The Best Spanish Foods/Restaurant

mahilig ka ba sa cochinillo, paella, jamon serrano, fabada, chorizo, atbp...

 

saan ka kumakain nito... let's share in a gastronomic feast of spanish cuisine.. share your experiences (local or foreign), recipes... if you had a not so pleasant experince too, share it!!!!

 

my favorite spanish restos here are Guernica in Remedios Circle; Casa armas - GB3, Podium and in Nakpil area (the original), La Tienda behind Burgos, Makati.

 

my favorite dishes ... paella valenciana, and mix of tapas...jamon serano, chorizo, cheeze, sardines, croquetas. wash it down with wine during the meal and coffee after the meal.

 

to enjoy a spanish banquet give yourself as much as 2.5 to 3 hours for the full set meal starting with your tapas , then your main dish of paella, to your dessert and coffee.

 

pace yourself with alot of story telling...

you may be looking for a cozy, warm, private and friendly place for a small group, try, Barcino Gourmet, 2/f City Golf Plaza, Ortigas Town Center, Julia Vargas.. tel. 6342963..

 

This place has a deli packed with Spanish goodies and sell wines which you can consume there...

 

A truly GREAT place..

i love spanish food. while still in manila i frequented --

 

casa armas - good salpicao, paella, cochinillo...

 

la tienda - the hams... the sausages... everything inside that store... :D

 

and alba's - for everything? :P

 

but ive never gotten into spanish desserts...

 

the closest thing i have had to spanish food here in tx would be ...

 

colombian food? its not the same though... :)

interesting!!! the first place on earth where i would think spanish food would abound outside Spain would be in Texas... didn't the spaniards influence much of the south and southwest?

 

i had the occasion to visit tx... dallas and the fortworth areas and austin.... wasn't there long enough to appreciate what those cities had to offer....

These days, it's Casa Armas at Sct. Rallos. From what I understand, the one at the Podium is just a franchise. The original is somewhere in Malate while the Rallos is a branch run by the original owners.

 

I used to have another favorite several years ago, Barcelona along Julia Vargas in Ortigas. Very decent paella negra plus their crema catalan was really, really good. Too bad they had to close shop. I don't know why.

 

Before that, my parents used to take us out at Minggoys. Alba has been around for a long while but for some reason, we like Minggoy's better.

 

There's another good Spanish Restuant at the Glorietta. Tried it once (malayo kasi sa amin!) but forgot the name. Not the "usual" spanish fare. Very good.

On the top of the list of my favorite tapas would be chorizo and tortilla (not to be mistaken for the Mexican variety). Of course, who can refuse croquetas and jamon (jabugo if available)? Not much of a cheese person though . . .

ah, yes! Bacelona was a hit, but the project was not sustained. Minggoy's was a classic when there was just one in Magallanes. They expanded in Ortigas Pasig but the quality of food and service was awful!

 

Alba is still there, I think. Very close to La Tienda at the back of Burgos Street, Makati. A Spanish resto in Glorietta? or are you referring to Una Mas in GB2 fronting construction site of The Residences. If it's Una Mas, I have to say that you might as well try a different place. I went there once, it had the eat all you can, no left over buffet style dining. The food wasnt great, the ambiance was chaotic. I never went there again.

think... MEXICAN ... thats what we have here... we have mexican restaurants by the truckload... from tex-mex to authentic mexican to rustic mexican... you name it we got it...

 

my dentist who is colombian says there are several small spanish restos that i intend to hunt up in the next few weeks ... im just gonna go search for this cuban cafe that he has been raving about (two of them actually)...

 

actually, texas has the greatest diversity as far as food is concerned - its such a big place with a highly diverse population. the thing is ... its the size that makes it difficult to search up tiny, hole in the wall places ... and these are the ones that usually serve up the best food.

 

i shall continue the search and keep y'all posted... :)

 

in the meanwhile, i guess its gonna be jambalaya for me. for now. :D

minggoy's in either alabang or magallanes back in the day was always a favorite of my family's. although i did try the one at the fort recently and it's not so bad. alba's rocks... the iberian chicken is like nothing else on earth. casa armas anywhere else except malate sucks. sala in malate also sometimes has spanish fare. la tienda, terry's and santi's have good selections of spanish items. terry's is definitely the place as well to get that early evening satisfaction for your munchies.

That was just too bad. Now, I think San Mig took over it's location?

I agree. They even attempted to put up "Twist of Minggoys" at Eastwood (which later on just became "Twist") but it's not the same . . .

I'm pretty sure it's not Una Mas (which also has a branch at Greenhills diba?) Haven't tried it yet but I am always suspicious about buffet offerings. And based on your warning, it seems I shall never try it ever. Hahaha!

 

The owner of the restaurant I was talking about is a Spanish lady from Catalan. It's very new. They don't have buffets. And they also don't serve the "usual" dishes. The specialty is Pesca del Sal which is sea bass covered in layers of rock salt and then baked. That's what we had. Very, very good. I will ask my friend who brought me there as he is more familiar with the place (I am not a Makati person).

That fish dish really sounds and tastes good. Sea bass is a great without much fanfare.. The fish is meaty and tastes clean...

 

Post back the name of the resto... Am sure a good place deserves the patronage...

Thanks for the inputs, Bods! I truly appreciate your inputs. Like in most of the threads I post in, I am a trying hard amateur, driven with nothing else but passion.

 

Barcino?! Anytime pare, what better way to enjoy spanish tapas with good wines, a warm and cozy place with friendly hosts....

The only Spanish restaurant I've tried is Dulcinea - is this authentic? The callos and tuhod y batoc are good. I'm curious how much better the more expensive Spanish restos are.

 

Aruba at Metrowalk serves great paella and lengua.

 

 

I really haven't tried much of the food in dulcinea except for chocolate con churros and their pastries like argellana and their glaced fruits (which i think is really special).

 

Will try the paella and lengua at Aruba on my next visit. Thanks for the post...

The only Spanish restaurant I've tried is Dulcinea - is this authentic? The callos and tuhod y batoc are good. I'm curious how much better the more expensive Spanish restos are.

 

Aruba at Metrowalk serves great paella and lengua.

 

im not sure if its considered authentic by the foodies but i like their tuhod y batoc too.

 

their fruit punch is pretty good... and some of their pastries... :D

you mean like a truckload of illegal Mexican immigrants :P

 

well, Mexican is not that bad - I enjoy it myself, especially with the Taqueria Chilanga here.

If you remember that book I told you about last year - the one whose author is a Houston resident and food writer of your daily there - he writes about cool Mexican restaurants there. If you promise to send me a cabrito here, I shall give you the list - complete with descriptions and their locations :P

 

pareng masi - sorry for this real outrageous OT post pero wala talaga akong alam pa sa Spanish eh :P
