  1. for koi ponds, filtration is important. you might want to invest in a good u/v light which can maintain the clearness of the water. the u/v kills of the algae, just make sure it's not easily accessible to people coz the u/v can cause sterility in people.

Medyo pricey ang UV light although my mga DIY din but in my case I don't need one since my shading (trellis + vines) yung pond ko which really minimized the problems with algae.

Another advise I forgot to mention is make sure your pond is watertight. Wag kang magtipid sa sahara and waterproof paints if you're going for a concrete pond. If you're budget is tight, you can opt for plastic liners. I saw in the local agriculture magazine some ads about it. Or kung talagang wala, go for a mud pond :upside:

  2. i'm thinking of building a koi pond sa garden namin.. any advice?

I built mine about two years ago which fits 40+ kois. The area is roughly 5' x 10'. The deepest part is around 5' where I placed a drain big pipe connected to my DIY filter composed of only two chambers filled with bio-balls and japanese matting (you can buy in Cartimar). The pump I used is enough to pump water to small water falls and small fountain (around 40 or 50 watts). But take into consideration events where there will be power outage. This happened to me a couple of months ago which killed around 5 of my twelve inch kois and the outage was just 3 hours. If you can get a battery operated air pump, the better. Kois don't like direct sunlight. They normally go to the deepest part of the pond to cool down. I placed a trellis on top with vines for shadding. All in all, I think I spent around 50K kase naka tiles pa sya with a small wooden bridge. Most of the ideas I incorporated in my pond are from the internet and a book I bought in National bookstore (sorry I forgot the title).

    Good luck to your project.

  3. I forgot the name of the cab and i dunno if this still exist but this taxi company only uses the small kia for their fleet.... their drivers sucks big time... charged us a lot for a short trip from mandaluyong to buendia

since then I made it a point to report these bastards to the dotc action center. funny how tame and repentant they are during confrontation at the dotc office.

  4. Any recommended design for a DIY bio filter? I also have a 1500 gal koi pond.

Try google for the design. There's one design I saw wherein they used a plastic barrels as containers and they placed the filter on the upper part of the barrel and the bottom acted as a reservoir. Any ideas on what media to use aside from (washed) gravel? Filter balls perhaps but I dunno where to buy one...
