My first car was a Ford Escort wagon, and despite the body style I'd be tearing up and down the UP campus getting the puny 1.3 liter engine to shred tires which it did happily thanks to an ultra low 4.11 rear end.

 

Car racing was done around the streets of Ortigas Center then which was still devoid of buildings. Tommy de Castro, son of the late Architect and car collector CC de Castro drove the most admirable Ford Escort there, the Mark 1 RS2000. It had a 125 hp, 2 liter OHC engine from the Ford Pinto. It was fast but front heavy and would have made a great drift car.

 

Just before graduation, I upgraded to a Mark 2 Escort which was (don't ask me why) then referred to as the "Brenda". Hindi siya brain-damaged. This was popular in the local car rallies where the late Arthur Tuazon (father of today's JP Tuazon of Tuazon Racing Academy) competed with the RS1600 and then the RS2000 Mark 2 Escorts often in competition with Toyota Mark IIs and Celicas driven by the late Pocholo Ramirez (Dobermaxx correct me if I'm wrong) and Dante Silverio.

there is fairly good restored Ford Escort in St. Ignatius village in QC!

enter thru C5 gate(just very near the intersection comming from marikina riverbank/marcos hiway) turn left on the first street and see it on the right, usually parked on the outside a couple of houses from the corner! :o)
