  1. tito noy, it was pathetic..very, very pathetic...have you forgotten about this: prevention is better then the cure

now you're scrambling doing damage control that is costly and difficult. where will you get the money to pay for the hospitalization, indemnification, etc...and expensive pr campaign now your govt is cash-strapped? impose vat on hostage taking?

you were able to rush to the scene in the aftermath, but how come you were not able to this when the situation was critical and the "slaughter" has not happened yet? perhaps, you could have prevented the slaughter because the mere sight of your smiling face could have pacified mendoza and brought a smile to his face, too ...and because of this, perhaps, he willingly put down his arms and ran to you for a hug while the hostages were happily getting off the bus.

tito noy, we your bosses would never bother if you used wangwang to rush to the scene.

sorry to disagree with you and your officials if you consider the hostage-taking just a police matter. you could have stepped in at once because it was also a very urgent matter of national interest. why?

    1. because the hostages are hongkong nationals

    2. because hongkong provides employment to hundreds of thousands of ofws

    3. because the ofws help keep our economy afloat

    4. because failure to save the hostages would bring a lot of negative effects to our country in general and to your administration in particular?

did you and your officials analyzed the situation and made the above considerations? if you did, we your bosses would have seen you rushing to the scene like you did when you were eager and excited to go to the same place where your inauguration was held. and you arrived very early at the quirino grandstand...and you did even used wangwang to travel from quezon ave to luneta. yes you can use wangwang this time even if malacanang is much much nearer to luneta

the situation could have been different have you or your next highest official stepped in before the famous sunset manila bay emerged. the situation could have been resolved peacefully before this time...and perhaps you, mendoza, and the hostages could have relaxed your nerves by watching together happily ever after a stressful day.

  2. a law that prohibits all public officials (elected and appointed) from and punishes them for hanging billboards, streamers or banners which carry announcements of programs, projects and the like (which are either sponsored by private groups or funded by taxpayers' money).

likewise to be banned are their ubiquitous and annoying banners containing messages that greet (kuno) us on every occasion, event or holiday. they want us to think that they are thoughtful and caring. sinong niloloko nila. obviously, these banners that always carry their names and pictures, have no other purpose but to gain publicity and name recall so that when election comes ayos na buto-buto. so self-serving. ang galing ano, tuloy-tuloy na kampanya, before and after elections, na pala taktika para tuloy-tuloy ang pamamayagpag sa pulitika.

our politicians have really mastered the art of politicking.

our honorable public officials should know better. (m)alas, they refuse to know that their stupendous banners contribute to urban blight, add to eyesores and pose hazards to their beloved constituencies (ikabit ba naman kung saan-saan at kahit sa kawad ng kuryente!).

speaking of hazards pose by "political" banners, myself and my pregnant wife nearly got hit by a speeding taxi one late afternoon 2 days ago, as we were crossing the pedestrian lane along visayas ave (qc) corner quezon memorial circle (also in qc). muntikan na kami. di naman lingid sa ating kaalaman kung paano magmaneho ang marami sa atin at ang kawalang respeto sa pedestrian lane (imbes na mag-slowdown, harurot pa), doble ingat ako lagi sa pagtawid lalo na't kasama ko sa pagtawid ay buntis.

attached to a lamppost of a concrete island/barrier situated along the said pedestrian lane is this banner (about 2.5 x 7 ft, patayo) that proclaims govt drive or fight (or something to that effect) against poverty and carries a big photo of a high govt official. this banner blocks a pedestrian's peripheral view. it also blocks a driver's view, whose turning right, of a pedestrian who's crossing the lane. pagtapat mo dito habang tumatawid ka, di mo makikita ang nasa kaliwa mo. dahil sa di-paggalang sa pedestrian lane dito sa atin, obligado kang mag-doble ingat kasama na ang pagtingin sa kaliwa at sa kanan. pero paano kung may sagabal sa pagtingin ng pedestrian at ng driver?

kasi kahit saan na lang ikinakabit mga banners ng mga pulitiko. these banners are as hazardous as those in edsa.

back to the proposed law, it should also probihit politicos from and punish them for painting, engraving, etching or printing their names on all projects funded by taxpayers' money -- all that include infrastructures, social services, vehicles, relief goods. medicines, etc. labelling their projects with only thir (politicos') names is UNFAIR to all taxpayers whose names should have been printed too. the politicos could do so, if and only if funds came from their own pockets.

this bad practice creates the wrong impression and sends the wrong signals to the electorate. this is the stuff that gives life to patronage politics which in turn breeds graft and corruption in public office.

little did they know that their beloved politiko had to implement his/her pet projects in order to earn a handsome kickback, and had to print his/her name in bold letters for free publicity and campaign pitch. in cleverly crediting all these projects in his/her name alone, he/she is able to use patronage for political advantage. feeling ng mga tao nagkaka-utang na loob sila sa kanya.

