  1. The 85mm Nikkor is a really nice lens design - uses the old Tessar lens formula, making it a very sharp lens design. However, with a DSLR and the "multiplcation effect" that would be like a 125mm lens, whiight be a little long for portraits. In that case, I'd go with the 60mm, although I like the perspective of the85 much, much better. It will flatten out the image and reduce barrel distortion, as well as reducing any foreshortening effects if you have the camera tilted down for any reason.

A note on the "multiplcation effect" of lenses on DSLRs. You DO NOT really multiply the focal length by 1.5 or 1.6 (depending on your camera). And an aperture of f/2.8remains f/2.8. What happens is that most lenses designed for 35mm cameras have a coverage of at least 45mm (the diagonal of a frame of 35mm film). Most digital sensors (with the exception of the high-end "Full-frame" sensors) are much smaller, so they do not fill the whole circle of coverage, rather they fill a smaller part of the circle of coverage. As a result, they capture as much image area as a lens 1.5x the focal length would capture on 35mm film. Let me repeat - focal length, aperture, distortion, depth of field, etc. DO NOT CHANGE. Only the image capture area changes.

Now to filters for portraits to reduce skin blemishes. Try a green filter. Also try the "soft focus" filters you can sometimes buy (an alternative would be to take a UV filter and smear a VERY light coating of Vaseline on the front).

Hey man thanks soooo much ulit! I was thinking of getting the 18-200 VR but a rendezvous with a pinoy photogrpaher here days ago and intense research made me think of getting a prime than a zoom. I will lose AF when I use this on my D40 that would be favorable to me, a good time to learn manual focus. I read 3 feet is the closest focus range, that would be enough for me.

Here are my samples on my recent trip to town, kit lens only. I'm a sucker for portraits

  2. I am thinking of purchasing a Nikkor 85mm 1.8, or a 60mm 1.8 macro, prime for portraits. Has anyone used this or any feedbacks? I want to use this for indoor gigs or outdor portraits. Lastly, what filter do you guys use for protraits? Something for skin tone and blemish reduction.

  3. Copy the manual? Who, me? I don't need to copy the manual. I KNOW what each of these modes mean. I've been doing digital photography since 1991 - one of my cameras (the Apple QuickTake150) is in the NY Museum of Modern Art as an example of good design, and I own a couple of patents in digital photography. I've been doing photography since 1969 - I process my own film and do my own printing, both film and digital. And I was on the IT8 committee that defined the first ICC color profiles. I HAVE posted some of my shots. Do some back reading, why don't you? I'll go down any rathole talking about photography that you want to - try me any time! But be prepared to back up anything you say with solid technical data!

Since you have mentioned about the ICC color profile, I have a question. I have been exposed to the printing industry and I am curious abot the LAB, RGB, and the CMYK color profiles. What are thier differences? Why can't it be just one color system? Or is it like the MP3 industry, each organization/company makes thier own system? I have only rudimentary information about them.

  4. hehe.. you'd be surprised at the number of users still using win98 and 2000.

ganito kasi.. maraming mga surplus computers out there (go to pioneer street at boni). when you buy the CPU nakadikit ang mga COA stickers of Win98, 2000, etc. para makatipid and para makalusot sa license these Wa-is users stick to the OS indicated in the COA sticker. o-ha.. "licensed" software.

I actually bought 5 CPUs from HMR Philippines with WinXP Pro COA. bwahahaha.. I can use these computers "legal" in an internet cafe or office setting and I can get the updates legal, as long as I use the license key printed on the COA

What does COA mean? I have a friend who uses Ubuntu Linux as an alternative for the liscensed ones.

  5. Speaking of networks, how do you trace someone who is stealing an IP address in an office network? Especially if you are not the admin. I have tried getmac and arp commands but it only traced the MAC address but no computer name. I want to know if there is a way to trace the MAC address to a specific computer name on a network. Has anyone done this or am I doing this the wrong way. Anyone, please help me. :D

  6. Before you make a move to vista, don't forget to download the vista compatible drivers of from your hardware manufacturer specially the motherboard. And most XP compatible software may not work with vista even if you have successfully installed them. I noticed if my software installer or driver is both windows xp and 2000 compatible, it may work with the installation and sometimes it will run. But for most, it does not. Kung bootleg OS baka kasi yung mga Release Candidate or Beta ang nakuha mo.
I have not bought that installer yet. I'm just asking some questions just to inform myself what I am going to use. That particular feature annoys me.ooops! double entry ^Pakibura na lang. :)

  8. Hello. first of all, why did you need to reformat your laptop? were you downgrading from a Vista OS (usually new laptops come installed with Vista). Also, the drivers that also came along with your laptop may be for Vista only. Check your CD and look for a WinXP version of your drivers.

By the way, Linpus Linux was the default OS on my laptop before I chaged it to XP

  9. When we purchased these laptops last april it has linux as a default OS. Since my friend has the XP installer, we'd just install it ourselves. What's werid is when I tried to use the Add Hardware Wizard it tell me that the wirelwss card did not pass thier "windows signature" of some sort. Maybe it has some thing to do with the OS, I dont know. I would like to install it but I tried it once on other computers and it picks what applications to run, and it does not allow bootleg installers to continue. That is indirect problem, I cant switch to vista if they cant allow these kind of applicaions to continue; I can't delay my work because of this inconvinience.

My very, very, very last options are to either repair this at acer when I get home or sell it and buy an new one.

  11. I have a challenge for you guys, I have exhausted my resouces so I am resorting to get help from others.

I have an Acer Aspire 5050 laptop. My problem is the wireless adapter could not start (code 10). It's indicated on the device manager; it has drivers installed I even downloaded the latetest drivers form the wireless manufacturer themselves. But still it could not start.

Prior to that, I have a friend who bought the same laptop as I am on the same day and installed the wireless network drivers from his installation CD (I never used mine, since we're also installing the everything including the OS on that same day). It worked fine the drivers detected the card. Then, a few weeks after I had to reformat my computer and used the driver installation CD that came with my laptop. That is when the problem started, I was trying to test the wifi on my laptop but the indicator for the wireless adapter near the switch doesn't turn on and there it indicates that it could not start. I tried installing other drivers but still it was futile. The problem still reccurs and I need my laptop for connecting to a WIFI network.

My wireless card is Atheros AR5006X.

    OS-WinXP SP2

    Anyone please help me. :goatee:

  12. My less-than-amatuer attempts at making a portrait on my D40. Please give me some C&C, beat me up real good. I need it.
