jayar
Hi! Someone I met a few months ago mentioned that he was able to get an OEM memory card for his ibook for a much cheaper price than those selling in Apple stores (Powermac, etc.). But I forgot where he got them. He was able to get a Kingston-branded one. Are these available here? Where can you get them? In general, where can you get OEM parts that are cheaper locally? Thanks. You mean RAM right? I'm not sure if Ibook and Macbooks are the same, but I was able to get 2GB (1GB each) of RAM in VMall for my MB(thanks for Mr. Boomuse's tip). Halos pare pareho prices ng mga stores dun, around 1100 or 1200 if I remember correctly per 1GB. It might be cheaper now. 667 DDR2 SDRAM. Question naman for Mr. Boom, are there MB batteries available here in Manila na cheap? And is there a way for me to extend my batteries further than 2 years?? I've been doing the fully discharge then recharge cycle every 3 months (i know dapat every month pero i keep forgetting to do it). Thanks! Quote Link to comment

On RAM: For as long as you know the form factor (Sodimms for laptops), type and speed, you can buy RAM for your Mac locally. Go to www.crucial.com to check out their memory configurator for specific Mac models. On MB Batteries: The cheapest way to get replacement Macbook batteries is mail order. There is a place in Eastwood and Virra Mall that opens up your battery pack and replaces the lithium cells with news ones and that alternative is cheaper. I remember giving them charging P2k for a thinkpad battery pack repair that would have cost double that at the time. I also remember them not being able to find the right cells for my Powerbook then. But they just might have it. I will look for the details of this place and post it here. Doing a full discharge and charge doesn't not increase the battery life of your battery, it just helps make sure that it is able to retain a maximum amount of charge. Rechargeable battery life is measured in terms of cycles. A cycle is the number of times it is ran down to its minimum allowable depth of discharge (DOD) and then charged up to 100%. Remember that lithium cells are very obedient. If you want to discharge it to zero it will allow you to and die. Which is why the computer keeps track of this and shuts down before any damage is done to the battery. My experience is that my laptops where I do a lot of opportunity charging (plugging in whenever there is a power point available) last the longest compared to one that is regularly discharged and recharged. And believe me, I go through laptops like some people go through pairs of shoes. Quote Link to comment

Cycles according to ISTAT are 364. Time to replace? Or is this just a glitch (I hope)? Quote Link to comment

boomouse
I meant for the memory. Thanks. Sus, any shop in Virra that sells memory sell memory for the Mac. You just have to know what type to ask for. As in chip density, bus speed, buffered or unbuffered. Old Macbook pros uses 667 MHz, DDR2 for example. You can log into MTC, you can google it too. boomouse
Judge Dismisses Pystar Antitrust Claims Against Apple by Jeff Gamet, 8:40 AM EST, November 19th, 2008http://www.macobserver.com/article/2008/11/19.2.shtml The unauthorized Mac cloner Pystar watched its case against Apple crumble to the ground on Tuesday when the court dismissed its counterclaims that the Cupertino company violated antitrust laws by prohibiting other companies from selling Mac-compatible hardware. The ruling means Pystar may now have to face up to Apple's suit that alleges it is violating Apple-owned trademarks and copyrights. U.S. District Judge William Alsup gave Pystar 20 days to amend its claim and added "Any such motion should be accompanied by a proposed pleading and the motion should explain why the foregoing problems are overcome by the proposed pleading. Plaintiff must plead its best case. Failing such a motion, all inadequately pled claims will be dismissed without further leave to amend." Considering, however, that Judge Alsup called all of Pystar's arguments "unenlightening," it isn't likely that the company will be able to present a compelling case to the court within the next 20 days. If not, Pystar may find itself in a very weak position against Apple's claims. Speaking anonymously, one attorney familiar with this type of case commented that for Pystar it's "game over. It's that simple. Psystar is now without either defenses or claims. Its only options are to appeal or settle with Apple on Apple's terms." Pystar landed in this sticky legal bind after it began making and selling Macintosh-compatible clone computers earlier this year without permission from Apple. The real Mac maker hasn't offered a clone licensing program ever since CEO Steve Jobs returned to the company in 1996, and it doesn't seem likely that it will reverse that stance any time soon. ============== Report: Intel to Release Quad-Core Processors for All-in-Ones (iMacs) by Bryan Chaffin, 5:50 PM EST, November 19th, 2008http://www.macobserver.com/article/2008/11/19.8.shtml Intel is set to announce a Core 2 quad-core processor that is optimized for all-in-one PCs, for instance the iMac, according to Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes. The newspaper reported that Apple, along with Acer, Hewlett-Packard and Dell, have all committed to building computers with the processors, suggesting that iMacs will soon be quad-core equipped. According to DigiTimes, the new processor family will come in the following versions: Core 2 Quad Q8200s (2.33GHz/4MB L2), Core 2 Quad Q9400s (2.66GHz/6MB L2), and Core 2 Quad Q9550s (2.83GHz/12MB L2). They will be priced at US$245, $320 and $369 respectively in thousand-unit quantities. The optimizations in these processors will drop their power usage to 65 watts, down from 95W. That reduction in power consumption not only makes the processors more efficient, it will also reduce the amount of waste heat they produce, which is key to Apple in being able to offer the slim designs the company has focused on for the modern iMac product line. DigiTimes is often a source of leaked information in the tech world, most of it coming from Taiwanese manufacturers. Unfortunately, the newspaper doesn't always get it right, so take this news with a grain of salt. The processors will reportedly be available in mid-January, which means that if Apple is going to adopt them for its iMac product line, the company could announce something as soon as Macworld Conference & Expo.