have u noticed that when public officials talk about their "achievements" or projects in their areas, they always use the first-person noun and verb combination, whether in english or in dialects, that roughly and subtly pertains to the politiko as being personally responsible alone for making his/her project. kaya pansinin niyo paggamit nila ng "nagpatayo ako", "pinagawa ko", "nagbigay ako", "i constructed", "i gave", etc.

pati media, gawain din nila itong wrong use of words pagdating sa ganitong usapan. kaya di na bago sa atin mga news reports na ganito: "public official so and so gave 10 million pesos to typhoon victims", di ba pwedeng " public official so and so ordered the release...?

  3. in fairness to the online stock trading firm i am talking about, they finally sent me via email (with no sender's address) the to-be-printed registration form -- but after myself making 5 email requests and more than 3 phone follow-ups. there was no accompanying explanation or alibi why it took 3 weeks for their email to reach me.

dahil sa inis, di ko pa itinuloy application ko rito. i am looking for an alternative.

  4. grabe dami nang nasasayang na araw. imagine, nakailang email na ako sa kanila at wala pa ring reply. one day of last week i called their hotline, the agent told that they emailed na raw that day. ako pa niloloko nila, eh kala-logout ko lang sa email acct ko before i called at wala pa yong *%$#**%#@ na form yon.

  5. an online stock trading firm (bank affiliated) is giving me headaches with its registration. almost 10 days since i registered online and i havent gotten past the registration stage. the mother of this problem was when i registered online but unable to print the form wherein i have to affix my signature and which i have to submit for verification and approval of my trade acct.

i registered online at a popular cafe. when i was about to print the form generated after filling up the rquired fields and hitting the submit button, i was dismayed to know that i cannot print directly from the pc station i was using. i had to be contented with cut-and-paste technique to their server pc..and i forgot to pray the pc wont hang. well, it hanged the hell of the machine and i never got it printed.

well, fortunately i received a thank-you email (bec i hit the submit button) afterwards, also telling me to just send email if i was unable to print the form so they can email it to me. which i did and i automatically clicked the reply tab to make the request. days past, no form emailed to me. i made another request, no reply again. i made the 3rd request, still no luck.

i cannot register again online because i would be rejected. so i called the hotline but they were not able to provide me with an explanation. i have to wait for several days while they are figuring out daw.

just consider this, it would take 10 days for the verification and approval of a trade acct upon submission of the printed form (with signatures) to the main ofc. add some more days if u submit to a branch that will submit to the main ofc. now, 10 days have passed and i havent got hold of that form. im still waiting and waiting..til when? when the stocks are plunging?

with other online stock trading firms, would it take this long?

precious days are being wasted and we are talking about stock investment..and being online at that.

who among you would disagree that time is not essential to stock investment? time lost is an opportunity lost, right?

there's a downside to this online thingy after all.

  7. sir jazzy,

  8. another matter: is non-attendance to a team-building seminar a valid ground for disciplinary action or suspension of an employee? what if the employee is a committed one and a team-player (he delivers and productive in the midst of a demoralizing situation) but does not believe in said activity would bring about positive change in the workplace? is his/her suspension or any DA ironic because it runs contrary to the purpose of team-building seminar which is to build a bridge between employees and management to improve productivity?

do you think team building seminars would create better team players and productive employees given the bad situation would remain unchanged after the seminar?

    good day

allow me to focus on the purpose of a team-building seminar. ideally, this activity is intended to harmonize the existing forces (i would always use this term - force) within a particular organization or a team and to harness this to achieve greater goals or reach higher altitudes (to translate that it's productivity both individual and as a team). the program is composed of series of structured and non-structured activities that is geared to enhance the teamwork by focusing on the individual team member, each capacity to include strengths and weaknesses (forces) and how all these contributes to team success.

the participation of this activity should be 100% to achieve its purpose, meaning there should be an attendance of 100% among the committed/non-committed individuals. remember, the activity was done to unify both forces or shall i say to make a common ground for those committed and non-committed. question, can you call an employee a committed team player if he fails to attend this activity? yes or no? we should always remember that the success or failure of a team building program is primarily attributed to the participants itself. this is a tool an employee can use to air his/her concerns. change would not happen overnight especially from bad to good but if someone wants a change that someone needs to do something to achieve it. a team building seminar could be one of the step so missing it would mean foregoing a chance to change.

here is one thing i want to emphasize, we may have problem with personalities in the management but please be objective, the organization does not only speak of these people it encompasses everyone. i know how annoyed we are of these managers but like everyone they are still a signature away from termination. so think broadly, continue to do good and never give these people a basis to institute DA (failure to attend to company sanctioned activity could be one).

