  1. ALWAYS EXPECT TO GET BRUISED, CUT, ETC... when you study any form

of martial art or self-defense system...it would give you a feeling of reality

or a semblance to actual combat which is what most prepare for...Otherwise,

just take up thai bo or aerokickboxing... BAHALA NA IF IT WORK IN A SELF-DEFENSE

SITUATION OR NOT... you can't learn to swim if you don't expect to get wet...

  2. interested in arnis? try looking up the Filipino Martial Arts thread sa SPORTS section...

Natabunan na ata coz of little interest in the native arts...page 2 or 3..

  3. Question lang po.... where does one go for women's self-defense?..... Hindi po

yung pa-cute lang like something you put in your resume under hobbies....that

gives women a false sense of security....something simple yet effective....HINDI

PO YUNG PARANG ONE-STEP SPARRING GAYA NG MARAMI.... which are more

concern with techniques than attributes (timing, speed, etc.) SOME INFO

    PLEASE!

  4. Request lang po.... a picture of Manila Ice Plant (tama ba yung name nun?) which

was the first ice plant in Asia which once stood opposite Metropolitan Theater in

Plaza Lawton... survived World War II but not LRT beautification program....demolished

late 70's early 80's can't remember exactly...All that remains now.... isang bodega na

left unattended...should have been preserved by the National Historic commission...

Pag baba ng Quezon Bridge galing Quiapo...turn right dun sana yun..Think of what

someone's edifice complex could ruin...and erase from memory..REQUEST FOR LANG!

  5. dreamstormer, maraming arnis clubs dyan sa tabi-tabi, but be sure their authentic. If you do want learn in earnest try going to Cebu. Dyan maraning stylo ng arnis from you to choose from. Dito sa Manila, try inquiring sa Rapid Journal publication to refer you to some of them.

  6. info lang po. anybody offer courses in self-defense CQC in conjunction with combat shooting? Just completed a course in basic combat shooting in Taguig but I found this very much wanting as to the one my relative took in the US sa GUNsite wherein package deal. wherein lahat ng conceivable scenario in a violent encounter is taken into account. Anyone offer a similar course here?

  7. two nights ago I was accosted by three men (dalawang payat and one robust guy) while opening the door of my car somewhere near Camelot Hotel (mother ignacia). Mga 5'6" ang payat at 5'8" si taba. They started shoving me, pero they did not ask for any money, and or the keys to my car. I use a Swiss army knife as a key chain holder and was able to open the reamer. The next guy that shoved me, (si taba) I drove the reamer in his arm and push him towards the two other guys. When they stumbled down I started kicking their faces and when they tried to cover their faces, I ran towards the Tropical hut fastfood. and luckily they did not give chase. Swerte pa ako, had they been armed baka I might have gotten wounded or worse. I usually carry a defensive folder or balisong but dahil sa dami ng checkpoints ngayon hindi na. My question is what is legality of carrying defensive knives in the Phils.? My last swiss army was deemed a weapon sa checkpoint at inarbor ng pulis, then they let me go. Knives are the only option nowadays (guns, maraming restrictions tear gas wa effect pag multiple assailants cane cumbersome to carry)

  8. anyone in the know. I read in the Rapid journal mag that Elmer Ybanez. one of the foremost exponent of Lightning Scientific Arnis died. I am just curious on how this came about. Kasi he is relativey young to die at such an age. Is it due to a disease? I do hope it was not of tragic circumtances, like those that have befallen other martial artists. Any way, condolences to his family.

  9. dude as far as i know... wala yatang krav maga school dito sa pinas eh, it originates in israel by d way...

the joker, obviously krav maga originated from Israel. what i was trying to imply was if there is a school here., considering that filipinos are very fond of catching new trends, fads specifically foreign. For instance BJJ, promoters of the grappling craze that swept most of the world, has its minions here. I was hoping that krav maga as well as other combatives which drew enormous interest after 9/11 have somehow had a foothold here. These are just for clarifications no malice intented.

  10. Hello everyone,

This is a bit off-topic but I was wondering if any of our members here at MTC can provide us with information of a possible location where we can teach and practice Arnis. For the past few days, we've been receiving inquiries on people that are interested in learning Arnis. The problem is, currently we are practicing it at a location that is not convienient for a lot of people (Morayta). If there's anybody who might know of a location preferably Makati, Pasay or Manila (Taft Ave. area), that would be really helpful. The place doesn't have to be exclusively for us, we could share space from existing gyms. And if we can get a space thats right for us, we can offer other stuff like tai chi and womens self defense because our teacher is also knowledgabe in those as well.

Just PM me on details and thank you for this chance in air this appeal.......

Sana pati hours of training flexible din Morning sessions. Kasi gabi lang ang classes niyo. The locations try affiliating yourselves with some schools. The La salle Doce pares, Sa UP Lightning scientific. They would be very glad to accommodate you. I'll try lookin into it, and ask mga alumni ng reputable schools sa taft area.

