Cook Pu was a student in Ted's architecture class.

When Ted reads the name on the signup sheet, he believes it is a fake name, like "Seymour Butts", and mockingly repeats the name. Cook responds very quietly, "here." Later, Ted finds out that Cook is dropping out of his class.

 

When Marshall, Lily and Robin learn of this, to make Ted feel even more guilty, they make fun of the name. When Cook's name is later announced at MacLaren's for an order, Ted thinks that the gang have set that up as a joke and are making more fun of the name, but it turns out that Cook is present at the bar too.