remember this "Tough times never last tough people do"

    thanks

well, barely a week after the team building activity was conducted, the team started to break. a feud erupted among bosses; factions sprouted among the staff. to think that the organization (a development-work oriented one at that), which is on cost-cutting ways according to the boss but whose flamboyant ways contradict his decree to cut cost, spent thousands of pesos on such a meaningless activity. you know what they did? a couple of games, drinking and, of course, videoke. there's no problem with having fun and enjoyment. in fact, it was needed and i would be much into it if i joined it. but there's a problem with sidestepping the important aspect of the activity: which is to bring out the problems of the organization and find solutions to them. this was a golden opportunity to tackle the issues that hinder the building of the team. pinakawalan pa nila.

yes, there was some sharing and crying alright. but what did they cry about? well, about individual personal problems and experiences. there was no sharing and crying about problems in the office. it was said (in murmurs, of course) the facilitator was deliberately instructed to avoid "sensitive" matters. as for the office -- or should I say the organizational -- matters, the big boss monopolized the talking. She presented her own plan and direction with almost finality, as if the staff has nothing to say or contribute regarding what steps or plan their organization, which they are part of, should be taking or doing. It was a one-way street: the boss dictates, the staff obeys. To think that this is a development organization, and the norm in development organization is being consultative and participatory. The boss and staff plan and work together – that should be the set-up. In any organization, the rank-and-file are also important for they also have something to contribute in making their organization attain its objectives.

Well, our boss is relatively new, coming from a govt agency where he also called the shots, being one of the top officials. Its no secret how the system and people work in this sector. Sanay kasing nag-uutos at umaastang VIP. When they join the private sector, malas lang when they bring their bad habits and continue their pampered ways.

This is the second time I observed a team-building activity became a heart-breaking outcome in its aftermath. I joined the first one and we faced the organizational and operational problems head-on. Basically there were two operational groups in the organizational structure. There was an eagerness on the part of both groups (at least on us staff) to resolve their differences. Since it involved organizational and management issues, the facilitator said he had to talk to the bosses of both groups. He tried to and nothing happened. He got his paycheck and we’re back to our old feuding and “silipan” ways.

I didn’t join this time because at first glance I was not able to see even a tinge of seriousness and sincerity of this activity. yet i never cease to work, and work hard, as a team player.

  9. about leaves and team-building...

i cannot understand why leaves--especially sick leaves -- are forfeited when unused for a certain period of time. basically you can't consume your leaves bec there simply was no opportunity to do so because of workload. and because there is no program that would enable employees to use and enjoy their leaves.

as for sick leaves, they should not be forfeited but should be converted to cash. because forfeiture is like punishing an employee who was able to stay healthy all year round. he should be rewarded instead of punishing him--by converting his unused leaves into cash. in fact, many employees -- the martyr or committed ones -- go to work even when they are not feeling well just to attend to or finish important tasks. this itself is an act of sacrifice, foregoing their right to take sick leaves and showing concern for the company or organization.

i cannot understand this practice considering that we take pride of our country as being advanced in labor standards and rights and thus ahead of other countries. well, middle east countries-- which we thought are not labor friendly-- have fared bettter. they have allowed our ofws take their one-full month paid vacation per year. those who don't go on vacation are able to convert these vacation leaves to cash.

is their a provision in the labor code which says unused sick leaves shall be forfeited? what i know is that the labor code is clear about the right of the workers to be granted leave credits after a certain period.

another matter: is non-attendance to a team-building seminar a valid ground for disciplinary action or suspension of an employee? what if the employee is a committed one and a team-player (he delivers and productive in the midst of a demoralizing situation) but does not believe in said activity would bring about positive change in the workplace? is his/her suspension or any DA ironic because it runs contrary to the purpose of team-building seminar which is to build a bridge between employees and management to improve productivity?

do you think team building seminars would create better team players and productive employees given the bad situation would remain unchanged after the seminar?

    this situation consists of:

    • a stressful work environment;

    • top mgt powerplays, terrorizes and treats staff as vassals who could be shouted at anytime in front of everybody else;

    • welfare of management always comes ahead that of staff's;

    • and there is double standard in policies (ex: managers were able to raise their per diem while cutting staff's per diem into half).

so which is the better team-builder, a workplace conducive to working happily and productively where there is mutual respect between the staff and management, where staff welfare is given attention, and where policies are fair to all, or a vacation-type, short-lived team-building seminar?

the bottomline always for workers is their well-being and welfare. is there a better substitute to a happy and contented worker in a happy workplace in attaining better productivity?

no wonder companies are now trying to imitate google's or other techie companies' ways of making their workers creative and productive. no wonder too, these companies are profitable.
