Technical schools as an option to formal "liberal arts" education will work only if you have a local or regional economy that will accommodate you. As a kid in the '70s, the Philippines was a modestly industrialized country. We used to go on field trips to factories within the metro and OH, you had shoe factories, candy factories, factories for soap, textile and garment factories, various kinds of metal works, even electronics  factories. Well, all of those have moved out of the metro or simply died out. Broadly, a fresh graduate's option now is either the local service-utilities field or seek employment abroad. For either option, a bachelor's degree is the best bet.

Comrade from purely local the job marketplace is now global. Best to target emerging fields ( like fintech ) and choose the corresponding college courses that may at best give you an adequate grounding in your potential career. There are also internationally accepted certificates that you may want to aim  for and acquire to augment your cv.

For those about to graduate dont go for any job ( like call centre) simply because its there.

  2. Still waiting for your cabinet announcement . This will REALLY show if you're serious about :

    1) Helping the country burdened by historic debt and rising inflation

    2) Leading the country by choosing qualified , experienced and respected authorities in their field

    3) Simply go the "bayad utang" route ( Sara Duterte as DEP Ed sec ? wtf . Her publicist says her qualification as a mother deeply concerned with the education of her kids simply won't wash )

    From Yahoo's Marvin Joseph Ang  23 Mat 2022 :

President-elect Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. is entrusting the education portfolio, a government agency beset by numerous challenges, to his running mate and Vice President-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio when their term begins.

The Philippines, even before the pandemic, has long been in crisis. Despite having the biggest chunk of the annual budget, classrooms are still lacking, the infrastructure needed to cater to a good educational environment is moving crazy slow, and teachers don’t get paid adequately with the kind of workload that is given to them.

But in 2016, many welcomed the appointment of Leonor Briones as Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd). Briones, a professor emeritus of the University of the Philippines Diliman’s National College of Public Administration and Governance, and lead convenor of watchdog group Social Watch Philippines, is an expert on governance and budget, and the former National Treasurer under Former President Joseph Estrada.

Many hoped that, with Briones’ expertise in budget and public policy, the Department will be headed in the right direction.

Bro. Armin Luistro, her predecessor and the chief implementer of K to 12, hailed her appointment, saying, “She brings with her a wealth of experience in public finance and administration which would be beneficial to DepEd, being the agency with the largest budget.”

Meanwhile, during her confirmation as secretary, then chairman of the Senate Education Committee, Senator Bam Aquino, calls her a true champion of education. “Based on her accomplishments alone, she is qualified for the job,” he said.

In her first few months, she said that she will take on the challenges in DepEd, including continuing to build on what Former Sec. Luistro had done, including the implementation of K to 12 “while adding her own vision, perspectives, and initiatives.”

But almost six years in, it seems that the incremental change in the department under Briones’ tutelage is being overshadowed by the full-blown crisis that is brought about by the pandemic. And it is even more frustrating, if not extremely infuriating, that her successor will be someone who has no experience in the education sector, much less an educator herself.

Sara Duterte, who initially wanted the post of Secretary of National Defense, has been appointed by Marcos to lead the education department. And while Duterte has graciously accepted the appointment, it cannot be overlooked that this is the first major disagreement between the two parties, whose coalition as everyone has noticed is hanging by a thread.

She will inherit an educational system barely on life support, with the Philippines being the only country in the whole world that has not yet physically opened its schools since the pandemic hit in March 2020. This, on top of the existing challenges, will be an uphill battle and shall require someone with the right credentials and expertise.

But Duterte, like a good soldier (at least for now), said that she’s ready to rumble. In January, she expressed her plans of requiring two-year mandatory military service for all Filipinos aged 18. She cited countries like South Korea and Israel as examples and justification for her proposition.

But unlike the two countries, the Philippines is not in a state of war. South Korea has been in an armistice agreement with North Korea and war could break out at any time, while Israel is constantly in tension with Palestine and other neighboring countries. If instilling discipline and patriotism is her primary objective, then there are myriad ways to achieve these without subjecting our youth to military training.

And although she dismissed fears of her critics that revising history is far from her plans for the department, there is no assurance of this. It is in her interest, as well as her president, to do it in order to conceal their families’ crimes from the Filipino people.

The education department is too important for someone with very little to no experience to handle it. And if the incoming administration will insist on this appointment, then it is already safe to assume that it is a lost cause already

  3. comrades marriage is a commitment so it may be very hard to make that decision. If you haven't come to that point then dont. Sometimes its just meeting the RIGHT kind of woman that will push you in making that decision.

