Pards, brave ka for opening a thread about hockey. Lol!

I don't follow it anymore. The last great generation that I followed was that of Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemiueux, Fedorov, and all those great teams at that time - the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Of course, nandun ako before that, the time of Gretzky, Bobby Orr and all those great Boston Bruins teams.

Good luck on this thread, and I hope madaming mag-post, para update naman ako. Cheers!

Thanks....the likes of Mario Lemiueux, Fedorov and Jagr may have long been over....but a new breed of ice heroes emerge.

The likes of Alex Ovechkin (Washington), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh), Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles), Jonathan Toews (Chicago) and others lead the way for the league to reach greater heights.

Anyway, here's a throwback....the Chicago Blackhawks getting the Stanley Cup (NHL Stanley Cup 2015)

Stars win fourth straight, top Predators in OT Janmark scores in OT, also has assist

by Robby Stanley / NHL.com Correspondent

NASHVILLE -- Mattias Janmark's goal 3:49 into overtime gave the Dallas Stars a 3-2 win against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Monday.

Forward Tyler Seguin took the original shot that was stopped by Predators goaltender Carter Hutton. Seguin was able to get the puck over to Janmark, who put it into an empty net for his 12th goal.

Dallas (37-15-5) won their fourth straight game.

Florida Panthers hold off Penguins 2-1 in shootout

By George Richards

grichards@miamiherald.com

The Panthers were clinging to a thin thread Monday night, hoping the one-goal advantage picked up in the first period would be enough to beat a dangerous Pittsburgh team.

As anyone could have predicted, it was not.

No, the Penguins tied things up with 3:19 remaining before the Panthers prevailed 2-1 in a five-round shootout at BB&T Center.

The victory was especially sweet for the Panthers, a team outscored 10-3 in two weekend losses coach Gerard Gallant described as “pathetic.”

With a retooled lineup because of a variety of injuries, Gallant was singing a different tune Monday.

“It was a good game against a real good team,’’ said Gallant, whose team had lost its previous two games to Pittsburgh in overtime. “Every time we play them it’s a battle. We finally got on the winning side. We finally got the two points — and we needed them.”

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first period when Nick Bjugstad redirected a long pass from Alex Petrovic and beat Marc-Andre Fleury.

Florida had few prime-scoring chances as it appeared to play a prevent-style through much of the second and third with its Band-Aid lineup, yet had a few opportunities and failed to cash in.

The Penguins, who came back to beat the Panthers over a week ago despite trailing 2-0 late in the third, tied things up Monday when Chris Kunitz’s shot just got past the out stretched glove of backup goalie Al Montoya.

Montoya was strong in net once more for the Panthers, perhaps earning another start Thursday when San Jose comes to town.

Filling in for Roberto Luongo, Montoya stopped 31 shots — including four in overtime before stopping the final four shots in the shootout.

N.Y.I. 4, Detroit 1: Red Wings cool off, drop matinee

Helene St. James - Detroit Free Press

NEW YORK -- A sloppy performance left the Detroit Red Wings without points for the first time in six games.

They lost, 4-1, to the New York Islanders in a matinee today at the Barclays Center. After a solid defensive stretch, the Wings have allowed nine goals the last two games.

The Wings have beaten the Islanders twice the past three weeks but this time allowed three goals in the second period. Pavel Datsyuk scored in the third period as the Wings avoided what would have been their first shutout of the season.

The game began about 18 hours after the Wings had wrapped up a victory over the Boston Bruins at home. There wasn't much pace on either side at the start, and the Wings had just two shots on net when they went on a power play eight minutes into the game. Dylan Larkin used a wrist shot to force a save from Thomas Greiss but, otherwise, the Wings didn't make anything happen.

Gustav Nyquist fired a shot that got by Greiss, only to clank off the left goal post as the Wings got their legs going. Brendan Smith blocked a shot during an Islanders power play to help limit New York to eight shots on net in the first period.

Jimmy Howard got the start and made a save on John Tavares early in the second period, as the Islanders surged in shots. Darren Helm went to the penalty box at 5:53, and the Wings faced a second penalty k*ll. Tavares had two quick chances, both turned away by Howard.

Some handy stickwork by Brock Nelson put the Wings in a hole midway through the game. Nelson batted Ryan Strome's pass out of the air, got a stick on the puck and fired a shot that went in off Howard's glove. That the Wings were the ones who had played the day before became more and more evident in the second period, which saw them get outshot and take a third penalty when Datsyuk was called for delay of game.

