Bible Versus Science

Recommended Posts

The apocalyptic ANC ad on TV depicts the situation of biblical authors-prophets describing the events of the future. Of course ancient personalities have no way of knowing the future in terms of modern words and expressions. They may have been given a window to what would happen but can they really relate to those who live today what they have seen? Their vocabulary is limited and their technology/culture is a lot primitive.

Personally I don't buy that explanation. If the writers were divinely inspired and had copied their god's instructions word for word, then why can't god say something like: "In the future, there will be something called the internet. Don't bother understanding it now. Just write it down exactly as I say: I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T." God was pretty explicit and detailed in the first few books--why couldn't be just as explicit?

Biblical study is good. But one must devote time and effort and not just browse through literature as if it is a straightforward story. It is not a story but a collection of books with much more than stories. They are experiences that readers stand to learn from.

Many bible stories are seeds of blockbuster movies and classic novels. But before judging the Bible for its real worth, take time out to follow the instructions it provides because these stories would mean nothing if we keep repeating the problems they present.

I agree that it is good to study the bible. It can be considered as an art form---similar to Homer's Iliad or Virgil's Aeneid. True, there are some things that we can learn about human nature and their mythology from these books.

But what experiences can the readers stand to learn from the bible? That we should commit genocide? k*ll people who work on the Sabbath? Practice slavery? Rape and pillage?

religion and science

these two fields still has mysteries shrouded on them

science still has not answers to all our queries

and religion still needs more proof than just scriptures.

all that is certain when man perfects science and contains all the answer to his

questions, man will become supreme as God

science is based on explainable facts...

religion is on established beliefs...

science attempts to provide answers...

religion attempts to control society...

the Bible is a written compilation supposedly of historical content by man, edited throughout the centuries...it contains veiled facts and by opinion, fiction as well...

I am more of a scientific minded person reason being - science is based entirely on proven facts while the bible is more of historical data and stories that we have yet to be proven as true or correct.

I don't mean to offend the more religious people out there.

This is entirely my own opinion, no harm intended.

Peace.

The bible E X P L I C I T L Y states that the proud would N E I T H E R see God nor understand his nature. Even Jesus spoke in parables so that they may look but not SEE, listen but not HEAR and study (read) but not UNDERSTAND.

God alone deserves worship. He alone is the source of Truth & understanding. It won't be man, but God who reveals Himself to the deserving.... He would test our hearts with FIRE, and those who pass the testing are made worthy to become children of God.

Meanwhile, the Pharisees and the learned, hard as they tried, eventually MURDERED Jesus because he kept silent & let the facts speak for themselves. Even today, people are persecuted and martyred for the sake of Truth. Perhaps this event shows how wrong people can be regarding these matters. Since eventually, those who try to impose their morals to others, and make living out of it succumb to the exact EVIL and CRIME they thought others have committed.

You ought to know that the first five books were written by Moses.... Moses was not raised an Israelite, but as an Egyptian nobility. Also, Moses lived in the desert for a LONG time in self-exile, before God commanded him to leave for Egypt and rescue the Israelites. These five books are testament of what had happened and why Israel never became the national emblem they had always wanted to be. In short, these books showed that Israel was a FAILURE.

Despite all the innuendos and self promotion of Israelites afterwards, the five books stand as PROOF or evidence of God's nature.

Now, if you try to quote all the human “wannabe” innuendos and fantasies, you are going to be misled. That is not the Truth at all. You’ll end up like the Pharisees who never saw in Jesus the saving grace and message of redemption for all of mankind. In your thirst for Truth –which you don’t quite possess, would end up participating in the murder of the Truth – when it comes on a visit.

