  1. are you a doctor by any chance?

byanmaximo, lahat ng mga sumasagot sa post mo ay mga doctor. doctor din ako pero hindi pang OB ang linya ko. but i can see that you are really bothered by your 'problem'. nothing beats a face-to-face consultation with your doctor. i know it can be intimidating, pero lahat ng tanong mo sigurado akong masasagot at maliliwanagan ka. mahirap kasi mag-explain sa message boards. try the pregnancy tests or kung gusto mo mas sigurado, punta ka sa hosp or laboratory para magpa-test ang partner mo. para ma-reassure ka nang husto, kailangan mo gawin ang preg test, ang mouth sores, abdominal pains etc are just manifestations of some changes that are happening to any woman who's either menstruating or carrying a baby. so ibig sabihin, hindi predictive ang mouth sores at abdominal pain sa pagbubuntis. ang predictive: preg test at ultrasound

  2. hello. i'm a new linux user. just bought the new asus eeepc. it runs on linux KDE. i think the desktop is Xandros.

It was shipped with a start page that looked like a cellphone's grid menu with tabs. but now it looks more like a windows desktop (thanks to some how-to's i found in the net)

got my own asus eeepc. sa GHertz, Rob place ko nabili last sunday, Nov 18.

still using its linux OS (but i'm still looking for a user-friendly way to make an XP bootable SD card (current methods are too technical for me :) )

good thing with linux is that i don't have to worry about viruses and malware

  4. have you consulted an ENT? or a pulmonologist?

treatment of OSA begins with identifying the possible cause of the obstruction. an enlarged tonsil (and adenoids in children) often cause severe obstruction. so doing a tonsillectomy can provide relief of the obstruction. but kung obese din, or medyo tight ang pharynx, baka hindi enough ang tonsillectomy. may mga surgical procedures na pwede pa i-consider to widen the pharynx. or kailangan ng weight reduction sa mga obese. then there's the nasal CPAP which will provide adequate ventilation ng lungs thru positive pressure para malabanan ang upper airway obstruction.

it's best to see your ENT early. OSA is not a dead end, untreated OSA will lead to right heart failure (kasi nga konti hangin sa baga, kulang oxygen for the brain, so the heart will pump harder and faster just to meet the demands of the brain (no. 1 priority ng body). when the heart pumps harder and faster, it'll consume more oxygen. so vicious cycle yan. the demand for oxygen will get higher and higher. it'll get to a point na hindi na kayang magpump ng heart any harder nor faster. end result, heart failure.

  5. My friend is a UP Professor who practices Chinese Medicine. I think he's better than some quacks out there because he will be the first one to tell you if you should go to a "conventional" doctor instead. Also from experience it's not good to get herbal medicines over the counter, lalo na kung chinese medicine. I mean those guys study YEARS sa university before getting license as Chinese doctors. Yon nga problema dito, nde mo alm kung yung mga nasa binondo nag aral talaga o nakapulot lang ng kuwento sa lolo nila.

anyway website ng UP guy http://www.tan-gatue.net

i also strongly recommend him. he's my batchmate at UP med

  6. I have yet to meet someone who was previously a loud snorer then after a medical intervention got completely silent whenever he/she slept.

I snore loudly and actually developed obstructive sleep apnea and therefore much comfortable sleeping almost sitting up.

I use to snore that the neighbors could hear. after the tonsillectomy now only the next room can hear me...

snoring per se is not the problem, but whether it is associated with sleep-disordered breathing. The key therefore is whether snoring is a manifestation of an obstructive disease that disturbs normal sleep and affects ventilation and perfusion and thus oxygenation of the blood.

snoring alone is not a problem. not to the snorer himself (herself :)), but it may be a problem for the partner. sometimes these snorers seek medical advice because their spouses see the problem (umm 'hear' the problem :) ).

  7. this is an interesting thread...

    ENT opinion...

vertigo is one of the most difficult symptoms to address. vertigo may be caused by a lot of diseases, and it's not a disease by itself, only a symptom. it's the type of dizziness patients' describe as 'umiikot ang mundo o paligid'. having vertigo means that there is a problem in the balance centers of the body. it may be peripheral (inner ear) or central (brain/cerebellum). the problem may not be limited to a direct problem in the balance centers, but may due to problems in blood flow to the inner ear and the brain.

    common diseases causing vertigo are:

infections (chronic otits media with complications, vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, encephalitis, brain absecess, syphilis)

neurologic disorders (stroke or cerebral infarct or bleed, degenerative neuro disorders)

    metabolic (high salt levels, endocrine)

drug use (diuretics, aspirin, antibiotics, chemotherapy)

trauma (fracture of the temporal bone (protects the inner ear), brain concussion

    bottomline:

no specific or 'de kahon' treatment for vertigo... doctors need to find out the underlying problem. most often the most important thing that would help us get the right diagnosis is the history of the patient.

what we ask in the history:

    timing of vertigo

    duration

    severity

    how often it occurs

body activity and position when the vertigo occured

other diseases like diabetes, high blood, heart diseasei

intake of prescription and nonprescription meds

if there are other symptoms like hearing loss, ringing in the ear, headaches, spine problems...

then we do certain tests for vertigo... we check for eye movements that give us clues to the nature of vertigo, we check for balance with eyes closed and eyes open, we ask patients to march or walk inside the office with eyes closed to see if he falls or veers to one side (of course we make sure that the patient doesn't get hurt when he does fall down)

we ask for hearing tests (mandatory), and other electrical tests for balance (if necessary)

CT scan and MRI may be helpful but not always done

important: if someone suddenly suffers from severe vertigo, becomes cold and clammy, and you can barely feel his pulse, complains of weakness on one side or numbness of one side, please consider the possibility of a stroke...

    treatment:

medication or positioning procedures or vestibular rehabilitation

    prevention:

it depends on the underlying problem

sorry mahaba, mahirap talaga ang vertigo, kahit sa mga ENTs. pati kami nahihilo kakaisip kung ano ang problema. pero may mga ENTs na expert sa vertigo, mga Neuro-otologists (they're usually connected to the big ENT centers like PGH, UST...)

  8. the best phone... my tanager smartphone... pda and phone in one... lots of good and useful apps... windows mobile OS

i was a nokia fan... but when this phone came out, i just had to get one.

i am a palm OS fan... what with its cool apps, which mostly are easily available in the net (cracked and patched ones too ;) )... i used to connect my nokia phone to my palm and use my palm to manage my inbox and even write messages... but when the tanager came out... wow! i realized that the pocket pc wasn't so bad...

and users have a growing online community

  9. I once asked my spritual guru the rules on how not the become a complete bore. The first two rules are:

One: Do not discuss anything relating to the weather

Two: Do not advertise your IQ.

Unless you are using for the betterment of humanity what is written in that piece of paper (your NSAT, NCEE, UPCAT, Mensa score), it is meaningless.

    i agree with you

99+ nga pala :P  asar talo pag mas mababa sa 90 sa high school namin