The Islanders used the power play to double their lead, with Josh Bailey snapping in Johnny Boychuk's rebound at 14:57. The Wings got a second power play the last minute of the period. Marek Zidlicky, a trade-day acquisition by the Wings a year ago, made it 3-0 a little more than a minute later, when he crashed in from the blue line and beat Howard with a backhand. Howard had no help from teammates on the last two goals, with Xavier Oeullet, especially, having a couple of rough shifts.

The Wings began the third period with a minute left on a power play but made no use of it. They got another power play when Nelson was called for closing his hand on the puck at 6:19, but Abdelkader was called for using his stick to push Howard's stick back to him at 6:52.

A turnover by the Islanders led to Datsyuk sniping the puck at 9:31, but that wasn't enough to stir the Wings to better play. Horrible defensive coverage left Strome free to convert on a no-look pass by Tavares at 12:14.

Blackhawks stop slide with 7-2 victory over Maple Leafs

By JAY COHEN (AP Sports Writer) 44 minutes ago AP - Sports

CHICAGO (AP) -- The sellout crowd chanted ''M-V-P! M-V-P!'' and Patrick Kane cracked a wry grin.

It was a sweet ending to a difficult homestand for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kane had a goal and three assists, and the Blackhawks stopped a three-game slide with a dominant 7-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

''We've been, I don't want to say struggling offensively, but we've been waiting for a game like this,'' Kane said.

Andrew Shaw, Brent Seabrook, Artemi Panarin and Teuvo Teravainen each had a power-play goal, helping Chicago salvage the finale of a lackluster four-game homestand. It was the Blackhawks' first game since they lost Marian Hossa to a left leg injury, likely sidelining the veteran forward for a couple of weeks.

''It was good that we got something positive leaving here,'' coach Joel Quenneville said.

Scott Darling got the start in place of a resting Corey Crawford and made 35 saves, including an outstanding sprawling stop on Nick Spaling in the second period. Two of Darling's six wins this season have come against lowly Toronto.

Mark Arcobello broke up Darling's bid for his second career shutout with a rebound goal with 8:54 remaining. Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau added a power-play goal and James Reimer had 25 saves for the Maple Leafs, who closed out a 1-4 road trip.

''Just forget it. We got tattooed, that's the bottom line,'' Toronto coach Mike Babcock said.

Goals by Brandon Mashinter, Shaw and Seabrook staked Chicago to a 3-0 lead through two periods, and the Blackhawks blew it open with an impressive flurry in the third. Beginning with Panarin's 19th goal of the season, the defending Stanley Cup champions scored on four of six shots.

Kane made it 5-0 with his 34th of the season, sending a wrist shot past Reimer on the stick side. Teravainen then stopped a 17-game scoring drought with his 10th of the season, and defenseman Viktor Svedberg converted a big slap shot from the low slot at 10:20.

Santorelli helps Ducks defeat Flames Anaheim improves to 9-1-1 in past 11 games

by Aaron Vickers / NHL.com Correspondent

CALGARY -- Considered longshots before the Christmas break, the Anaheim Ducks moved two points closer to first place in the Pacific Division with a 6-4 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.

Mike Santorelli scored twice and Frederik Andersen made 33 saves for the Ducks, who remained in second place in the division but pulled to within five points of the first place Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks have gone 16-4-2 since the Christmas break.

Hampus Lindholm, Corey Perry, Sami Vatanen and Rickard Rackell also scored for the Ducks (28-19-8). Anaheim is 9-1-1 in the past 11 games, and has points in 12 of the past 14 games (11-2-1).

"It's a little better atmosphere. We're having fun," Perry said. "Everybody knows their role, everybody's playing their role and everyone's doing the right things. It's working out right now. You just want to get in the playoffs. It doesn't matter where you are. Just get into the playoffs."

Jiri Hudler had two goals and an assist, and Johnny Gaudreau and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Flames (25-27-3). Calgary, sixth in the Pacific, has lost two straight games.

"There's still a lot of games to play but we've got to go on a streak obviously," Flames forward Mikael Backlund said. "If we can manage to do that, we'll be right in the mix but we've got to find a way to get some wins and get on a roll pretty quickly."

Perry helped the Ducks rally from a 3-2 deficit after the first period. Flames starter Jonas Hiller made the initial save on a shot by Cam Fowler from the point, but Perry kicked the rebound from his skate to his stick before tucking the puck across the goal line to tie the game 3-3 at 2:15 of the second.

