Sir Galahad®
Danny Seigle picked up his game in third quarter to lead the outright-semis-seeking San Miguel Beermen to their sixth consecutive victory, a 114-102 romp over the Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum. SMB’s leading scorer and second-best overall in the conference was at his deadliest in the third quarter, going 6-for-7 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line for 16 points in the period as the Beermen outscored the Phone Pals, 42-22, to turn around the complexion of the game. Seigle was practically in his comfort zone in that killer stretch that neither among Harvey Carey, Don Allado and Anthony Washington – TNT’s best frontline defenders – weren’t good enough to stop the SMB wingman. “He’s such a terrific offensive player. What can I say?” said SMB coach Chot Reyes, who recorded his longest winning streak since leading the Coca-Cola Tigers to an all-time franchise-best seven game streak spanning the elims and semis of the 2003 All-Pinoy Cup. “Coming into the season, our main objective really was really to keep Danny (Seigle) in his best shape as a PBA player.” Seigle, who was the Best Player of the Conference in last season’s Philippine Cup, eventually finished the game with 26 points on a 10-of-22 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the line. He also had six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in 36 minutes of action. But he also got a lot of help from Danny Ildefonso, who finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and shotblock, Dondon Hontiveros, who scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, and Lordy Tugade who added 14 points. It was feel-good victory for the Beermen, who avenged their 84-90 loss to the Phone Pals in their first meeting last Nov. 19 when Seigle was resting an injured eye. But more significantly, their 12th win overall in 17 games earned them at least a playoff for one of two outright semifinal berths up for grabs. “We knew they (TNT) will be highly-energized coming into the game because they are fresh from an eight-day break. And true enough they jumped the gun on us. But as I have told the players if we keep up with them we could win this game,” Reyes said. The loss was the eighth in 17 games for the Phone Pals, who will now have their sights on an outright quarterfinal spot instead after bowing out of the race for one of the Top 2 slots. With Jimmy Alapag scoring eight points and Allado adding seven, the Phone Pals dominated the first quarter that had them leading by as much as 28-12. They were still up, 48-40, with two minutes left in the second quarter when the Beermen closed out the period with an 8-2 run to pull even at 50-all at halftime. Olsen Racela had six points in that run. SMB then seized control by scoring the first eight points of the third quarter with Seigle, Ildefonso and Tugade conspiring and never trailed again. Allado scored 21 points to show the way for the Phone Pals while Asi Taulava scored all 18 of his points in the second half. But Jimmy Alapag, went scoreless in the second half after pouring 15 points in the opening half. (DBC) The scores: San Miguel Beer 114 – Seigle 26, Ildefonso 18, Hontiveros 15, Tugade 14, Racela 11, Pena 9, Adducul 7, Tenorio 5, Espinas 4, Wilson 4, Gonzales 1. Talk ‘N Text 102 – Allado 21, Taulava 18, Alapag 14, Ritualo 14, Carey 12, Washington 8, Belano 8, Cardona 7, Fran 0, Noble 0. Quarterscores: 18-26, 50-50, 92-72, 114-102. Quote Link to comment

gilgrissom
I like the rotation of SMB right now. There are quality players subsituting for every position. The players coming off the bench are surely contributing. Well, if you have Ildefonso coming off the bench, then that's abig plus. Probably that's his role now and it seems he's getting comfortable with it. With a lot of injuries coming his way the last 2 years, he's more refreshed coming off the bench -- less minutes but more contribution. Quote Link to comment
