  1. calling you SIR... it's a generation thing...to show that you deserve respect...please don't take

any offense...i know in today's cynical world SIR... may seem that I'm patronizing you...

YUNG TIPONG BINOBOLA KITA... to get to your good side...NO MALICE INTENDED...

anyway... thanks for the info... at least i know now that burmese boxing is far more brutal

than muay thai... ( consider the rope wrappings... as oppose to boxing gloves...)

    thanks again leloup...

  2. There's an MAP chapter in Paranaque and Alabang. I'll check with my team mates regarding the details. If you work in Makati, there are classes in Red Corner Intercon Hotel, but their level of training is for beginners, you might get bored. You can spar with the instructors, though.

I don't know in other gyms, but most of the training we do at MAP are for competition/fighting in the ring. And there's a big difference between ring fighting and street fighting.

Wai Kru is a ceremony giving honor to the teacher and to the school. YOu are referring to Krabi Krabong, the sword art of Thailand. If you want to learn how to defend against knives, sticks, etc. our very own Kali/Arnis is very effective, might even be more effective than Krabi Krabong. The common misconception is that when you don't have any stick, Kali/Arnis is useless. But the techniques of these art can be applied in empty hand and can be effective against weapons.

tnx for again for the correction... I remember sir leloup you did say tha wai kru was ceremonial...

I recently read in a back issue of Inside Kung fu/ or was it Blackbelt???... in which bando...had some animal

forms... similar to kungfu...and had weapons like the kukris.. stick... long pole... etc. It didn't even remotely

resemble muay thai... as you said in a past post...burmese/bando similar to muay thai??? I am

confused....maybe bando is not burmese but nepalese ... Some clarifications would be greatly

    appreciated... Thanks...

Anyway... going back to the topic... Would muay thai find self-defense applications ONLY

in unarmed combat??? yes it is quite effective but against knives... clubs and such???

I recently read about bando.. a burmese art similar to muay thai..but it's training encompases

weapons...wasn't muay thai derive from wai kru.. or some ancient art using swords etc...???

IF JUST FOR DISCUSSION... SIR PLAKAT...SOME INFO... TNX...

  4. last night i had a spooky experience that gave me goosebumps all over... I normally use/carry

two cellphone... Manyakis that I am... I went to my favorite club along Quezon Ave...

After using one cellphone to txt an FM ... to ask about a particular girl/'regular'...

I check my other cellphone to find out if there were any messages or calls...

and lo and behold... in the create message menu was a reply...

I didn't keyed in that message and nobody in the club circuit knew the cell# pang-trabaho

lang yung cellphone na yun!!!...I had not drank anything yet... and if someone did sent

the txt... it should be in the Inbox menu...right???? the cellphone was in my pocket... no one could have

used it...VERY EERIE INDEED..... decided to all it a night... 8pm pa lang yun!!! lost interest...

HAVE YOU HAD ANY SIMILAR EXPERIENCE???? HOW COULD IT BE RATIONALLY EXPLAINED???

  5. thanks for the tip leloup... at least there's one celeb who's really into training not

just for kicks... that she really likes to...learn wholeheartedly...Oyo boy is really a lucky guy...

Anyway...Angel Locsin being a girl that she is...IS THERE A SEPARATE TRAINING REGIMENT

FOR WOMEN IN MUAY THAI...CONSIDERING THAT THEIR BODY PHYSIQUE IS DIFFERENT???

    CAN THEY INDURE THE SAME....???

  6. Angel locsin??? where???? one thing about her is she's very athlethic... ( think she was a varsity

swimmer at UST... i might be wrong)...What appeals to many... the obvious being her hot looks...

is her being without pretentions....HINDI PA INGLISERA!!! at 'cowboy' sila... so roughing up in a sport

like muay thai fits her to a T...

  7. Not really. Phalanxes assume a large mass of fighters on each side, with ranks 3 or more men deep and around 10 or more men wide. Not only that, it assumes very specific weapons like shields that more or less cover your whole body. For the modern setting, fighting like "barbarians" would be better. This means high skill with your weapon (fists pipe or whatnot) and a lot of spacial awareness ("feeling" where your opponents and allies are with respact to where you are). No other way to learn this thatn to practice I guess. Anybody who has better suggestion would be welcome.

Spatial awareness....but it would be like taking on several opponents at one time .... fighting AS A UNIT

would make up for whatever lack of skills an individual may have....Like the pikemen of the middle ages...

As applied to modern setting...let's say unarmed combat...AN EXAMPLE: a punch or kick could easily be

blocked or grabbed by one person...or might even be 'absorbed'... while his friend could deliver a counterattack,

almost simultaneously...the attacker would be dealing with a "unit"...he may hit one person.... but his companion

would be unhurt launch a counterattack...CAN ANYONE SUGGEST SOME BOOKS ON FIGHTING EN MASS ?.....

THIS IS ONE TOPIC THAT SEEMS TO ESCAPE MARTIAL ARTS IN GENERAL.... Thanks for any info!!!...

  8. thanks for the info hellspawn...the reason I asked in the first place was that most...

street brawls almost never involve singular combat...it's either one against mutliple

opponents... one group of lesser numbers against othe group of superior count...maybe to

makeup for lack of fighting skills .....What I notice distinctively is most 'combatants'

'crowd' their adversaries... make them bump into each other...just like in street riots...

the way the police does it to disperse or control a unruly mob...YUNG AWAY BATA... STONE

THROWING, etc... A LOT OF RUNNING BACK AND FORTH... may prove effective against a less

organized group....but against a group that moves in unison....it would be to no avail...