Vatanen gave Anaheim the lead 1:05 later with the Ducks' third power-play goal of the game.

It's the third time in three games the Flames have allowed three power play goals. Calgary's penalty k*ll is ranked 30th at 73.4 percent.

"It's really frustrating," Backlund said. "We were doing so much better after Christmas and we were trying to build on it. It's tough to have so many penalties the last two games and today and not be able to k*ll them."

Hiller was pulled after making 13 saves on 17 shots and was replaced by Joni Ortio (nine saves) in the second period.

"It seemed like every shot would bounce off skates, shin pads, and get in the net," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. "I thought I'd try to turn the game around, shake things up a little bit and get some momentum out of the change. Sometimes it works but tonight it didn't."

Rackell extended Anaheim's lead at 12:18. Perry curled deep in the Calgary zone before finding Rackell at the top of the circle, who beat Ortio with a wrist shot from 36 feet to put the Ducks up 5-3.

Hudler, with his second of the game, pulled Calgary within one with 6.5 seconds remaining in the second, swatting a rebound from Sean Monahan's wrist shot from the slot behind Andersen.

Santorelli restored the two-goal lead 51 seconds into the third with his second of the game to make it 6-4 after Ortio made the initial save off a shot from Josh Manson.

"I was fortunate," Santorelli said. "I just got the rebound. [Manson] made a great play and luckily it went over the goalie. It's always nice when you have a couple goal lead on a team. It takes off a little bit of the pressure. They still had their chances. We shut it down."

Andersen made 13 saves in the third to preserve the win.

Six Coyotes score in win Arizona has season high in goals against Canadiens

by Jerry Brown / NHL.com Correspondent

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Martin Hanzal and Oliver Ekman-Larsson each had a goal and two assists to help the Arizona Coyotes to a 6-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Gila River Arena on Monday.

Anthony Duclair had a goal and an assist, and Brad Richardson, Kevin Connauton and Antoine Vermette each scored for the Coyotes (26-24-6), who had 13 of 18 skaters get at least one point.

It was a season high for goals for the Coyotes, and their most since a 6-3 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 3, 2015.

Arizona has 58 points, two more than it had all of last season and four behind the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche for one of two wild cards into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.

Dale Weise and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal (27-26-4), which has lost two in a row following a three-game winning streak. Canadiens goalie Mike Condon made 21 saves on 27 shots.

Arizona goalie Louis Domingue made 17 saves, and the Coyotes need him to go the distance.

Down to one NHL goalie after backup Anders Lindback was injured in an off-ice activity before warmups, they went to their emergency goalie list and called Nathan Schoenfeld, the son of New York Rangers senior vice president Jim Schoenfeld, as a replacement.

The 31-year-old father got to the arena about 30 minutes before the game, signed a one-day amateur tryout contract and was on the bench for the American and Canadian national anthems.

The Coyotes got off to another quick start, and Hanzal was in the middle of things.

At 4:47, Duclair set up Michael Stone for a shot from the right point that Hanzal deflected down and past Condon to open the scoring. Hanzal's ninth goal of the season was his third in the past four games.

Montreal got the goal back less than five minutes later. Jacob De La Rose carried the puck behind the Arizona net and slipped a pass to Weise, who put the puck past Domingue at 9:02. Weise's goal was his 13th of the season but second since Dec. 28.

The Coyotes regained the lead on the power play after Montreal's David Desharnais was called for tripping Domingue behind the net. Condon made the save on Ekman-Larsson's shot from the point, but Hanzal outmuscled Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin for the puck and pushed it across the slot to Duclair, who scored into a half-open net. Duclair's 16 goals are fifth among NHL rookies.

The score stayed 2-1 until the second period, when Montreal defenseman Greg Pateryn opened a cut on Arizona rookie forward Max Domi's nose with a cross-check to the head. Pateryn was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct, but not before Domi scrambled to his feet and earned a double minor for roughing.

Each team scored a goal at 4-on-4. Richardson stuffed an Ekman-Larsson feed around and by Condon at 8:04, and Gallagher answered for Montreal 2:02 later with a long shot from outside the right circle that trickled through Domingue's pad to cut Arizona's lead to 3-2.

But 12 seconds after Domi exited the penalty box, he set up Ekman-Larsson at the top of the circles for a wrist shot through a Duclair screen that hit off the crossbar and went in at 11:52. Ekman-Larsson's 16 goals are second among NHL defensemen, trailing the 18 of Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks.

