Went to La Luz in Laiya last September... one of the better budget-friendly resorts in Batangas. It's quiet, cozy, plenty of trees, cabanas by the beach a nice touch. Only downside is you can't cook your own food. There's a breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet, there's no menu to select from. What they serve is what you get. Food is okay, nothing spectacular. If you're not picky about food then I recommend this resort.

yes it was nice i recommend that resort because it's really cozy and quiet. like i said food lang ang talo kasi you can't cook your own food or even choose what you want to eat. i'm not sure about the cost, it was a company outing kasi but i think it was less than 1,500/head overnight kasama na buffet lunch, snack, dinner and breakfast.

finally been to laiya, san juan, batangas, specifically to coco grove resort.

with instructions from the resort's website at hand, getting there was fairly easy if tiring. it is a 140km or so drive from q.c. where i'm from and age hasn't been kind to my body. the actual drive though was smooth except for the part where you have to pass through lipa city proper where horrendous traffic has been exported to from the metro.

as the name may imply, there are a number of coconut trees around the resort. it's main building, which houses the restaurant and business office, is built with several coconut trees acting as its support. while the other structures- the guest rooms, aren't built with or around coconuts, they still are built with indigenous materials that give the resort a simple, rustic feel that calms the senses.

 

there are three types of accommodations.

the first one is the tree house and there are 10 of them scattered along a section of the expansive resort right beside the inner border of the beach. they accommodate 4-10 persons, depending on how many rooms are available in the tree house. a single room variety, good for my family of 4 is what i reserved for our stay, hoping to impress my 8 year old son. he wasn't. not when a pool, the sea and a host of other activities beckon (more on those later).

don't be fooled by it's designation, the tree houses available here are of the modern type, complete with a toilet and bath. however, as with the robinson's family variety, these tree houses are susceptible to swaying when a moderate breeze heads it's way, giving the sensation that a mild earthquake just hit a high rise. it isn't that bad though and you get used to it fairly quickly.

 

if there's a minor drawback, it's got to be the absence of a tv. and this is par for all the rooms. i know what you're thinking- with so much nature to explore, who needs a tv, right? well, when it's 10:00 pm and you'd had your fill of karaoke and you're still not sleepy, a good show will help you ease to sleep. especially when a family of noisy mice has made the wall beside your bed it's home and they still decide to squeak away till midnight.

 

 

the second and third types of accommodations are completely land based.

the pool-side cottages are scattered around the resort's lone swimming pool (obviously). they cater to different sized families just like the tree houses. however, if your family is like that of john and kate plus eight and then some, or if you plan to come here with your classmates- all 20 of them, then the bahay kubo is the one for you.

 

what made me choose this resort over the others available in laiya (and there are quite a number to choose from) is the number of activities that you can engage in here. besides the swimming that could be had in the pool and the beach, and the other beach-based activities you'd come to expect from beach resorts (kayaking, jet-skiing, snorkelling via a short 800 peso pump boat ride, etc.), one may also try out their trampoline (my kid's favorite so much so that he wants a trampoline for christmas), zip line and horse-back riding (the latter i did not personally see but just read about). and it is good as well that they offered these activities because frankly, the pool's water is a bit murky (i tried taking underwater pictures but just produced silhouettes of the person i'm taking the pic of) and the ocean floor of the beach is malumot, both not thoroughly enticing for a swim.

but who goes to a beach and not swim in the ocean? to answer this, the resort fully aware of their own beaches' shortcoming, offers to transport you approximately 800 meters down the beach to another property they own- coco grove extension. this is located in the strip of laiya beach they nicknamed white beach. while the sand in this beach is not as white as to warrant it's nickname, the water here is significantly better and thus much more swimmable. this is also where the zip line is located- a must try if you are under 155 lbs- their weight limit (i'm not).

 

the meals served is always a buffet of rice, a selection of 3 viands (vegetable, fish, and meat), and desert and comes with a glass of iced tea. i was ready to dismiss the food after my first day here where the lunch and dinner that i had was just plain but not bad filipino fare. however, they next day saw an interesting, middle eastern inspired lunch of a couscous like rice, curried calamari, spiced beef with garbanzos which followed a filling breakfast. so i am now of the opinion that the 2.7k paid per person for an overnight tree house accommodation and food for 4 meals (lunch-dinner-bkfast-lunch) is sulit.

9/10 overall experience. Been there several times, great place to go with someone special, place is really

romantic, the infinity pool is just awesome during night time dips with the moonlight.

 

A lot of places for quality time, service and the food are excellent. They cleaned out the beach area to

have a safe place to swim without getting caught on rocks/coral as well as getting pulled by the

undertow. Hotel can provide the transportation to and from the hotel. Lots of activities to do both on land,

in bed, and in the water.

 

The only downsides now is availability, the guests from Vivere Hotel usually take first pick, the price

is fairly expensive but I would definitely say worth the cost for a large majority of the people.

 

I can swear that even the toughest nut of a bitch will sway with you because of the romantic ambiance

of the location.

anilao, batangas isn't ideal for swimming for me. it's more of diving/snorkeling place.

i've stayed in eagle point resort in mabini, near anilao. long drive from manila but it was fun there. make sure to take a boat to sepoc island.

laiya is more suitable for families and couples who just want to lounge around, check out coco grove resort.

 

outside food and drinks weren't allowed in these places. we had to buy everything from them. nagtakas lang kami ng cooler for booze.
