am very surprised at the many restos in banawe now... i used to live along banawe since the early 70's to the late 80's... am quite sure my old neighborhood is now gone... naabutan ko pa ang han pao, they serve great spiced chicken feet and congee... and of course the nostalgic ma mon luk, almost at corner banawe and q. ave.

pugay!

My review of SHANGHAI Hand-Pulled Noodle House

Location:

Retiro St. (almost at the corner of Banawe St.)….. If you’re coming from Quezon Ave., turn right at Retiro which I think will be the first stoplight. After turning right, look to the right immediately, there is a PANSIT na taga MALABON shop and almost (if not actually) beside it is the noodle house itself. Parking is a bit limited, but you can park a bit farther and make a very short walk.

Space and Ambience:

The place is a bit small when compared to Ling Nam banawe….. I think I counted only 6 to 7 tables with each table able to sit four people. There is practically no special decors for this slightly cramped place, I guess the only thing worth watching is the gentleman who hand-pulls the noodles. But trust me on this…. You’re here for the food and not the ambience

What’s on the Menu:

Dumplings

Two flavors…. Pork or Kuchay and you can have it either steamed or fried, I ordered the steamed kuchay dumplings since I’m a stickler for it. Not sure if these are home made or they brought it from somewhere else. The wrapping is a bit loose so the fillings tend to fall off if you’ll bit into it. BUT they are tasty. ( I hope to try the fried dumplings when I go back)

Noodles

They come in a few variety of flavors….. beef, chicken, fish and seafood. From looking through the glass window that separates the kitchen from the dining area, I can see that the broth base is common for all the flavors. The difference is in the toppings. One can also have their noodles dry.

The noodle itself is freshly made….. probably after making your order to the waiter, the noodle maker starts doing his work and hand pulls a couple of noodles from a big dough, dips it in hot water, transfers it to a bowl which is then topped with meat and the broth.

My verdict:

The noodles are more or less consistent….. I believe it takes a lot of skill to hand-pull noodles and I think the person doing it did a job-well-done. The thickness of the strands were more or less the same and its texture was just right for slurping.

I think the winner here is the broth itself…… not oily, not bland but not too flavorful that it tends to overpower the toppings.

how's the hot & sour soup???? (im a fan of hot & sour soup)

I do hope its not the type where some of the other establishments will put in chinese hot sauce to make it "HOT" (in the end, its just going to taste like hot sauce)
