  2. hi guys! long time since i posted. just sharing a recent build for a friend

  3. forgot to mention the urethane clear will be for the top coat. then wetsand from 2000 to 12000 grit. buddies Nick and Ricky did this with their bike kits and Nicks Kampfer Gundam kit. is that a new kit from Academy?

  4. good thing you guys mentioned hardware alternatives. i have yet to buy urethane clear and hardener for cars and bikes. i recently read an article on Scale Auto about it. and also a build tutorial from PLAMO where the guy used it on a Ducati kit hehehe

  5. hi doc! i haven't tried gunze's clear flat from the spray can. i use the ones from the bottle. H20 for clear flat and H30 for Clear Gloss. i just add more thinner when i see frost after spraying. you might want to decant the clear flat from the can and add thinner before spraying and gauge the results. oh and i just use clear gloss after applying all decals so when it's time to spray clear flat, the decals blend in like it's actually been painted hehe

  6. Just came from Lil's to reserve the Trumpeter 1/32 Harrier, Super Tomcat, Super Hornet, Mig Fulcrum and Eurofighter Typhoon. I was looking for Josie but Lil told me she was no longer employed there. I felt uncomfortable asking what happened... would any of you guys know? :sadsmiley02:

we were at Lil's last saturday noon. did not notice ate Josie too. got Tamiya's 1/24 Alpine A110 and Ferrari F60. dami nyan doc ah. i only have the Tomcat and Hornet :)

  7. i agree. building a kit gives us a sense of fullfilment. i got my Tamiya Basic toolkit last 2005. still serves me well to this day. i was forced to buy another sprue cutter since i could not recall where i placed the original cutter that came with the kit. happy building!

Hmmm ... I just love the memory of those long forgotten things of yesteryear -

Duco Cement - to be replaced by tubes of Revell Plastic Cement

Master's Enamel - later upgraded to Pactra Enamels (Pactra/Tamiya Enamels), Testor's, even Humbrol

from that model shop in Bricktown

    Well, enough of the past.

May I just offer this small observation with regard to basic tools for a beginner to the hobby. Though this may be a little pricey, the Tamiya basic tool kit (it comes in a small plastic case) is worth its price, and may likewise serve as a sort of pressure to continue with the hobby para naman hindi sayang yung nabili.

I'm a hoarder by nature so I bought my second set as a spare more than 20 years after and while my first set is functioning well pa rin. Of course I have other tools to use (i suffer from a malady of not only collecting kits, paints, and now tools) such as drill bits, needle files scribers, scalpels knives, sprue cutters, sanding and polishing implements etc etc etc.

And I must confess, my builds SUCK.

But an important lesson that I have learnes is that, though I may be envious of the great builds by other hobbyists, the building of any kit is my creative process - and this makes me happy.

So ok na iyon. And remember, in this day and age, in our remote country beset by multiple problems and concerns, the mere fact that we are able to indulge ourselves in a rather capital intensive hobby brings us way ahead of many people, so it is a blessing that we do this.

BTW, anybody here have any experience with applying "lozenge decals" for WWI German Planes? I'm trying to build a Zepellin Staaken.

  8. Yup... Bankee had a Make and Take and the kids went wild! [mind you, there were "kids" (yung bang 7 to 14 years - past their 21st birthdays) also].

But nevertheless it just shows to everyone that modeling ain't just for the kids... neither are they for the "over the hill" (retired people just passing their time) kind of guys. It was a lot of fun.

You should have gone there... There were guests from the south - Alabang and Laguna to be exact! Even the guys from IPMS South and Motor Modelers were there to enter their kits for the competition. They had really nice kits. There was even a car that really played music and had a video screen (at 1:24 scale!)...

like lola here, she had a lot of fun with lolo guiding her (not in photo)

  9. my batchmate's son is actually very interested in the hobby eversince he saw my 1/12 scale Moto GP bike about aweek ago. add to that the kid asked his mom if i could be his ninong. so i said ok. i'm willing to help out the kid since he also had a car kit way back given to him as a gift. so i gues they kid already has an idea. i hope i get him really interested. :)

  10. Point well taken guys...

But that being said, wouldn't you think it would be high time for all of us in the modeling community to act as a single unit and try to promote the hobby. Steiner is right. Despite the efforts of IPMS Manila and IPMS BA, it still seems ike a herculean task. Doing the efforts separately does not seem to be working. Don't you guys think it is time to work on this together?

Dr. Pepper, you keep on hiding those beautiful models of yours... show them in an exhibit! We have one coming up... why don'tyou display them for either competition or just plainly for everyone to see? How about the other guys? We at IPMS Manila would be more than happy to display your works of art for you. After all, that is what the event was made for...

i have to agree! show your wares doc! i show mine even if it's not worth showing :D

  11. thanks doc! i'm sure you can do a car or bike also. i thought i could never do this bike before too. but i think it's just like painting flat colors. the only thing with gloss paints is you should spray it in one straight motion. i have a mazda rx-7 here that i also want to salvage due to bad painting hehehe

  12. hi folks! something i built during th week. first try with bikes. this kit already lost a part but fortunately it wont be visible when the seat is in place. this will be a gift for someone hehehe. i hope it geta done soon. tips and comments are highly appreciated

  13. i finally tried decanting paint from spray can. i took that plastic tube that fits around those big syringe needles and used super glue to stick it to the spray can nozzle. then sprayed it to an empty Tamiya thinner bottle. i think this is way cheaper right guys? 200 plu yata ang Tamiya spray paint na 100ml. compared to a 10ml that goes for 75 pesos? now how long will i have to leave the bottle open before i could store it?

  14. hey doc last week i cleared out a section of my cabinet and stuffed all my unbuilt kits inside. nilabas ko lang yung mga in-progress. i plan not to open a new kit until all of those pending gets done :P
