Manchester United sign nine-year-old

LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Manchester United have signed a gifted nine-year-old after his grandfather sent the Premier League champions a DVD showcasing the boy's talents which has become a YouTube sensation.

Rhain Davis, who was born in England but has lived in Australia since the age of four, was hailed by the British press on Thursday as the next Wayne Rooney after the United striker.

The boy's dribbling and goalscoring prowess for an Under-10 side in Brisbane, Australia, feature in a four-minute YouTube clip, already viewed more than 800,000 times.

United confirmed the signing but played down the hype around Davis, who has moved back to Cheshire in northern England with his father, near the club's training ground.

"He's a member of our academy and we don't comment on individual members," a United spokesman told Reuters.

He added that the club sign about 40 players of Davis's age every year and, as is standard, will decide annually whether to renew his contract or release him.

What was so unusual in Davis's case was that his skills were brought to the attention of United's youth scouts by the DVD submission, which could inspire other hopefuls, the spokesman said.

"We're bracing ourselves for a whole series of DVDs," he added.

Davis has been thrilled at the chance to rub shoulders with some of his idols.

"The best part has been meeting lots of players like Wayne Rooney," he told British newspapers.

right now i am quite disappointed with jose calderon and the los merengues upper management. calderon promised arjen robben during his election and he wouldnt pay an additional 6M euros for the guy. RM's offer is 30M euros, chelsea want 36M.. it's only a 6M euro difference, cmon sign him up.. after losing out on jose antonio reyes to city rivals atletico, it is imperative the team sign up robben.. they paid 30M for pepe without hesitation, how can they not pay 36M for robben!!!

right now the team still needs a left winger, a left back and a talisman at the middle of the field to orchestrate things .. i hope they snatch heinze from man utd as ferguson has stated he will let go of heinze (except for premiership rivals chelsea, arsenal and liverpool).. *by this time i sound like a broken record on what the team's needs are..

after failing to land prime targets kaka and fabregas, im hoping they make a strong push for 20 yr old samir nasri of olympique marseille.. the man they call "the new zinedine zidane" and "the new pearl of european football".. they can get rid of emerson, cassano and salgado to acquire funds, but surely a club this big don't need to sell players to gain funds for transfer..

go galacticos!!! :boo:

ac milan announced that they signed up the "duck" alexander pato, from internacional.

saw him play against barca during the fifa club world championships where barca lost 1-0. he wasn't that impressive but he sure made it harder for puyol and marquez each time internacional counter-attacks.

with an ageing line-up, especially its forward line, i think pato would benefit learning from inzaghi, who is a an excellent poacher in front of the goal. :)

where does robinho play? what about guti? heinze would a good replacement for roberto carlos. am no longer a fan of real madrid after they picked beckham. so am no longer familiar with their line-up. what they really need is someone who can endear the team to its fans again the way raul does. raul is on the wane and still the undisputed gem in real madrid's crown.

kaka would have done that alongside raul....

wow. that is a coup right now. this is good news for my italian team. milan still has ronaldo, kaka, inzaghi and gilardino, i think the 18 yr old will find it difficult to break into the first team..

we are on different sides then, i was (actually still am) a man utd fan and became an RM fan after the beckham signing. i must admit that becks doesnt have all the talent, flair, speed all the other superstars have but you cannot question his work rate on the field..

for me, raul is already past his prime.. it is only out of gratitude that he is still in the first XI eventhough his form is clearly on the downside.. the last world cup would attest to that as he was relegated to the bench.. unless he regains his form soon, i think he shouldnt make the first XI.. javier saviola and jerzey dudek were good additions, everyone should fight for their place.. nobody should have an automatic place so that everyone should work hard during training..

guti is good but i dont think he has the charisma of a zinedine zidane.. someone who could influence the other stars to play on the same level as he did.. that should've been kaka's (or fabregas') role with madrid.. certainly gonzalo higuain and fernando gago hasnt displayed the form to which they were signed up for last season..

i dont know what formation schuster preferred at getafe though.. that we have to wait and see.. i havent seen any RM preseason match yet..

right, i admire beckham's work rate. that cant be said from most galacticos. what i dont admire is his penchant for his excessive limelight ... he was even dunked inside the dryer by his former man u captains, steve bruce and bryan robson for showing off in the neighborhood ( you may want to read that) and steve bruce swears its true and its already part of man u folklore.

i already said the raul is on the decline. but he is still the captain and thus the image of real madrid, unless things changed.

btw, am also a man u fan and barca. :)

Real offer 40 million euros for Ballack and Robben - reportsMADRID, Aug 4, 2007 (AFP) - Real Madrid have offered Chelsea around 40 million euros for German midfielder Michael Ballack and Dutch winger Arjen Robben, Spanish media reported on Saturday. The transfer could be settled in the "coming days", sporting dailies AS and Marca and Cadena Ser radio said. Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has been on the record as saying that the Spanish giants needed the likes of Robben and Ballack. Robben, 23, has two years left on his contract with Chelsea and has been in long drawn-out negotiations with the London club over a contract extension until 2012 but has not always been in favour with the club's Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho. German captain Ballack has not played since he was injured playing for Chelsea in their Premiership match against Newcastle in April and had an operation to remove a loose bone from his ankle shortly after. The 30-year-old missed his club's Champions League semi-final with Liverpool, the FA Cup final win over Manchester United and this month's Euro 2008 qualifiers.