Connauton capped off the wild second period at 15:38, finishing a setup from Kyle Chipchura with a shot off the near post to make it 5-2. It was the first goal with Arizona for Connauton, who was claimed off waivers from Columbus on Jan. 13.

Vermette completed the scoring with a backhand shot off a Mikkel Boedker feed 4:19 into the third period.

I am a die hard Minnesota Wild fan, though I also like the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets; the Chicago Blackhawks is my "bandwagon" team! We've been shitting the bed for the last several weeks leading to the firing of Mike Yeo! Now they have an interim coach (John Torchetti, who until recently was the coach of the MN Wild's farm team, Iowa Wild of the AHL). They just turned it around beating the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 on a road game. It remains to be seen if this coaching change really is the catalyst needed for the Minnesota Wild to turn around!

But seriously, Minnesota and ALL the Canadian teams are struggling at the moment! What's wrong guys?! I hope you all can turn it around cuz the NHL playoffs is frankly no fun without all the genuinely hockey crazed markets participating!

Hurricanes' power play seals triumph over Jets

Jordan Staal, Riley Nash score to snap Winnipeg's road winning streak

Playing without their All-Star defenceman and starting goaltender, the Carolina Hurricanes had to rely on strong special teams to grind out a victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Jordan Staal and Riley Nash had power-play goals, and backup goalie Eddie Lack had 20 saves in a 2-1 win Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes, 8-1-3 at home since late December, are two points out of the No. 8 playoff position in the Eastern Conference. They killed off three first-period penalties and four overall against Winnipeg, which had won in each of its past five visits to Raleigh.

Carolina played its third game without All-Star defenceman Justin Faulk and their first full game without starting goalie Cam Ward. Ward left with an injury in the second period of Saturday's win over the New York Islanders, and Lack took his place in net.

Lack faced just four shots in each of the first two periods before turning away 12 of 13 as Winnipeg put on the pressure in the third.

"I thought (Lack) got better and better," Carolina coach Bill Peters said. "When you get an opportunity, you better capitalize on it, right?"

Lack, who said he was suffering from the flu, called the defence in front of him "unbelievable."

"Defensively, we have nothing to complain about right now," said Lack, who improved to 5-2 in his career against Winnipeg.

Carolina outshot Winnipeg 29-21, including 25-8 at one point early in the third period. Ondrej Pavelec made 27 saves for Winnipeg.

Blake Wheeler scored for Winnipeg with 13:08 remaining, getting credit for a deflection of Jacob Trouba's drive.

Jordan Staal gave Carolina the lead at 10:33 of the first with his 13th goal of the season. On a power play, he gathered a deflection to the left of the net and backhanded a bouncing puck over Pavelec, off the goalie's right leg and into the net.

The goal tied Staal for the team lead in points.

Nash scored on a play similar to Staal's goal, tapping in a deflection in front of Pavelec on a power play midway through the second period.

"It fell at his feet, and I tried to whack it," Nash said. "He tried to dive on it, and it opened up the five-hole."

Peters said Nash has been valuable and versatile on special teams and on a line with Jay McClement and Chris Terry.

"He's been in and out of the lineup, and now that he's in, it looks like that that line wants to stay together and give us valuable minutes," Peters said.

Elias Lindholm assisted on both goals for Carolina.

Eriksson lifts Bruins over Blue Jackets Bergeron scores in return, Marchand has seven-game goal streak ended

by Craig Merz / NHL.com Correspondent

COLUMBUS -- Loui Eriksson, in his 700th NHL game, scored 33 seconds into overtime and the Boston Bruins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday.

Eriksson scored his 20th goal this season with an easy tap-in off a pass to the side of the crease from defenseman Torey Krug.

Patrice Bergeron, the Bruins' leading scorer, returned after missing two games with a lower-body injury and defenseman Adam McQuaid returned after missing 18 games with an upper-body injury.

Bergeron scored and Brad Marchand had his seven-game goal streak ended.

Boston (31-20-6) goalie Tuukka Rask made 28 saves and his Finnish counterpart Joonas Korpisalo made 28.

Columbus (23-28-7) is 4-0-2 in its past six games.

Alexander Wennberg scored on a penalty shot, the first of his career and Columbus' first this season, at 9:54 of the first period to give the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead. He skated in, slowed down then roofed a backhander for his sixth goal this season.

Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara was forced to hook Wennberg after Scott Hartnell's pass in the neutral zone created a partial breakaway.

Rask had better fortune three minutes later when he used his blocker to deny a shorthanded breakaway by Brandon Saad.

Bergeron scored unassisted at 14:28 to tie the game at 1-1. Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones tried to chip the puck out of the zone, but Bergeron gloved it and fired a shot under the right arm of Korpisalo.

Boston plays the fifth of a season-long six-game road trip Thursday at the Nashville Predators. Columbus completes a five-game homestand Friday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Senators edge Sabres in 2-1 shootout win

41 minutes ago AP - Sports

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) -- Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris scored in the shootout and the Senators topped the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 Tuesday night, snapping Ottawa's three-game losing streak.

Ryan Dzingel scored in the first period for the Senators, and Craig Anderson made 38 saves.

Matt Moulson scored for the Sabres as Robin Lehner stopped 25 shots.

Anderson made a huge save on Sabres rookie Jack Eichel with 15 seconds remaining in overtime to force the shootout.

The Sabres were without Evander Kane as he was suspended for the game after missing practice Monday.

The Senators rewarded fans who braved poor road conditions to make it to the game by offering 50 percent off an upcoming game and a free ticket to those who were unable to attend due to the weather. Nearly 20 inches of snow fell in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Tied 1-1 after two periods, Ottawa had a strong third period, but the Senators were unable to beat Lehner and were forced to overtime.

Anderson was a key reason the game remained tied after 40 minutes as Buffalo outshot Ottawa 18-9 in the second. He made a number of big saves to keep the Senators in the game.

Ottawa gave up the first goal as Eichel made a brilliant behind the back pass to Moulson, who beat Anderson short side at 6:01 of the first.

The Senators tied the game just over a minute later as Dzingel whacked away at a rebound and got it past Lehner for his first NHL goal.

Nick Paul made his NHL debut, he was the sixth player to do so this season for Ottawa.

Shattenkirk's OT goal puts Blues past Stars 2-1

By R.B. FALLSTROM (AP Sports Writer) 43 minutes ago

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Kevin Shattenkirk scored a power-play goal at 1:11 of overtime and Brian Elliott had another strong game in net for the St. Louis Blues, who ended the Dallas Stars' four-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night.

Jaden Schwartz got the other goal for the Blues on a fluke when a dump-in bounced off referee Kelly Sutherland's ankle at 12 seconds of the second period. The Blues have won five of six against the Central Division-leading Stars, who won in overtime at Nashville on Monday.

Elliott made his 15th consecutive start, a career high, and had 17 saves. The Stars were held to a season-low for shots.

Mattias Janmark tied it late in regulation for Dallas. Janmark has scored in three straight games including the game-winner in overtime Monday.

Shattenkirk ripped a one-timer past Kari Lehtonen for the winner, his 10th of the season. Dallas was a man short after Jason Demers was whistled for interference with 14.1 seconds left in regulation.

Lehtonen scrambled back to the goal late after venturing out to field the puck behind the net on the goal by Schwartz.

Janmark tied it with 6:34 remaining on a shot from the side of the net after Valeri Nichushkin flubbed a shot that trickled between the legs of a defender and wide.

The Blues killed off four power plays in the scoreless first period, allowing just three shots. The Stars had no shots at even strength.

Dallas was strong on the penalty k*ll in the second period, thwarting 1:09 of St. Louis' two-man advantage to keep it a one-goal game.

Flyers vs. Devils recap: Third period outburst keeps Philadelphia in the playoff picture

By Travis Hughes @TravisSBN on Feb 16, 2016, 10:15p

usa-today-9119198.0.jpg

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

It was a big game in the playoff race led by a big third period.

here's something extremely fun about the Flyers playing in New Jersey, even when they lose. I think it might be that there are always something like five different raucous "Let's Go Flyers!" chants every time there's a game at Prudential Center. And it's even more fun when that's the refrain that drowns out the organ player at the end of a solid Flyers win and a dominant Flyers third period in Newark.

Look, the Flyers didn't play a perfect game tonight by any means. Often when you play against a stingy defensive team like the Devils, it's far from perfect. And when you're a team that's as offensively flawed as the Flyers, that can be an overall ugly combination. Tonight though, the Flyers hung with it ... particularly early when they needed to weather a game that was up and down and back and around, in large part thanks to some questionable officiating.

