rooney10
Meron bang away-goal system ang Suzuki Cup? I heard the commentators say that there is no "away goals rule" for the Suzuki Cup. Although the boys look really tired, I'm really hopeful they'll snag a goal or 2. Penalties can go either way. Quote Link to comment
Musikero31
i hope there are no away goals rule. delikado tayo kapag ganun. sana manalo tayo mamaya. sayang lang kasi hindi ko mapapanood. hayy... Quote Link to comment
_eRon_
Yup! Indeed! Kids here in the Middle East play football barefeet! So pwede rin sa atin yan, Pinoys should realize that there are more sports than basketball! Football is way more popular and they pay better than basketball! Thats in Europe and ME ofcourse! RER
Azkals to compete in AFC Challenge Cup in 2011 MANILA, Philippines -- A hectic year 2011 awaits the Philippine football team, which is seeing action in several international tournaments next year. Fresh from their historic achievement in the AFF Suzuki Cup, the Filipino booters, together with newly-recognized Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, graced the PSA Forum on Tuesday at Shakey’s U.N. Avenue, and reflected on their recent campaign. The Philippines usually finishes at the tail end of regional competitions, but in the just-concluded Suzuki Cup, the Azkals reached the semifinals. They lost the 2 semis games to Indonesia, both 0-1. “It was a culmination of a very nice run for us,” said team manager Dan Palami. “We never expected us to be there in the semifinals, and the credit has to be given to the players for playing their hearts out. Our campaign was a reflection of the Filipino spirit of never backing down." Palami, who has bankrolled the squad since late last year, said the team is now looking forward to several international tournaments next year, starting with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying tournament. Araneta also announced at the same forum, supported by Outlast Battery, PAGCOR and Shakey’s, that he finally got the recognition of the FIFA early Tuesday morning, certifying his election as president during the PFF Congress last month. Araneta assured transparency as he serves out the remainder of the term of Jose Mari Martinez, who was ousted during the same PFF Congress. He also vowed to continue supporting the team. “He [Martinez] has the right to appeal, but as far as we’re concerned, it’s already a closed matter,” said Araneta. “FIFA has accepted our legality and it has accepted our congress.” “I am glad sponsors are coming in,” he added. “We can assure you of transparency with our governance and that the money will be spent where it’s supposed to be spent.” Araneta also promised to revive youth competitions as well as the national open tournament to discover new talents. The Philippine booters salvaged a dramatic draw with Singapore, 1-1, on an injury-time equalizer by Chris Greatwich. the Philippines also scored in the 2-0 victory over Vietnam, which was considered as the upset of the tournament. The results catapulted the Azkals to stardom. Skipper Aly Borromeo said they never imagined this would happen to them in a country where basketball and boxing are the popular sports. “We don’t want to make all of this for nothing. The country has a lot of potential to be very good in football,” said Borromeo. The Azkals will face Mongolia in a home-and-away AFC Challenge Cup qualifying tie in February, with the home game expected to be played at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod. If they beat Mongolia, the RP booters will move on to the qualifying event in a group which includes Myanmar, Palestine and Bangladesh. Araneta said they have already expressed their intention of having the two games against Mongolia in the Philippines to avoid playing in near-freezing conditions. Palami said they will hold open tryouts to get the best available talent for the next tournaments. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a local or a Fil-foreigner,” said Palami. “There will be an equal chance for everyone to compete for slots in the squad.” Quote Link to comment
RER
Quote Link to comment
blow_gobi
I heard that the one local company that supports basketball is also willing to support football. Actually, talented Filipino players can make more money in football than in basketball because they can potentially be recruited by Asian and other foreign clubs and there are so many football clubs (maybe more than basketball teams) in the world that they can potentially play. In basketball, Filipinos (including Fil-Ams) have virtually no chance of playing elsewhere except the Philippines and perhaps some ASEAN clubs. In fact, PH coach McMenemy said there are many Fil-foreigners playing in European clubs presently, the major problem in getting them to play for the Philippine team is money, as these players are being paid well by their respective clubs. By the way, it was reported by the media that Phil Younghusband, Greatwich, and 2 others including a pure-bred pinoy (Araneta? I'm not sure) have been approached by some Indonesian clubs for possible playing contracts. I think McMenemy has offers, too, from 3 Asian clubs, including one from the Middle East. Edited December 23, 2010 by RER Quote Link to comment
