draw will stand them in good stead in Spain is a moot point.

Glorious Gunners take control

Tuesday, 28 March 2006

by Andrew Haslam from Highbury

Goals in each half from Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry gave Arsenal FC a real chance of reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time as England's sole surviving representatives produced an exceptionally disciplined and hard-working display to defeat Juventus, who finished with nine men.

Clean sheet

The home team were the more enterprising throughout and expertly contained a Juve attack shorn of Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedvěd through injury and suspension respectively to record a seventh successive clean sheet in the competition, equalling AC Milan's record of last season. Arsenal always looked in control from the moment the magnificent Fabregas collected Henry's pass to secure the lead five minutes before half-time. The pair then reversed roles for the second goal midway through the second half, Henry scoring against his former club to put Arsenal firmly in control of the tie.

Cautious opening

Juventus were undone by two early strikes against Liverpool FC at the same stage of last year's tournament, and were similarly pushed on to the back foot in the opening moments by Arsenal. With the home side giving the ball away more than usual, however, the first shot on goal was carved out by the visitors, Zlatan Ibrahimović's free-kick deflecting just wide, although in the main the two teams appeared content to play their way slowly into the match.

Arsenal advance

Just past the quarter-hour the hosts picked a way through the Italian champions' rearguard for the first time, Robert Pirès finding Fabregas advancing into the area with a clever back-heel but, under pressure from Lilian Thuram, the midfielder dragged his shot wide. Gianluigi Buffon was then called into action, making a routine stop from Kolo Touré before Henry tried to catch out the Juve goalkeeper with a quick free-kick that drifted a metre wide.

Fabregas delight

That was the first of three set-piece attempts from the Arsenal captain in the opening period, and it was no surprise that, when the home side did find a way past Buffon, Henry played a crucial role. Pirès dispossessed Patrick Vieira in midfield and found his compatriot midway inside the Juventus half and Henry turned to roll a perfect pass into the path of Fabregas, who evaded Thuram to shoot low beyond Buffon. The goal brought Highbury to life and Henry might have added a second soon after but his effort from a narrow angle slid past the far post.

Touré tackle

The visitors started the second half in determined mood, and within five minutes Touré produced a vital tackle to deny Ibrahimović inside the penalty area, his second such intervention on the Juve striker. Arsenal held firm in the face of the initial pressure, however, and might have doubled their advantage just past the hour as José Antonio Reyes and Fabregas combined to find Henry in space on the right only for Buffon to palm away his left-foot attempt before the Juve goalkeeper denied both Fabregas and Pirès with his legs.

Henry delight

Buffon was powerless to prevent Arsenal extending their lead in the 69th minute, though. Arsenal were slicing through the Juve rearguard with increasing frequency and broke clear again as Fabregas ran on to Aleksandr Hleb's pass and drew the goalkeeper before unselfishly squaring for Henry to turn in.

Late dismissals

Juve's troubles were compounded as both Mauro Camoranesi and Jonathan Zebina were dismissed in the final three minutes after tackles earned them second bookings. Vieira, who will want to quickly forget his first game back at Highbury since leaving last summer, will also miss next week's return.

i'm betting on the gunners to go for the k*ll next week in delle alpi... even if both pavel nedved and alessandro del piero suit up...

Though I'm a Juventus fan, I agree that Arsenal might be able defeat them in Turin.

Damn!!! LYON was so strong, they took over the whole second half but they never made a single goal. That, by the way, is their first time in the champions league. DIDA made a good job. Pero I'm sure, Lyon will make it up on the 2nd leg.

Martins caps Inter comeback

Wednesday, 29 March 2006

by John Atkin from Giuseppe Meazza

A live-wire performance from substitute Obafemi Martins helped FC Internazionale Milano to an impressive 2-1 victory against Villarreal CF in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Shock lead

Martins came on just after the half-hour but it was after the restart that he found his feet, scoring what proved to be the decisive goal on 54 minutes. The win looked unlikely early on as Diego Forlán gave Villarreal a shock lead, although the home side responded with aplomb. Adriano equalised six minutes later but the night was to belong to fellow forward Martins.

Dream start

Forlán had given the visitors a dream start when he tapped in calmly within 60 seconds of the kick-off after Francesco Toldo could only parry José María Romero's low strike. It was Juan Román Riquelme's through-ball that had created the initial opening and Inter's Alvaro Recoba, preferred ahead of Martins, soon did similar at the other end to send Adriano clear. The Brazilian's chip left Sebastián Viera stranded but Javi Venta was on hand with a goalline clearance.

