  1. Just want to share somethin in this old thread :)

A normal person generally has 2 growth spurts, one during infancy and the other during puberty. After puberty, the bones' epiphyseal plates close, which would prevent any further bone growth. Female puberty starts and ends earlier, at around age 18, while male puberty may last up to age 21. To sum it all up, your height, after puberty, is your final maximum height.

Posture makes a lot of difference in the perception of height; although a good posture may only increase your height by a few centimeters, the general visual impact of a good posture will make a person seem A LOT taller. Then there is the infamous Ilizarov method, which is, in a nutshell, damages you leg bones in specific points while applying traction on the bones to allow it to grow during the process of bone healing. Be warned though, this procedure is notoriously dangerous and could end to amputation if not done appropriately or if complications arise.

    Hope it helps :)

  2. Why are students failing?

Oh my. I mean no offense with what I'm about to say, I'm simply expressing my honest opinion. I hope no one gets offended by this, and I apologize in advance to anyone who would be.

It would be virtually impossible to grasp one concrete reason. It is really, the culmination of various factors, such as the Filipino's culture of mediocrity, the ineffectiveness of the educational system our government is implementing, and the incompetence of SOME (not all!) teachers who shouldn't be teachers in the first place. Baka nga pati yung malnutrition ng mga estudyante ay nakaka-interfere sa brain development nila, which would of course translate into difficulty in the classroom.

IMHO, I think you should focus more on how you could help your students, instead of focusing on why they're failing. Syempre mahalagang malaman ang puno't dulo ng problema ng mga estudyante para magawan ng solusyon, but since it would be difficult to pinpoint a single concrete reason, you should focus more on what you could do to prevent the failure of your students.

What would make students study harder?

This is a question of motivation. And considering everything that's been said, like Filipino students being lazy, mediocre, and media-crazed (and I totally agree with all these), you should really think about what motivates students nowadays. Responsible students who could motivate themselves to study are becoming a rare sight. Therefore, motivating your students to study for the mere sake of being educated is, in my opinion, futile; it is a fact that the importance of a good education is terribly underrated nowadays. So, try to motivate your students with fun, or anything that sparks their interest, e.g. pop culture, music, telenovelas, food, etc. It is, after all, the teachers' responsibility to motivate their students. But then again, it all depends on what you're trying to teach, so make it your personal challenge to integrate your students' interests to what you're trying to teach. It's a tall order, and is definitely difficult, but hey, at least your students are learning, and that's the important thing, right?

I wish you and your students luck :)

  3. Many people will suggest to simply quit smoking altogehter and deal with its difficulties; mind over matter, supposedly. BUt the thing is, your body is working against you, through withdrawal symptoms, especially if you're a heavy smoker; your body is essentially addicted to nicotine. And unless you have tremendous will power, i suggest you use nicotine patches. These patches are attached to your skin, and the Nicotine in it will go to your bloodstream. This is a much better alternative than cold turkey (quitting all-out right away), and it will reduce your withdrawal symptoms.

Essentially, smoking is an addiction that is caused by the Nicotine in the burnt tobacco. The Nicotine you absorb from smoking creates a chemical imbalance in your brain, and to compensate, your brain cuts back on its own chemicals (which is supposedly a reason why heavy smokers become DUMBER hehe). If you suddenly quit smoking, your nicotine supply is cut off, and your brain is again left with a chemical imbalance, which causes the various withdrawal symptoms.

Therefore, in trying to quit smoking, using nicotine patches is better. The nicotine concentration in these patches vary, and you can graduate from higher to lower nicotine concentrations in time. This method gives your brain time to adjust its chemical balance, thus reducing the various "difficulties" in trying to quit smoking.

Also, from a psychological perspective, smoking is supposedly an effect of oral fixation (Freudian theory). So aside from using the patches, try chewing gum whenever you feel the urge to smoke.

    Goodluck :thumbsupsmiley:
