hello peeps, docs...

i got high triglycerides (175 previously and now 145... 140 ang upper limit) and uric acid (7.5, 7.0 upper limit). aside from that, i experience pain in my knees and muscles (most prominent sa thighs).

i experience muscle pains especially during night. nanghihina yung thigh muscles ko. there are times i cannot even stand up from sitting. mas lalo mahina ang muscle ko kapag nag-exercise ako the day before. alam nyo yung feeling na muscle sore kapag matagal hindi nag-exercise? instead of muscle sore ang nararamdaman ko, weak muscles. nung nagbasketball ako, two days after, madaling-araw, ni hindi ko ma-lift ang legs at arms ko para makapag-iba ng pwesto ng higa.

yung knees naman, kapag nag-exercise ako like biking or jogging, mga 20-50 meters, sumasakit na yung harap ng knees ko. lalo na kapag extending yung motion ng legs ko.

i went to the doctor about 2 months ago. my doctor prescribed me with LIPIGEM for 2 months. it succeeded in partially lowering my triglycerides but still not in the recommended range. i think baka nalilito na yung doctor ko kung ano ang gagamutin. kasi kung anou-ano ang mataas sa blood ko. :D

thanks in advance. :) ;)

hey pepeng manas. bago ang lahat, some questions: how old are you? what is your daily activity level? do you have regular exercise? is there any pain at all in the muscles? or just weakness.

important lahat ang information na ito. there are many causes of muscle weakness - one is a problem with the muscle itself eg muscle strain, etc. another is a nerve problem and another reason is an electrolyte problem. Make sure that you have checked your electrolytes... notably K, Ca and Mg.

the pain you feel in front of your knees as you jog is probably tendinitis.

Dr. Tan is a good rheumatologist and he will be able to manage your knee pain. Regarding your muscle weakness, be ready to describe to him how often you have the symptoms and what are the inciting events so he can determine if it's a problem in the nerves or in the electrolytes.

Since mataas ang uric acid mo, avoid peanuts, beans, tawilis, anchovies, mackerel, mussels and innards. Also for joint pains/arthritis (especially if you have osteophytes) it is best to keep to your ideal body weight, you can compute for this by multiplying 18.6 - 23.9 by your height squared.

so far ang alam kong nagagawa ng glucosamine is it prevents further joint damage... and best results are not with oral glucosamine but with glucosamine injected in your joint. Dr. Tan will know more about this.

hope this helps

im 30 yrs old. i used to go to the gym until april of this year. recently, im not physically active. there is pain in muscle aside from weakness. :)

will do. sa blood test din ba nalalaman Potassium, Calcium, at Magnesium? ano ba preparation before i-test to? bawal ba kumain before, or something.

actually, nalimutan kong sabihin before, nangayayat nga ako eh. dati, kapag hindi ako nag-e-exercise, tumataba ako. pero recently, pumayat ako nung tumigil ako instead na tumaba ulit. :)

I agree that you definitely need a consult with a musculoskeletal specialist like a rheumatologist, orthopaedist or physiatrist (rehab). The differential diagnoses for your condition could range from an electrolyte imbalance to spinal stenosis to an inflammatory arthritis and one of the aforementioned doctors may be able to help differentiate which is which from a history and physical examination and a few laboratory tests.

As for the "glucosamine injections" - it's actually hyaluronic acid injections that are done. The cheapest cost around P16500.00 for 3 once a week injections (all three injections for that price), without the doctor's professional fee. There are certain indications for it and, again, one of the aforementioned specialists will be able to give you a better picture about it and tell you if you are qualified to have the injections. The injections may be cheaper south of the Pasig. :

As for oral glucosamine, the only level 1 evidence established for the drug is for glucosamine sulfate given at 1500mg daily (marketed under the brand name Viatril-S). All other preparations (example: Glucosamine HCl) have no studies backing up their efficacy.

di ba yung POWERJOINT na ina-ad sa TV glucosamine sulfate daw yun? it's backed up by Dr. Perry Tan dun sa tv. yoko sana maniwala sa mga ad sa TV na tipong home shopping network, pero na-curious ako dito sa pino-promote ni Doc Tan.

thank you very much, hint-of-lime. very much appreciated. :)

If I understand your question correctly, it appears that you are talking about the withdrawal + calendar method as a form of contraception. In that case, the correct answer is, 'that depends.'

That depends on whether the woman's cycle is regular, and if it is, how long does it run. If you would care to provide this info, then we can probably chart some safe days.

That being said, I must, in good conscience, mention that withdrawal as a form of contraception is downright lousy. It just doesn't provide the peace of mind as other forms of contraception. Even if the man hasn't ejaculated at the point of orgasm, it is still possible for him to fertilize a woman's egg. If you'd like to know more, then feel free to ask.

Bro, ganito na lang - BFAD approved VIARTRIL-S (glucosamine sulfate) as a therapeutic agent. All other glucosamine formulations were required to indicate on their label that they have "No approved therapeutic value". I have no ties at all with the company that markets viartril, so I have no vested interest in it. The studies that shows the most promise were those done with Viartril. If we are to believe that all companies produce generic drugs acccording to the same formulation, I leave it up to you if you wish to take powerjoint as an alternative - just remember that the best patient outcomes according tot the studies were if the patient took 1500mg daily. :goatee:

Blackwind, how are the morbidity rates for lap hernioraphy? I'm not sure if I misheard that morbidity rates are higher compared to traditional repair. Or I might have confused it with poor outcomes for lap appendectomy. Thanks bro!

how can i treat my abdominal pain?i dont think if its becoz of gas or the food i ate before.. it really hurts.

please help.tnx.

If it hurts so much, I think you should have it seen by a doctor. Abdominal pain can be a symptom of any number of problems ranging from ailments that can be treated medically and ailments like appendicitis that have to be treated with emergency surgery. A doctor will know which is which based on a proper history and physical examination.