tequila5
Challenge Cup next year. Sabi, Mongolia's weather is quite a 'challenge' kaya baka ang games daw, dito sa atin ganapin. Honestly, I dont know much about football, need to read more about this. Quote Link to comment
_eRon_
maganda yan kung makuha ang mga azkals to play sa commercial leagues, getting regular games against quality competition can only help to improve their game.. i think for the sea games, mas batang team ang kekelanganin kasi under 21 (or under 23, nga ba?) ang pwdeng lumaro.. dapat may youth and senior team ang pinas para sure na may continuity ang program, it all boils down to funding pa din kasi the team needs quality coaches, trainers, equipment, and physios to make sure na na-ttrain ng maganda mga players natin, i hope bigyan ng sufficient funding ang program or better yet makakuha sila ng private sponsor para mas madami available na funds Quote Link to comment

uaeboy25
Congrats nga pala sa Azkals Azkals? win 10th top soccer story of Sports Illustrated MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals’ quarterfinal victory over Vietnam in the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup made it to Sports Illustrated’s Top 10 soccer stories this year. The Azkals' 2-0 win over Vietnam early this month is ranked No. 10 on the list compiled by Sports Illustrated columnist Georgina Turner. “This year's tournament produced arguably the biggest upset in its history: Defending champion and federation powerhouse Vietnam lost 2-0 to the Philippines, ranked 151st in the world and without so much as a point off Vietnam in nearly 20 years,” Turner said in her column “Inside Soccer”. The Azkals defeated Vietnam in front of 40,000 Vietnamese spectators at the My Dinh National Stadium on December 5. Chris Greatwich scored the opening goal for the Azkals in the 38th minute. This was followed by Phil Younghusband’s precision strike at close range with 10 minutes remaining. The victory made the Azkals instant celebrities in basketball-crazy Philippines. It also sent Vietnam’s Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto fuming mad over the Philippines’ defensive style of play. "If the Philippines think they can win playing that way then my dear, poor, poor football in this region," he said in an interview published on the tournament's official website. The Philippines went on to score a draw against Myanmar and seize a semifinals slot. The Azkals, however, failed to advance into the Suzuki Cup finals after bowing to Indonesia in two semifinal games. Quote Link to comment
_eRon_
dapat may local league tayo para tuloy ang improvement natin pero maganda din na ang mga local or international based pinoy players ay makapaglaro sa ibang leagues dahil matutulungan silang ma-raise ang game nila by playing with the best possible competition.. kung may local league, they should pursue recruiting not only pinoy players, pati dapat foreign players makapaglaro para iimprove ang players natin skill wise.. get the best coaches & staff para maganda din ang skills training, nutrition and conditioning.. maganda ang boxing day games sa EPL: chelsea at arsenal & manutd at sunderland..go red devils! i hope we finish the year still top of the league Quote Link to comment
_eRon_
manutd win 2-0 against sunderland, berbatov with a brace, 5pts na lamang sa 2nd place arsenal..arsenal vs chelsea tomorrow Quote Link to comment

RER
edi wala tayong na produce na mga bagong talents at wala din magiging substantial financial backing. hanggat wala tayong sariliing liga walang future ang philippine footballYounghusband and Greatwich is not a product of Local League.
marketing, logistics, and ROI are the things that hamper us from having a proper football league. at s'yempre, politics! although p'wede naman tayong kumuha ng pages mula sa ibang countries. say kung prob ang logistics, why not have luzon and vis-min divisions. tapos cities will just do a little retrofitting of their track or stadium and field in teams that are composed of local schoolboys and if they can afford them, big university/college players or, ehem, imports (dami ex-pats dito). para lang maumpisan, 8 to 12 teams per division until eventually mag-grow and be something of the tiered system tulad sa ibang bansa. for sure, magiging hotly contested ang mga laban sa visayas. bacolod vs. iloilo? cebu vs. dumaguete? eh paano kaya sa luzon kung saan magakakalapit ang cities? manila vs. quezon city? haha, wishful thinking... RER
Younghusband and greatwich donated a football clinic. Good sample of patriotism. _eRon_
badtrip draw lang manutd with birmingham..berbatov is scoring at will..manutd still top of the league with 2 games to play, go red devils!!! Quote Link to comment
RER
So what do you want to happen then. hope that 100 thousand pinays get knocked up by foreigners with roots from a footballing nation and then end up living there and becomes a footballer? Name me a successful football nation that has no local league. Edited January 9, 2011 by RER Quote Link to comment
