  1. UTAH rips SEATTLE ... goes 8-1 !

SEATTLE (AP) -- Deron Williams continued his streak of outstanding all-around play with 27 points, reserve Matt Harpring added 21, and the Utah Jazz improved to 8-1 with a 118-109 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Friday night.

The 8-1 start for Utah -- best in the NBA -- is the second-best in franchise history, trailing only a 9-1 start to the 1999 season. Utah gets a chance to match that on Saturday night, hosting Phoenix.

It's unclear if Andrei Kirilenko will play in that game. The talented Russian forward stayed in Salt Lake City, missing his second straight game with a sprained right ankle.

Utah didn't need him against the Sonics. Not with Williams scoring at least 20 points for the third time in Utah's last four games and six Jazz players scoring in double figures.

Mehmet Okur scored 15 points with 11 rebounds and Carlos Boozer had 14 and 13. Rookies Ronnie Brewer and Paul Millsap both finished with 11 points.

Williams scored 23 in the second half and combined with Derek Fisher to hand out 14 of Utah's 27 assists. Williams also kept Seattle's Luke Ridnour in check, leaving the Sonics' scoring load to Allen and Rashard Lewis.

Allen finished with 32 -- his fourth game already with 30 or more points -- and Lewis added 24. But a third and fourth scorer failed to emerge for the Sonics (4-6), who have lost two straight at home after a three-game win streak.

Ridnour finished with 15 points, most coming late. Ridnour had scored 19, 32 and 20 points, respectively, in his last three games.

  2. Utah has had San Antonio's number ever since Boozer and Okur came.. For the past seasons, it has been a surprise for me seeing my Spurs succumb to your Jazz time and time again.. TD seems to lose focus that he has to defend Okur even behind the arc.. Guess, ako ang dehado pare..

Therefore, a japanese dinner might be too much.. Kuripot no? Coffee bet na lang.. Then off we go somewhere for a nightcap? Yknow? wink-wink!!!

    bos revi ... you're on !

  3. yo ma man revi ! while i'm reeling from a surfeit of unexpected victories from the jazz ... how about a japanese dinner bet ... the jazz against the spurs in their first meeting of the season on 30 november ( manila time ) ? loser treats winner. deal ... or no deal ? :D

  4. Try Annapolis Chinese restaurant... it serves XO sauce... not like other resto that u still have to request for the sauce... their XO sauce is specialty of the house... they actually sell them... the food is comparable to gloria maris, price is a tad less than GM... try their fried eel and cold cuts (served with california maki)... :)

hello sir ! can you tell me just where this is ?

  5. for more on the emergence of deron williams and his comparison to chris paul ... check out this quote from todays SI website:

" No team has started better than the Jazz. While a healthy Carlos Boozer and, for a time, Andrei Kirilenko, have played their parts in the Jazz's 7-1 beginning, perhaps no one has made a bigger impact than second-year point guard Deron Williams. We asked an opposing team's scout for his analysis of Williams' growth and potential.

"Everybody talks about Chris Paul, but I don't know that I wouldn't want Deron Williams as my future starting point guard over Paul," the scout says. "He gives you more things defensively and his body is going to enable you to do more things offensively. He brings it on both ends.

"I'd be OK with him defending almost any starting point guard in the league. Imagine a Chauncey Billups with athleticism, and that's really what he is. He's a power point guard. This year he's slimmed down a little bit, he's quicker. And with an entire year under Jerry Sloan's system, he knows all the intricacies of the offense now."

  6. By far the Utah Jazz are the biggest surprise of the season...

You got Okur.. Kirilenko... Boozer... Harpring... so I figured they'd be competitive but not this good..

Especially when AK47 went down... I didn't expect them to win against the Clippers

And win they not only did... but in a very convincing fashion as well!

they got the mighty "MO" as in momentum on their side. and with three games in the next four days ( seattle , phoenix and toronto ) , we'll see just exactly how good these guys are.

  7. i've been a jazz fan since the 90s when the stockton-malone-hornacek trio were the essence of the team. and i'm just so happy that their tops in the nba right now. my heart sank when ak47 got injured (again), but like you guys, i'm confident that okur and boozer will lead this team. williams, too, has better stats. he probably has something to prove: that he's better than chris paul. he was of course, drafted ahead of the hornets star.

hey spongebobby ! nice to have another jazz fan onboard! yup ... my love affair with the jazz also started when the jazz met the bulls for those two straight years. re ak47's ankle ... the team is deeper and more confident now and can weather even the temporary loss of the andrei. millsap did a wonderful job ( 4 blocks and two steals ) in the clips game. IMHO ...even sloan has changed a bit ... starting a rookie ( ron brewer ) in a game . re the cp and deron comparisons ... check out the thread below for a stats comparison ( current season only ) between the two.

