Chito
Technically speaking, UP still doesn't charge "full tuition" dahil malaki pa rin ang subsidy. The Fund for Assistance to Private Education has long been arguing that if UP really charged full tuition, i.e., if it adopted the practice of private schools of relying mainly on tuition and other fees to fund its operations (including its many research institutes), its fees would be higher than Ateneo's or La Salle's because UP actually has a higher cost per student than these two schools.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly. So one could just imagine how much angry we taxpayers should all feel if we see UP students loafing around instead of getting educated. Quote Link to comment

Mr. Brown
Studied in UP at Php 400.00 per sem. On my third year, there was a 100% increase. The studentry opposed this but we were not able to do anything about it. We ended up paying Php 800.00 per sem with the words "UNDER PROTEST" stamped on our Form 5. Quote Link to comment

arkitekto
Out of topic siya pero totoo na ang default bracket in stfap is 9, full tuition iyon. And there are many who apply for a lower bracket na nandadaya. Student populace, parang karamihan na middle class up na at iilan na lang iyong talagang mahirap.Tapos, noong bago ako grumadweyt, dumami pa ang mga international students na lalong nagpalala ng situwasyon. Dami tuloy nagkalat na koreano, kasi nga ang mura ng tuition natin compared sa country nila tapos special treatment pa dito.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Foreigners have to pay a "education fund fee" na twice yata ng tuition sa UP on top of regular tuition... anyone without a Philippine citizenship kahit dito na pinanganak... I suppose foreign students help make UP more "internationally progressive" especially going towards research output as a strategy. Tutal wala namang magawa ang UP admin sa idle lands na squattered na kasi, bawal galawin. There's also the fact that UP maintains many programs most especially graduate and post-graduate, that other schools avoid because hindi popular but necessary, like social work, women studies, etc. Also, included sa UP budget ang operation ng PGH. Even now that UP is scaling down its Med program, it still has to keep PGH in full operation. Quote Link to comment

arkitekto
-->I think the reason why they (foreign students) pay more is also because the taxpayers' subsidy is removed from their matriculation. I agree. Usually they also engage the services of english instructors while here, and they go to Palawan, Boracay and tourist spots too while at it. Good for our economy. The admission system for UP follows "affirmative action" in the sense that they proprotion admissions based on region from what I know. Expectedly, Metro Manila and affluent regions score higher on average sa UPCAT, but someone outside Metro manila can get in easier than in Metro manila, because their regional UPCAT average is lower. Anyway, being an isko whether from any state U, esp PUP and UP means an added obligation to repay society... by being productive and concerned for our country. Quote Link to comment