It started off though, frankly, with a lot of bullshit from Radko Gudas. I argued last week that even if the letter of the law indicated that he was innocent of a dirty hit in the Buffalo game, he still deserved a suspension because of just how reckless he was on that play. He lived up to it again tonight, taking a match penalty for an ugly elbow to the head on Bobby Farnham. That subsequent power play led to a New Jersey goal, and it sure felt like we might get another game like we had the other day in Philadelphia: a Devils-controlled, low-scoring contest.

Ahh, but then, Shayne Gostisbehere. He not only extended his point streak to thirteen games, but he scored a beautiful game-tying goal over the shoulder of Cory Schneider that made me want to go do dirty things to my sheets. (That's a ghost joke.)

Brayden Schenn gave the Flyers the lead with a power play goal midway through the second -- one that Ghost probably deserved another assist on thanks to a beautiful keep at the blue line on the play. But he didn't get one because tertiary assists are not a thing. Ah well. In any event, the Flyers entered the third period up 2-1, and the floodgates open up from there.

Jordin Tootoo opened up the scoring midway through, tying it at 2-2 (lol). And then Wayne Simmonds, and then 50 seconds later Nick Cousins. And then a deep breath. And then Kyle Palmieri kept it weird with a Devils goal, and then Ryan White kept it 100 with a Flyers goal.

All told, this turned out to be the ugliest defensive effort for the Devils all year, and the second time in four games in which the Flyers scored more than five goals. The third period explosion gave them hope that this season is still alive -- and yeah, despite a Carolina win tonight, the Flyers are only four points out of the final playoff spot in the East as of this writing.

This was a very important win in the playoff picture, and it was fun to celebrate it in our little home away from home up there Newark.

Grubauer guides Capitals past Kings Washington goalie makes 39 saves; Kuznetsov scores

Kuznetsov's go-ahead goal LAK@WSH: Kuznetsov buries go-ahead goal in 3rd

2/16/16: Evgeny Kuznetsov stuffs home the feed at the side of the net to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead late in the 3rd period

WASHINGTON -- Philipp Grubauer rebounded from a poor start last week by making 39 saves for the Washington Capitals in a 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Verizon Center on Tuesday.

"It was a transition for me this year, getting back-to-back games and maybe not seeing as many pucks," Grubauer said. "I need to develop some consistency in my game and that was a good start."

The 24-year-old hadn't started since a 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Feb. 2. He last played Saturday after Braden Holtby was pulled after two periods in a 4-3 loss at the Dallas Stars.

"[Grubauer] has been good all year," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "I don't have any doubts with what he could do and that's why he got this game."

Forwards Andre Burakovsky, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals (41-10-4), who have not lost consecutive games in regulation this season.

"I thought gradually, throughout the game, we got better, because we had to," Capitals forward Justin Williams said. "They got the better of the play. They were outshooting us, outplaying us, outbattling us. Slowly, in the third period, we started to take things over, and things started to move a bit in our direction. You know, we said it on the bench: We were getting stronger and they were fading a bit."

Forward Anze Kopitar scored a shorthanded goal, and Jonathan Quick made 29 saves for the Kings in his return from a lower-body injury that caused him to miss three games. Los Angeles (33-20-3) is 2-3-0 on its seven-game road trip.

"The goalies made some big saves," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "We couldn't get that second one. But we had lots of good opportunities. The last five minutes you were just trusting the guys that you have on the ice, and we probably got caught with some inexperience on the back end on that last goal."

Kopitar scored at 16:43 of the first period to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. He skated from the blue line and scored a sharp-angle goal on Grubauer's stick side.

"This is a group that's been together for a long time and knows how to win," Kings captain Dustin Brown said. "We've got to bear down on our chances. That's the difference tonight. We had some really good looks, and they've got to go in the back of the net for us, especially when we have a 1-0 goal. If we can find a way to get that next goal, that game is probably a lot different. They kind of poured it on in the third and as a result they got the goals they needed."

Burakovsky tied it 1-1 with 49 seconds remaining in the second period when he deflected defenseman Dmitry Orlov's pass for his 12th of the season. Burakovsky has 16 points in his past 14 games and a point in 12 of his past 14.

"I was just trying to crash the net and obviously it was a sick pass from Orlov and he just hit my stick," Burakovsky said. "The only thing I had to do was hold my stick on the ice."

Kuznetsov scored with 2:02 remaining in the third period to make it 2-1. Williams sent a behind-the-net pass to him at the goal mouth for his 16th goal of the season and first since Jan. 14.