  11. y is it that when u guys talk bout the martial arts, meron tlagang arguments o discussions?y cant we just get along?

momond hindi argument healthy discussion lang. Depending on the your martial art your practicing. You are predispose to resolve things depending on your training. An exchange of views helps arrive at the most efficient way. We try to make it civil. Dati they resolve things by a sort of trial by combat, literally coming to blows. A synthesis of different styles (most martial arts are ecletic combination of different styles) is what is aimed at.

  12. Sorry for the late response. It took a while to browse through the thread since they've merged it.

Just out of curiostiy, I was wondering where you got your impression that these arts were less lethal when it came to stick combat. My impression, and this is only my impression, has been the opposite. Pekiti may be blade oriented, but most of the Dog Brothers are pekiti practitioners, including all of their top fighters. Who hits harder with a stick than these guys? They torque their body as far as they can for each strike so that they can deliver their full body weight. Something that may help the power of a stick strike but may be redundant for using a sharp blade. From what I've seen of kali deleon, like almost all arnis styles, the stick "respresents" the blade, but it is definitely still a stick. The bring their sticks back all the way, sometimes under their arm which is something you wouldn't do with a blade. The few times they've entered international stick fighting competitions they always come away with a number of championships in the sparring competition.

topher kung saan tatama would be a definition of lethality. Pero, why can you get away with carrying a stick even at night, and not a knife or shall we say a bolo, and not get accosted by the cops? coz it is far easy to k*ll with a blade than a stick less movement, less power. Even Eric knaus or what's his name forgot of the dogbrothers would still be far cautious if he were to face a younger tatang illustrisimo who is well adapt with a blade. even with the size power difference (knaus is 6'4''-6'5'' almost 200lbs) tatang would be around 150-the most 5'6"-5'9" pero kabado si knaus dyan becaus e of the laters reputation as aproven blade combatant. Why do warriors of ancient prefer world carry bladed weapons instead of clubs?. Power would definitely be a plus in combat but when face with someone with finese skills of utter refinement talo ang power. Anyway it is easy to learn power strokes a la dogbrothers it take years to move the way the old masters do. you'll probably face someone na dadaanin sa lakas than sa diskarte. If you're unlucky enough to face the later, say your prayers.

  13. thanks novice for the info. maybe something eye-opening needs to happen for my friends to learn to think the way you do. The key word is instinctive reaction to thwart a violent situation. With training, everything becomes instinctive.

  14. I saw in Gameplan a couple of years ago, a group that teaches self-defense class for females, but I can't remember the groups name. What I can suggest is reality-based fighting like what you've mentioned i.e. Krav Maga. Filipino Martial Arts is very useful in self-defense situations, because it will teach you both empty-handed and weapons based fighting. Guns and knives are fair game especially in a life or death situation, but for practical and financial purposes there are a lot of knives that are available in the market that can be used in self-defense scenarios. It's okay to carry a knife for self-defense purposes just as long as it does not exceed 2.5 or is it 3.5 inches in length. Feel free to PM me if you need help in finding martial arts instructors for your friends.

novice, i watched the episode you were refering to in gameplan pero it was ecletic, halo-halo, and did not account the fact that your assailant(s) may attack a woman as he would a man,. which would involve fully power swings and straights, kicks etc. instead of grabes, bearhugs and the like. guns are best pero may legal ramifications, and knives well my swiss army knife was treated as a weapon by the police and naglagay pa ako para lang maka-settle. (the law on defensive knife is very vague in the phils.) kaya all you have are your hands, feet, etc. ( canes and sticks are cumbersome) to fight with. anyway thanks . I'll tell my female friends about FMA, pero i doubt if they will try. May pagka J.Lo (as in the movie ENOUGH) ang type nila.

  15. krav maga? american combatives? where could i go to get some training. i think learning these styles are best for today's world. MY FEMALE FRIENDS GOT A TASTE OF STREET VIOLENCE LAST WEEK IN LIBIS WHILE CLUBBING. SOME GUYS THOUGHT THEY WERE FAIR GAME AND TRIED TO FORCE THEM INTO THEIR VAN. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR SOME BYSTANDERS, WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPEN. SO MY FRIENDS ARE ASKING WHERE THEY COULD GET SOME AUTHENTIC TRAINING. GUNS AAND KNIVES ARE TOO LETHAL AND CAUSE LEGAL PREDICAMENTS. PLEASE HELP ME OUT FOR MY FRIENDS SAKE.

  16. which swordfighting style is best considering all combatants are of equal attributes?Japanese, chinese, southeast asian or western (fencing european)? knife fighting styles? which has great application even in these days of firearms. SOME INFO PLEASE

  17. fahfrd sorry bro, by referal lang nakilala ko ang aking teacher. you should try ymca makati ask around. you might get lucky someone refers you to somebody who knows somebody. talagang mahirap makatagpo ng good teacher who is willing to take you in as a student.....it took me 2 to 3 years just to gain their trust.