Blistering opening

Venta was a late inclusion in the starting XI as he and Juan Manuel Peña returned to provide a boost to coach Manuel Pellegrini, who was without Alessio Tacchinardi, Josico and Rodolfo Arruabarrena through suspension. But while Venta quickly made a contribution, Peña was found wanting on seven minutes when he failed to deal with Dejan Stanković's scuffed right-wing cross. The ball fell kindly for Adriano who swivelled and rifled in from close range – his 12th goal in only 15 UEFA Champions League matches.

Midfield generals

It capped a frenzied beginning to the game in front of an expectant crowd, who had also seen Juan Sebastián Verón test Viera following another defence-splitting pass from Recoba. The Uruguayan forward was a pervasive presence for the Nerazzurri but both back lines gradually found their shape, with Marcos Senna and Esteban Cambiasso key figures in a crowded midfield. Still, the lively Forlán twice forced Toldo into diving stops, while Recoba's bobbling effort earned a corner midway through the half.

Recoba injured

The Inter attacker hobbled off soon afterwards to be replaced by Martins, and the tireless running of the pacy Nigerian gave Inter options and created space in midfield. Verón was the obvious beneficiary, but captain Javier Zanetti also grew more adventurous, making a series of surges into the heart of the Villarreal defence as the visitors were placed on the back foot.

Lively presence

Martins emerged for the second half five minutes before his team-mates, and almost gained immediate reward for his conscientiousness when he just failed to reach a cross from César, deployed in place of the injured Luís Figo. Martins was set to lead the field in a mass public jog on Thursday as part of a fitness drive in Milan, but may yet find the exertion too much after an exhausting start to the second period that culminated in Inter taking a deserved advantage.

Unusual circumstances

Stanković's rasping centre found Martins free at the back post and the 21-year-old flicked the ball into the empty net. That left Villarreal in new territory, as the Spanish team had never before been behind in their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign. Venta needed to be at his best to block Martins soon after, before Riquelme almost fashioned an equaliser, his long-range free-kick striking the crossbar.

False hope

It proved a false dawn as Inter continued to press, though they were unable to add to their lead despite chances for Adriano and Martins. They could come to regret that profligacy in the return in Spain, where they have lost ten of 14 games in UEFA competition, although they beat Villarreal's local rivals Valencia CF 5-1 in their last visit a year ago.

Goalless affair at the Gerland

Wednesday, 29 March 2006

by Matthew Spiro from Stade Gerland

Olympique Lyonnais survived a torrid first half against AC Milan to keep alive their hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time. A series of fine saves from Grégory Coupet kept last season's finalists at bay, ensuring that an intruiging quarter-final first leg finished goalless - the first such result involving Lyon in the competition.

Last-eight eliminations

FC Porto and PSV Eindhoven ended Lyon's hopes at this stage in the previous two seasons, and the home fans will have feared a similar scenario as Milan dominated early on, Andriy Shevchenko denied by Coupet on three occasions. Inspired by their outstanding custodian, Lyon improved and after enjoying the better of a pulsating second period, will travel to Milan in six days with their chances intact and boosted by the return of Juninho Pernambucano.

Uncertain opening

The game had been billed as the biggest in Lyon's history and the French club, aiming for a last-four debut, began nervously. Benoît Pedretti had been drafted into midfield in place of the suspended Juninho but the Brazilian's poise and presence were sorely missed in a frantic opening. Mahamadou Diarra's misplaced pass allowed Gennaro Gattuso to slide Shevchenko clear on seven minutes, but Coupet blocked the Ukrainian's low shot with his legs. Milan's midfield diamond was posing the home side difficulties and with Serginho frequently advancing from left-back, the inexperienced François Clerc looked particularly uncomfortable.

One-way traffic

Lyon presented Milan with another opportunity when Sylvain Wiltord's poor lay-off found Kaká who surged forward before shooting narrowly wide. The one-way traffic continued and Shevchenko seemed certain to break the deadlock on 13 minutes but, after the home team had failed to clear Serginho's cross, the tournament's top scorer was again denied by Coupet's outstretched leg. Unbeaten at home in the UEFA Champions League for over three years, Lyon were a shadow of their usual selves although with Jaap Stam and Cafu absent and Paolo Maldini only fit for the bench, Lyon eventually started to threaten a Milan back line that had Alessandro Costacurta, 40 next month, operating at right-back.