"If you listen to Justin on the bench, what he says to his linemates and the guys on the bench, he finds a way to pull people into the fight and he does it by example," Trotz said. "He finds a way to get things done and that's his talent."

Chimera made it 3-1 with an empty-net goal with 8.6 seconds remaining.

Kopitar's shorthanded goal LAK@WSH: Doughty's defense leads to shorthanded goal

"We're in the situation where we need to find points," Brown said. "There's definitely areas we can improve on, so that's something we need to focus on in practice tomorrow is those things. They're not huge adjustments we need to make, but it's the little things this time of year that are hugely important."

Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik played his first game since Nov. 10. He missed 40 games with a lower-body injury. Orpik had a secondary assist on Burakovsky's second-period goal; he has four points this season.

"Past the first couple of shifts, it was just getting used to the speed again," Oprik said. "It was pretty good. Obviously, a really good opponent to come back against, so that wasn't easy, but it's good."

TAMPA, Fla. -- Matt Nieto scored the game-winner 1:17 into the third period as the Sharks started their five-game trip Tuesday with a 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

Nieto's eighth goal of the season came in transition as Joel Ward fed Patrick Marleau, who took the puck into the Lightning zone on a 2 on 1. He fed a cross-ice pass to Nieto, who deked goalie Ben Bishop to give the Sharks the one-goal lead.

Melker Karlsson scored with 1:43 left in the third period to ice the game, as the Sharks momentarily moved back into second place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of Anaheim. The Ducks were playing Edmonton on Tuesday night.

Joe Thornton had two assists to continue his torrid scoring pace, as he assisted on Karlsson's goal and one by Joe Pavelski in the second period. Thornton now has 50 points and at least one point in 24 of his past 26 games.

Goalie Martin Jones took care of the rest, finishing with 27 saves — including eight in the third period.

The Sharks got even strength goals from Ward and Pavelski within a span of 4:51 in the second period to take a 2-1 lead.

Ward took a pass from Marc-Edouard Vlasic and his shot from above the circles got through a partial screen from Marleau and past Bishop to tie the game 1-1 just 1:43 into the second. It was Vlasic's eighth straight game with an assist, tying a franchise record held by Brent Burns.

2/16/16: On the rush, Rickard Rakell finds Hampus Lindholm who tips it past Cam Talbot, giving the Ducks a 3-2 lead in the 3rd period

EDMONTON -- Hampus Lindholm scored the first of three goals in the third period to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 5-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Tuesday.

David Perron, Jakob Silfverberg, Andrew Cogliano and Corey Perry had goals for Anaheim (29-19-8), which moved within three points of the Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division. Frederik Andersen made 24 saves for the Ducks, who are 17-4-2 in their past 23 games.

Anaheim is 4-1-1 on its seven-game road trip, which concludes Thursday at the Vancouver Canucks.

Leon Draisaitl, Taylor Hall and Benoit Pouliot scored for Edmonton (22-30-6), which has lost five of its past six games. Cam Talbot made 25 saves.

Cogliano scored an empty-net goal with 1:31 left to put Anaheim up 4-2. He intercepted a pass at the Ducks blue line and sent a shot down the ice into an empty net.

But Pouliot scored with 24 seconds later, getting credit for a goal that bounced in off the head of Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler and past Andersen.

Perry scored an empty-net goal with 13 seconds left.

Perron's power-play goal gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead with 51.7 seconds remaining in the first period. The former Oilers forward was stopped by Talbot in front, but dove at the rebound and was able to force the puck into the net.

The goal was reviewed twice, once to determine whether Perron kicked the puck in, and the other on a coach's challenge for goaltender interference. But the goal stood.

Edmonton tied the game 1-1 on the power play at 2:16 of the second period. Draisaitl took a pass from Lauri Korpikoski, got a step on Ducks defenseman Kevin Bieksa on a rush down the wing and sent a low shot past Andersen.

Silfverberg put Anaheim up 2-1 at 14:54 of the second when he took a pass from Ryan Kesler and beat Talbot with a shot over the shoulder.

Hall's goal ties it up
ANA@EDM: Hall puts home rebound chance to tie game
Hall tied the game at 16:29 with his first goal in 11 games. He was first to a rebound on a shot from Jordan Eberle and poked the puck past Andersen.

The Oilers were forced to play the final two periods with five defenseman; Eric Gryba left the game because of a lower-body injury.

