Execs weigh in on Kobe's place in all-time Lakers ranks

As Kobe Bryant works his way around the league on a farewell tour, he is being celebrated as one of the greatest players of all time.

But is Kobe even the greatest Laker?

ESPN asked NBA executives and coaches who they believed was the greatest Laker of all time, and it wasn’t close. Magic Johnson, who along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar formed arguably the greatest duo to ever play the game, received 69 percent of the votes. Of the 65 respondents, 45 said Johnson was the greatest Laker ever.

“Magic without a doubt," said one executive who also played in the league. “I love Kobe, but Magic brought more to the table."

Bryant and Abdul-Jabbar tied for second with seven votes apiece, and Jerry West, who followed his terrific Lakers playing career with an unparalleled career in the team's front office, received five votes. Wilt Chamberlain, the greatest statistical force the game has ever known, played only five seasons with the Lakers and was named by one voter.

Those who voted for Bryant were surprised the final tally was so lopsided.

“Kobe won two titles without Shaq," said an executive. “Magic didn’t win any titles without Kareem. I thought Kobe would get more love for his five titles."

Both Johnson and Bryant won five championships in Los Angeles -- same as Abdul-Jabbar. However, Abdul-Jabbar won a title in Milwaukee before joining the Lakers in 1975.

In addition to his six championships, Abdul-Jabbar, the leading scorer in NBA history, won a league-record six MVP awards, but only three of them came with the Lakers, leaving him tied with Johnson for the most in franchise history.

Some executives said they consider Abdul-Jabbar the greatest player to ever wear a Lakers uniform and arguably the greatest player in league history, even as they consider Johnson the greatest Laker. Others said they believe the two superstars’ contrasting personalities -- Johnson's gregarious, Abdul-Jabbar's grouchy -- play a role in the perceptions of them.

“If people didn’t factor in Kareem’s personality, he would be much more in the mix [for greatest Laker]," said one longtime executive. “It’s hard to argue with either Kareem or Magic, but Kareem’s personality impacts the vote."

West, who may have better statistics -- 27 points, 6.7 assists, 5.8 rebounds per game for his career -- than either Johnson or Bryant, was also in the mix.

The Los Angeles Angeles Lakers boast the second most titles in NBA history, their 16 championships second only to the 17 claimed by their arch-rival Boston Celtics. The next closest team is the Chicago Bulls with their six NBA titles of the Michael Jordan era. The Lakers have spoiled their fans with success over the years.

The Lakers have attained that level of success mostly by being fortunate enough to almost always have teams stacked with great players. 21 Hall-of-Famers have spent at least part of their careers suiting up for the purple and gold, and the team has retired 9 players' jersey numbers to the rafters, never to be worn again in honor of those players' accomplishments.

Both of those numbers are set to increase within the next few years after Kobe Bryant retires at the conclusion of the Lakers' 2015-16 season. The five-time champion who won an MVP in 2008 and was MVP of the NBA Finals the next two years has had enough success during his time in the purple and gold to prompt the team to consider retiring both of the jersey numbers he has worn throughout his career.

Despite all of this success, NBA executives and coaches polled anonymously by Chris Broussard of ESPN still rank Bryant as tied for second-best Lakers player of all-time:

Magic Johnson had plenty of success over his time as a Laker and is by no means a bad choice as the best player to ever play for the franchise. When comparing two guards who have attained as many accolades and victories as Bryant and Johnson, it really is a matter of personal preference, and likely depends on one's generation.

For Lakers fans who grew up in the 80's and 90's, Johnson or Abdul-Jabbar are likely to to top this list. Fans older than that may choose West or Chamberlain, just as fans raised more recently are almost sure to pick Bryant or even Shaquille O'Neal. The argument just illustrates how lucky Lakers fans are to have so many great players to choose from as the best they have ever seen.

“When West joined the Lakers, basketball had just moved to Los Angeles, and the sport really had no followers to speak of," an executive said. Other players who got votes were Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain

“Jerry came along as this young player, this Olympian, and did things that were just incredible without the benefit of ever, ever having an outstanding center until Wilt came along at the end of Jerry’s career. He put basketball on the map in Southern California and did things that to this day are just mind-blowing, particularly in the playoffs."

The most interesting comparison was made by a general manager who tried to explain why Johnson’s five championships seemed to hold more weight than Bryant’s.

“Kobe [ticks] people off and Magic usually said all the right things," the GM said. “They were different players. [Magic] made everyone better. [Kobe] made the team better. In my heart, I know it’s Magic [who’s the greatest Laker], but Kobe was unreal at times.

“Kobe is like Anakin Skywalker. The force was strong with him and he could not control it at times. He had too many weapons and abused the power. He was loved as a young Jedi, hated during his prime as a ruler, and now everyone’s coming back around at the end. Magic is Yoda, always teaching and making others better -- the leader that elevates others.”

    - Since this was to be Kobe's last season. This week NBA executives around the league were asked who they think is the greatest Laker ever. The results had Magic leading most of the votes followed by Kareem and Kobe who were tied for 2nd. Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain were also voted, but Magic was the overall favorite by a landslide .

Here is a list of Laker players who you think should be considered as the greatest Laker of all time. Anyone can add a player not on this list if they think they deserve to be the Greatest Laker.

    Magic Johnson

    Kobe Bryant

    Kareem Abdul Jabbar

    Jerry West

    Wilt Chamberlain

    Jamaal Wilkes

    James Worthy

    Shaquille O'Neal

    Elgin Baylor

    Bob Mcadoo

    Gail Goodrich

I think the the NBA execs are right in putting Magic ahead of Kobe but i have to note that out of all the players to wear purple and gold. Kobe deserves some attention because he clearly is the most talented but overall goes to Magic for being the consummate team player that he is.

i consider AC Green .. 2 eras include si green sa champion line up - showtime era and Kobe Shaq era.

  5.

medyo nakulangan ako kay CTC sa pag coach or pag deploy ng mga tao nya, halos walang pahinga yung mga players niya during 4th quarter, sila din yung babad sa OT. pati si greg at LA hindi man lang pinagpahinga kahit 1minute, dito ko na appreciate yung ginagawang re-shuffle or Palitan ng tao ni Pido. at least laging may fresh legs every 2 to minutes kaya nakakatakbo agad sila even their big men. kaya nung bandang huli hingal na at hindi na maka shoot ng FT si Greg, si Japeth naman dapat maaga nya pinasok or hindi na lang nya pinaglaro pa dahil usually kapag malamig pa, sablay sa FT yan. mas okay pa sana mag laro si JDV.

then yung last 8 secs, i'm just wondering kung bakit si Greg pinasok pa din ni CTC for defensive purposes, hindi mo na siya maasahan sa biglang habulan ng player, dapat either sina Chris or JDV na ang ang pinasok nya, much quicker dahil ang intention nila is to intercept or to steal yung bola katulad ng ginawa nila sa Hotshots last xmas.

kung napasok lang sana ni LA yung isang FT nya, malamang nasa semis na sila... well anyway, breaks of the game... better luck (again) next conference..

Correct gumawa pa ng rules na 5 seconds pwede palang di apply specially end game seconds nalang .......at may review pa daw pag pasok ng last 2 minutes para ma correct yung call .... IT a Bull s@%t talaga

  6. Tanung lang po pag yung asawang babae eh nangaliwa at napagbiyan ng chance mag bago pero tinuloy pa din ang pangloloko sa asawa.
