"Pingris heading back to the giants"

Another blockbuster trade is in the works and could possibly be announced before the weekend with rebound demon Marc Pingris heading back to the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.

Pingris, who was awarded the 2006 Philippine Cup Finals MVP while playing for Purefoods, will reportedly be sent back to the Giants in exchange for Niño “KG” Canaleta, with Barako Bull serving as a conduit team to complete the deal.

Rumors about Pingris returning to the Purefoods fold has recently been making the rounds on the internet and local papers with Giants coach Ryan Gregorio even admitting that he wants his former player back. Pingris was traded for Enrico Villanueva in the mid-season of last year when it was announced that Rommel Adducul had cancer, leaving the Giants without a legitimate center.

It is interesting to an average fan why San Miguel Beer would trade Pingris when they are currently leading the league and undefeated in 6 games. However, it should also be noted that Pingris missed the team’s first five games, only rejoining the team against Ginebra. He had a rebound, a block, and 4 fouls in six minutes in his last game as a Beerman.

League sources say the trade will push through with San Miguel sending Pingris to Barako Bull, and then Barako Bull sending Pingris to Purefoods for Canaleta and a future first round draft pick. Canaleta will be sent to San Miguel, leaving the rebuilding Photokina franchise with Purefoods’ 2011 or 2012 draft rights.

For the SMB, letting Pingris go for Canaleta will unclog an overload in big men, especially with a returning Danny Ildefonso expected to join the already formidable frontline of Dorian Peña, Jay Washington, Mick Pennisi and Samigue Eman. The high-flying forward, who didn’t quite make a fit with Purefoods in his short stint with the team, will help fill the void in the smallforward position left by injured stars Danny Seigle and Lordy Tugade.

On the other hand, the Giants will be getting a much-needed boost with Pingris back in the fold. They are expected to improve above 0.500 with a much better balanced lineup. Purefoods is currently in the middle of the standings with a 3-3 win-loss record.

Observers can now speculate that San Miguel might be on the trail of Kelly Williams who has an expiring contract with Sta. Lucia. The Realtors are keen on retaining the services of Williams, but it has been widely perceived that the 2008 MVP wants to play for the company for which played for in his PBL days. San Miguel might be piling up on star players to acquire the reigning MVP in what could be a sign-and-trade deal for the Realtors (in the offseason).

13 players from SMB will have expiring contracts by the end of the season.

Expect a lot of negotiations in the off-season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) starting July as 74 players' contracts expire by the end of the season.

Defending Fiesta Cup champion Barangay Ginebra has the most number of expiring players with 15, including the dynamic duo of Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand, as well as former Most Valuable Player (MVP) Eric Menk.

Their contracts with the Kings will end July 15, same with Sunday Salvacion, Rafi Reavis, Junthy Valenzuela, Paul Artadi, Chris Pacana, Willie Wilson, Junjun Cabatu, Macky Escalona and JR Aquino.

PBA rule states the 10 ball clubs can negotiate and renew their respective players, but teams wishing to acquire players with expiring contract from other teams can only start talking as soon as the contract expires.

Caguioa, who helped Ginebra win the reinforced-conference title last season, has missed the previous Philippine Cup due to injuries to both knees. He is currently recuperating in the US but is expected to return this month.

Ginebra's sister-team San Miguel Beer has the second most number with 13, including Olsen Racela, Dondon Hontiveros and Danny Seigle.

Also with expiring contracts are Marc Pingris, Jay Washington, Dorian Pena, Lordy Tugade, Mike Cortez, Jonas Villanueva, Samigue Eman, Chris Calaguio, Wesley Gonzales and Froilan Baguion.

The Beermen are currently leading the pack in the season-ending Fiesta Cup with a clean 6-0, win-loss record.

Purefoods TJ Hotdogs and Sta. Lucia Realty each have eight players with expiring contracts.

For the Giants: Rich Alvarez, Al Vergara (July 15), Richard Yee, PJ Simon, Roger Yap, Romel Adducul, Rico Villanueva (July 31) and Topex Robinson (August 31), while the Realtors will have to deal with Bitoy Omolon (June 30), Joseph Yeo (July 31), reigning MVP Kelly Williams, Norman Gonzales, Christian Coronel, Philip Butel, Melvin Mamaclay and Dennis Daa (Aug. 31).

Alaska, Rain or Shine, Cola-Cola and Barako Bull have six each.