Lindholm gave the Ducks at 3-2 lead at 5:35 of the third period, converting an excellent passing play with Rickard Rakell. Lindholm gained the zone with Rakell, sent a pass to the latter, then tipped the return feed past Talbot.

Thanks Guns for starting this thread! It gives Manila Tonight users who are hockey fans a place to talk/rant about the game! To be honest, I think hockey could easily be a top 5 sport in the Philippines in terms of popularity if we weren't located in the tropics but at the latitude of Korea/Japan/northern China. It's got a lot of things Filipinos want in a sport - physicality, skill, drama, more scoring than most football/soccer games, and there's the fact you don't have to be freakishly tall to do well in it (a lot of our basketball players are of NHL height). :)

I can't wait to see how the race to the NHL playoffs is gonna pan out! Go Wild Go! And hopefully the northern teams make a strong push to a playoff spot!

Panarin completes hat trick
CHI@NYR: Panarin scores empty-netter for 3rd goal

2/17/16: Artemi Panarin speeds down the ice and smacks in the puck on an empty net to collect his third goal and complete a hat trick

NEW YORK -- Artemi Panarin had his first NHL hat trick, including the game-winning goal with 3:00 remaining in the third period, to help the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-3 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

Andrew Shaw erased a one-goal deficit earlier in the third period and Andrew Desjardins had a first-period goal for Chicago (38-18-5), which faces the Minnesota Wild at TCF Bank Stadium on Sunday as part of the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. Corey Crawford made 31 saves.

Kevin Hayes, Derick Brassard and Dan Boyle scored for New York (32-19-6), which lost in regulation at home for the first time since Dec. 20. Henrik Lundqvist made 15 saves.

Chicago opened the scoring 3:30 into the game. Desjardins outmuscled Boyle in front of the net and redirected Teuvo Teravainen's feed from the right corner past Lundqvist to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.

Panarin's go-ahead goal
CHI@NYR: Panarin gives Blackhawks the lead in the 3rd

The Rangers thought they tied the game at 1:52 of the second period when defenseman Dan Girardi beat Crawford with a slap shot from the right point. But Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville challenged that Crawford was interfered with, and replays concluded forward Chris Kreider made contact with the Blackhawks goaltender.

Panarin extended Chicago's lead with a power-play goal at 10:05 of the second. After Kreider took an offensive-zone holding penalty, Panarin took a pass from Erik Gustafsson and beat a screened Lundqvist with a wrist shot from the left circle to make it 2-0. It was Panarin's 20th goal of the season.

Hayes got the Rangers on the board with his 10th goal of the season at 13:45 of the second period. New York capitalized after Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival failed to clear the puck out of the zone, and Oscar Lindberg sent a pass in front to Hayes, who one-timed it past Crawford to make it 2-1. Hayes has three goals in his past four games.

Lundqvist kept it a one-goal game with under five minutes left in the second period, denying Teravainen's wrist shot from the left circle and Brandon Mashinter's rebound chance on the doorstep during a 2-on-0.

New York received a four-minute power play when Blackhawks forward Vincent Hinostroza got his stick up in the face of Rangers center Dominic Moore at 19:34 of the second period.

Shaw knots things up in the 3rd
CHI@NYR: Shaw scores on power play to tie the game
The Rangers converted on the power play when Brassard scored his 20th goal of the season 24 seconds into the third period. Brassard took a pass from Keith Yandle and let go a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Crawford under the crossbar to make it 2-2.

Boyle then gave New York its first lead of the game at 2:17. Hayes sent a pass from behind the net in front to Boyle, who failed to stuff it past Crawford on his first attempt but jammed the rebound over the goal line. It was Boyle's first goal since Dec. 30, a span of 18 games.

Shaw tied it with a power-play goal at 9:53 of the third. After Rangers forward Viktor Stalberg was whistled for holding, Shaw put Teravainen's cross-ice feed past Lundqvist to make it 3-3.

Panarin put the Blackhawks back in front at 17:00 with a power-play goal. With Yandle in the box for holding, Panarin one-timed Patrick Kane's feed from behind the net past Lundqvist to give Chicago a 4-3 lead. He completed the hat trick with 1:11 left with an empty-net goal.

Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh returned to the lineup after missing the previous four games because of a concussion. Defenseman Marc Staal did not play; the Rangers announced during the game that his wife delivered their second child, a daughter.

New York visits the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.
