Spartacus Star Andy Whitfield Leaves Show After Cancer Recurrence

TV Guide - September 18, 2010 3:01 PM PDT

Andy Whitfield has dropped out of Spartacus: Blood and Sand's second season to continue cancer treatment, Starz announced late Friday.

Whitfield, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in March, had been in remission until doctors recently advised him to resume aggressive treatment. Whitfield said at Comic-Con in July that he felt "better than ever" and was training hard to resume work on Season 2.

"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved," Whitfield said in a statement. "It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far."

The epic drama halted production in March after Whitfield was initially diagnosed. The network then produced a six-part prequel to give Whitfield time to recover before starting work on Season 2. No immediate decisions have been made about the future of the series, but the prequel will still air in January 2011.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."

Former Prison Break star Wentworth Miller might be filling the loin cloth of cancer-stricken Andy Whitfield on the Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Whitfield had to drop out of the show after doctors advised him to rest up. Miller was last seen about twice his previous size, so he'll have a bit of lifting in the yard to do.

Given his supposed sexual orientation, I'd expect to see Barca "trying" him out....

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, the disgraced former head of HBO, has announced that there will be a second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The show's future was in question after star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with cancer. Whitfield will not be a part of Season 2 on the advice of his doctors, and no replacement has been named. But whoever it is will be required to look good with his shirt off and deliver authentic softcore-porn pelvic thrusts.

What I heard is that Season 2 would not be a sequel, but it would be a prequel. It will be named Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. It will feature Batiatus taking control of his father's arena (ludus). Dunno if this would take our minds away from what transpired in Season 1.

This is a disappointment in my book. They should have just replaced Andy Whitman and just went on to make the sequel.

it's "300" meets "ROME" B)

i like Andy Whitfield.

in hindsight, i think he would have made

a better Leonidas than Gerard Butler, who

i found to be over the top.

i could already imagine Whitfield almost

whispering, "But this is Sparta..." sabay sipa

sa mensahero ni Xerxes sa pit.

teka, teka...

di ba si Doctore yung gumanap na mensahero sa 300?