Also marriage may be essential if you want to have a family and kids. There is a JOY in marriage if you can FIND it and work hard to keep it. Specially if you have kids. My world turned around when I held my newborn daughter in my arms. FRom then on SHE was the centre of my life.

BPI ang payroll bank ko havent tried them, ang tinatarget ko kasi yung mga CC na may airline miles, i applied for the citipremier miles card kasi 30php/mile siya at that time, tas 360k annual income lang need. Not sure why i got rejected, i wish they would say.

  6. we pine for love lost

of  memories spent in days of happy  sunshine

seemingly endless moments  when I called you mine

    I look at snapshots

of places and times and unforgotten

of a love kept alive  within this heart that still beats for you and calls your name

    but there is no answer

only stillness . and the long aching silence.

Funny thing, I know Miro Quimbo, his brother Rudy, and Mike Defensor. Chandra (with an 'r') Shahani was my classmate in one subject. I even used to hang out with Kiko Pangilinan in one tambayan (kung saan madaming maganda) but he won't remember me anymore, I guess. Thing is I see no relevance.

Hmmmm that is why am pretty much careful in citing credentials and friends etc comrade.  And i agree that what we post must be relevant to what is being discussed . All the experiences and friends cited must have a bearing on the post otherwise its fluff and may just cloud and obscure the issue altogether.

There will always be the lesser and greater of among us. And since we hide behind MTC handles there is pretty much no way to vet personal claims. So i usually rely on the quality of posts ( as we all do ) to paint the picture of the poster.

My point to the poster is that in my 12 years in the UP system ( two in elementary / four in high school / six in college ) I had personal knowledge of just one case of faculty trangression.  Add that to the fact that to this day many of my friends still remain within the system and we freely share amongst us their past as well as present experiences in the University. Still I agree that transgressions may have occurred. However proving it in a forum by citing proof and evidence is the crux of the matter.

Madaming mga Pinoy coaches na puede

Feel free to cite comrade. Time permitting of course. Pero I see your point that being foreign doesn't always equate to being better. Goldwyn Monteverde's UP team beat the Tab Baldwin led Ateneo.

As in sports though it is a team effort . Goldwyn Monteverde may have had a better team in that best of three series.

sana all free or mas mababa man lng ang tuition fees :)

Di hamak naman talagang mas mababa comrade. The bigger question here though may not only be the lower tuition fees but the standard of education .

And there is good news .

This from the  Commission on Higher Education  in a report issued 29 April 2022 .

"The most notable improvement in this international ranking is the entry of eight State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) – Mariano Marcos State University in Ilocos Norte, Central Luzon State University in Nueva Ecija, Tarlac Agricultural University in Tarlac, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology in Iligan, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology in Nueva Ecija, Visayas State University in Leyte, Cebu Technological University in Cebu and Tarlac State University in Tarlac."

I stand pale before all the experience and friends and acquaintances you mentioned.  I will not even dare mention mine because after all that is not the point here is it ?

Re UP issues again the University is not perfect and SOME of its faculty and administration not totally guiltless. Again as I have said it happens.

The greater thing to consider perhaps is that the University on the overall maintains its integrity  and academic standards.

Happens comrade. Kung ganyan ang pagiisip na i-aapply natin sa lahat ng bagay ay daan libong OFW Pinoys siguro ang mawawalan ng trabaho. It all about job qualification , competence and experience. Siguro kailangan munang patunayan muna na may Pilipino na may equal qualification , competence and experience who was denied the job  for your point to make sense.

Comrade , the University of the Philippines is a state university and therefore is open to all those deserving and qualified regardless of socio-economic status. Sad to say the economically disadvantaged students wanting to enter UP may also be hampered by poor schooling , poor parental support , lack of proper diet and a host of other ills. This maybe the BIGGER PROBLEM which sad to say cannot be addressed by the University  in setting up the passing standards. As I wrote in an earlier post UP tried to address this and the experiment failed.

Re the cases that you mentioned no system is perfect. I hope you agree that cases like the ones you mention  not only in UP  but in other educational institutions as well.

RE your nephew from Don Bosco  and the scion of a Senator there will always be rumors like these but they are best rumors unless proven true.  Posts like this throw undue shade on the institution . This is a public forum and it may do well to post responsibly.