  8. Ei! A thread for the Utah Jazz.. About time..

I like the way they are playing as of now.. If Boozer stays healthy.. even without AK47.. I think the Jazz would be okay.. IMHO, Okur and Boozer are the real heart and soul of the Jazz.. Kirilenko provides the hustle and will surely be missed.. But they still have Matt Harpring.. And don't forget Deron Williams.. who seems to be having a great sophomore season..

CJ Miles, and Millsap are a surprise.. And I am surely excited with Ronnie Brewer.. I have seen some of his highlights and I am telling you, I think he is arguably the best athlete in this year's draft.. I just hope he receives some more playing time..

BTW, Welcome to the sports thread, F.F!!!

hello boss revi ! thanks for welcoming me and the thread.

sayang nga as the first jazz game on solar BTV will be 30 november pa.at this stage i have to content myself with watching the espn highlights on my pc as well as the nba highlights on tv.

may highlights ka ni ronnie brewer ? interesting. a lot of experts picked him to be a draft darkhorse. anyway ... he adds on a something which the jazz have had little of ... explosivenesss and athleticism . imagine two years down the road ... d-will and brewer might rank among the league's best backcourt combos.

millsap looks like a true hustle player. might be too early too tell though . once the surprise wears off rest of the league's players wise up he might find it harder to get to the ball.

anyway ... having the best record ( jazz at 7-1 ) in the league is something to really savor and enjoy ...

  9. Utah Jazz off to a 7-1 start ! despite the ankle injury to AK-47 ... boozer , dwill , okur , harpring and rookies brewer and millsap combined for another great game to rip the clips !

  10. Unfortunately, the five year tax exemption to investments of over 5 years doesn't apply to UITF except for SPECIFICALLY TAX EXEMPT UITFs. I've found only three such tax exempt UITFs as listed below:

BPI Institutional Fund UITF YoY ROI = 12.3926500

ING Bank, N.V. ING Tax-Exempt Peso Fixed Income Fund YoY ROI = 23.4800000

ING Bank, N.V. ING Tax-Exempt Philippine Equity Fund (UITF) YoY ROI = 48.9300000

YoY ROI = Year on Year Return on Investment

    salamat doc !

  11. As an investment medium, the variable life funds of both Manulife and Axa are not bad choices. My take is that the costs these funds incur are higher. They are allowed marketing expenses, like agent's commissions and advertising and usually have upfront costs (like a participation fee). Then, they also ask the trust banks to invest them. My experience with agents generally is that they present an assumption of rates (which are not allowed in UITFs) more so if they still use the accrual system. So why not just go direct to the investment manager, which is more likely a bank too? But if you feel comfortable with this, no reason not to invest in these products. I just seem to have a bias for UITFs. I wonder why?

you da MAN doc ! actually friend ko kasi yung manulife agent and i owe her a lot for telling me to hang on to my manulife shares when they were given out to existing plan holders.

huling hirit doc ... if you had some dough to invest ... could you give me 3 uitfs i could bet on? my investment horizon is 5 years para tax free.

  12. That is quite correct. That is a mantra among the UITF managers 'Historical Performance is Not a Guarantee of Future Performance'. Unfortunately, one still cannot predict the behavior of the market prices. If we could, then all of us would be quite rich by now. The historical performance can be an indicator of how well the investment manager is doing. For example, if he/she consistently outperforms the market, then it is likely he will also do it in the future.

Did you redeem your UITF during those black days of May? Doing so would indeed have wiped out any gains you would have made under the CTF. If you had simply stayed in, the losses would have been unrealized.

hi doc! grabe ... i learned a lot from this thread. btw ... what's your take naman on the variable life funds of maulife and axa ? i'm thinking of plunking a small amount in it .

    salamat in advance doc!

  13. Whether you like it or not, CTFs will be wound down by October 26, 2006. If you do nothing, your CTF placement will be moved to a UITF at best or at the worst, they will simply put it in savings. The BM said 12% but that is year to date, not per annum. That means from start of the year to current date, the rate is 12%, if you annualize it (per annum) that is pretty high. You have to remember that is only the historical rate and there is no guarantee that it will perform just as well in the future. But considering your alternatives which is special savings and time deposit, then I suggest you go to a fixed income medium term UITF. At least you will have steady but not spectacular rates of return much much better than special savings or timed deposit. By the way, the 7% is not guaranteed for a CTF, a CTF's return is much more manageable since it is on an accrual basis and not marked-to-market.

salamat doc pepper ! you da man !