Lyon lift

Florent Malouda beat Costacurta for pace on 24 minutes but overhit his cross, then moments later drew a foul from the veteran. John Carew flicked on Pedretti's resulting free-kick, forcing Dida to claw acrobatically off his line. The chance brought the stadium to life and gave Lyon renewed belief, but the Italian side maintained a strangehold on proceedings and created another glorious opening on the stroke of half-time, Shevchenko pouncing on some ponderous defending to head the ball past Cris but see his rising shot parried by the impeccable Coupet.

Home surge

Lyon, who had only failed to score in two matches this season, began the second half in positive fashion. Malouda and Wiltord were offering more support to Carew, and the hosts enjoyed their first period of sustained pressure. Malouda fired over from long range before Costacurta's slip caused panic in the Milan rearguard as Carew and then Tiago had efforts blocked. Costacurta soon made way for Maldini, while Filippo Inzaghi replaced an ineffective Alberto Gilardino.

Strong finish

There was suddenly an extra spring in the step of the Lyon players. Tiago jinked past Andrea Pirlo only to scuff his low shot, then substitute Fred struck an equally tame attempt straight at Dida. The Brazilian produced a fingertip save to keep out Tiago, but the Portuguese midfielder's night ended in disppointment as he picked up a caution that rules him out of the return.

unfortunately... tottenham has yet to make a move whether or not to buy mido from his mother club as roma... the italian side has also expressed their eagerness to reclaim mido as coach luciano spalletti is in need of a striker to anchor the giallorossi attack and mido seems to fit the billing...

there were already talks between the rome and north london sides with roma placing a €5M transfer... but the spurs are reluctant to bite the offer despite mido's performance... mido and his agent are still hoping that tottenham will have the resources to offer them a good contract...

Shevchenko to Chelsea

Written by: Francisco Barreto

Andriy ShevchenkoLONDON, Mar 30 (SW) - The Guardian is reporting that AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko and Chelsea have agreed to terms, signaling a summer move to Stamford Bridge for the Ukraine international.

Reports suggest that Shevchenko has agreed in principle to a four-year contract and is prepared to submit a transfer request to Milan.

The Italian club value Shevchenko at £35 million, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would appear to be content to match the San Siro club’s valuation, though £10 million-rated Hernán Crespo could go the other way in part exchange.

The transfer fee and Shevchenko’s wages would cost Chelsea nearly £60 million, and with the London club also expressing interest in luring Bayern Munich’s Michael Ballack and Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge, it could be another summer of unprecedented spending for the English champions.

Liverpool confirm takeover talks

Written by: Francisco Barreto

Liverpool FCLIVERPOOL, Mar 29 (SW) - The governing board of European Cup holders Liverpool have confirmed that it is in negotiation with “a number of parties” interested in taking control of the club.

Spanish multi-millionaire Juan Villalonga was linked with the club earlier in the week, promising to transform Liverpool “from a domestically focused club into a global force". But a statement released by the Liverpool board has confirmed that the Spaniard’s offer is not the only one being considered by the Anfield authorities.

The statement read: "The board of Liverpool FC has noted the recent press speculation concerning possible third-party investment into the club and can confirm that it is continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds into the club.

"Although the structure of any such investment is uncertain, it may include an offer for the entire share capital of the club. Shareholders will be kept updated as appropriate."

The club has been the subject of repeated interest from investors in recent years, with Liverpool drawing bids from Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and local businessman Steve Morgan. In November 2005, there were also rumors linking the U.S.-based Kraft family with a potential bid.

Wenger: “We will finish the job in Juventus”

Written by: Francisco Barreto

Arsenal's Thierry HenryLONDON, Mar 29 (SW) - Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, fresh off the stunning 2-0 win against Juventus at Highbury, is confident his young side can progess pass Juventus.

Wenger said: "My only regret was that I felt there was one more goal in this game for us.

"I believe we will finish the job in Juventus but there's still a lot to come.

"We have to keep our feet on the ground and continue to play the game we want to play, keep our football as simple as we can and play in a positive mood.

"That's what the boys do and they can do better. They are not inhibited. There is quality in this team and they are good to watch.

"For a long time we needed to adjust to the Premiership to find confidence. The win against Real Madrid may have helped us."

The second leg is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 5, at the Stadio della Alpi in Turin.