  9. so if ever something goes wrong sa MTC 4th anniversary gig... SANA WALA NAMAN

PO UNTOWARD INCIDENT!!! it's hand to hand...sa loob ng bar...Huwag nalang mg pasiklaban

at mag yabangan... ng hindi magkasubukan...HEALTHY DISCUSSION LANG... no art is better than

the other.. depende sa tao yan....IF EVEN A HEATED ARGUMENT OCCURS, LET COOLER HEADS INTERCEDE

AND DE-ESCALATE A POTENTIALLY VIOLENT CONFRONTATION!!! PEACE TO ALL!!! LET'S ENJOY THE PARTY!!

  10. what are the tactics and strategies for group fighting?? Not one individual against

multiple opponents... but one group against another group... would the rules

of 'closing ranks' or the phalanx, etc. apply to modern setting?

  11. sir malevoque... try niyo sa Filipino Martial Arts... sa Sports section...and yes,

nagtuturo po siya sa Pinas....GM Yuli Romo is well-respected within the Filipino

    martial arts community...

  12. capoeira seem to be the fad in martial arts today...applied in

combat...practitioners i've talked to... seem to agree that all

whirling, somersaults, and other dance-like movements are seldom

what they appear to be.... most are perfectly-timed counterattacks...

devoid of the otherwise flashy moves we attribute capoeira to be...

AND THERE LIES THE ARTS' DECEPTION AND DEADLY EFFECTIVITY...

  13. Just asking... many's (did i get the name right??) gym and Martial arts center...

just after Harvard KTV in cubao...near 15th ave...which offers YAW YAN...

    is it authentic Yaw yan???

  14. marami pa po naniniwala kaya lang... most haven't got the time go into it...

they always reason...' EH ANONG GAGAWIN MO PAG MAY BARIL KALABAN MO??

o KAYA... PAANO PAG MARAMI KALABAN MO KUYUGIN KA???? MIGHT AS WELL

BUY A GUN FOR SELF-PROTECTION and forego the training required for hand2hand

combat of any discipline or style... while it is true that it's close to impossible to defend

against multiple opponents or someone who REALLY knows how to handle a gun...

WOULD YOU JUST STAND THERE AND TAKE THE BEATING AND GET SHOT AT???...

IT'S INSTINCTIVE to fight back, LUMABAN KA... YOU MIGHT GET LUCKY... AND GET OUT

ALIVE... MARTIAL ARTS WOULD GIVE YOU A FIGHTING CHANCE... AN EDGE SO TO SPEAK!!

  15. corkscrew and hellspawn, modesty aside... are both well-informed....

with regards to CHI... I have time and again witness it's existence...

Seen guys able to stand full-power groin kick without any damage...

strikes to vital organs...palm slaps that could break a brick but

leave another brick on top of it unbroken...Yet when a pro boxer

suddenly threw a punch, they weren't able to use CHI and got knockout..

MAYBE CHI IS A CONSCIOUS THING.... THAT IT HAS TO BE DRAWN

UPON TO WORK... THIS IS A QUANDARY ....

With regards to knife fighting... Filipinos are thought to be one of the best

the world over.... I read in the p[ast issue of Rapid Journal that the

PIPER KNIFE FIGHTING system... is arguably the best... since it combines

African and Malay system....ANY INFO PLS...I'M REALLY INTERESTED IN

    KNIFE FIGHTING...TNX

  16. cockscrew... the question asked was properly answered... but I re read the book... the passage

about the 'best' boxer as being neither soft or hard....it seems the author wasn't refering to

styles but rather techniques... or fighting strategies or tactics that regardless of style...each

DO have 'soft and hard' .....

  17. corkscrew and hellspawn.... you are both well-verse in Chinese martial arts..

both external and internal...I READ SOMEWHERE...AN OLD 1960's book on

shaolin kung fu... that the best 'boxer' (a misnomer...a reference to all practioners

of the chinese martial arts....) is one who BLENDS both soft and hard styles...

which maybe both striking and grappling arts... external or internal arts...

How can, for example... Hung Gar... an external style be "blended' with shall

we say... tai chi or hsing i or bagua...internal style...???

  18. tnx for the info corkscrew.... but I read somewhere that the internal style

bagua zhang ( correct spelling ba? ) is both suitable for frail as well as

stocky body built....and aikido is best suited for lean....

  19. caution when learning brazilian Jujitsu....most techniques are for sports combat..

As what my brazilian jujitsu instructor told me....be careful of groin grabs, pinches

eye gourges, etc. things that are illegal in UFC... but not in the street...STILL BRAZILIAN

JUJITSU IS ONE OF THE BEST GROUND FIGHTING ARTS AROUND...JUST HAVE TO MODIFY

    CERTAIN TECHNIQUES FOR THE STREET..

DO NOT HAVE THE FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY THAT A WOMAN CAN STAND TOE TO TOE WITH

A MAN... NO MATTER HOW WELL TRAIN SHE IS...THE BEST TACTIC FOR HER IS TO STUN AND

ESCAPE...AVOID GRAPPLING...SHE CAN ONLY RESTRAINT HIM FOR SO LONG....STAMINA AND POWER

WOULD TURN THE TIDE IN HIS FAVOR...IF POSSIBLE, BREAK THE BONE THEN RUN!!!