well, all so-called mistakes or discrepancies in the Bible can be scientifically explained to be correct. if you think that the Bible is full of mistakes, i suggest you do some researching and studying first. i use to think the Bible was not really the inspired Word of God, even believing people when they say that a lot of things written there are scientifically wrong. but everything changed when i met this american pastor. he's a nuclear physicist. he worked for nasa for more than a decade. he quit his job to become a pastor. once he visited the philippines and stayed at our place. one night i presented him a list of "mistakes" and "discrepancies" in the Bible i got from the internet. there was probably about 20 or more, since i got them from different sites. for more than 3 or 4 hours, he explained every single thing to me in detail. smartest person i know. and he's a Bible man. now i don't doubt the veracity of the Bible. now i do some studying and researching myself and i still come to the conclusion that the Bible is truly the Word of God and it contains only the Truth.

i know a lot of you would disagree with me. it's ok. we all got our beliefs and opinion. this is mine.

Hmmm not really. Remember that Gregor Mendell is a monastary monk.

And if I am not mistaken he discovered the Law of Heredety, the

passing of heredety traits. And I think it is considered as one of the top

ten discoveries in the history. Because his studies paid the way to the

study of genetics..

hirap ata pagdiskusyunan yung bible at science..may mga bagay kasi na sinabi sa bible na nagkakatotoo narin..

I kinda agree to this..but not because of the logic presented by madame wynona.

IMHO Science basically could not explain everything. Even if vast amounts of money, decades, or even centuries of research, would be invested in the realm of science and knowledge. There would somehow be a gray matter that would just be based on pure threories and not much evidence to prove that said theory. Like it or not, that would still be the scenario generations from now.

True, man could transcend evolution. We are already focusing on anti-matter, meta-physics and the like. As we are thinkers. And ages from now, technology and science would definitely make this a better world a better place (or the opposite of it). We would have developed the cure for many ailments (short of them being called "miracle drugs"). Probably even prove the existence of life outside of earth.

But as we continue to do that, for every answer that we come upon, there would be a question or two that would resurface. Aside from that, there are still other questions that have yet to be answered (and probably cant be answered). I guess these are questions more about the past instead of the future. And I guess here is where the bible, who's been offering its simple explanation, comes in. Like the creation and the eventual "destruction" of man (revelations), etc etc.

But basically, the bible is just a collection of verses, stories that were made by man as well. And those of which that got passed through over centuries. Probably some are even based on hearsays, that we cant be sure. Thus, the bible as much as we would like to believe it doesnt explain much. Here is where our "faith" kicks in.

Since both sides have questions that couldnt be answered, here is where I think that they couldnt be compared vis-a-vis. It would just be a long and tiresome debate. As both would just be based on theories.

But the thing is man is still subject to a higher being. Be it God or otherwise. For the believers, the one who created life in 6 days (the rested on the 7th). For those who think of Science, the one that caused the big bang, the heavenly bodies that roam the galaxies, the primordeal soup that created life, the fiery birth of our moon, and many others.

But then its just me thinking :)

Happy New year. Cheers!

First of all, gray matter is usually used to refer to the brain.

Perhaps, you meant to say "gray area"?

Second of all, baseless claims and assertions like "that would still be the scenario generations from now" is just so typical of the fools who believe in the bible. Would you have said the same statement 20 years ago knowing what you know now? Would you have asserted the same "prophecy" about science and technology 20 years ago given the small cellphone in your hand now?

Keep thinking, sir.

That was because the ignorant have nothing of value to say. Only the learned and the proud were articulate. Jesus spoke in parables so that his rebellious sentiments can be camouflaged in double-speak.

If your God is the perfect God, why does his ego need stroking? Why the necessity for Him to be praised and worshipped? If we are already children of God, since according to the bible, we were created by Him in His image, why do we need to earn his love? Do you ask your own children to earn your love? Isn't parental love supposed to be unconditional?

Christ was not murdered by the Pharisees! And Jesus was so loud and adamantly critical of the ruling puppet government that he had to be silenced and crucified. Who are martyred for truth nowadays? Do you even know what the truth is?

We are not trying to impose anything on anybody here! This is forum to discuss the merits of science and religion. But if the authenticity of the Bible's claims are to be the sole basis of its authority, then the contents as well as the authorship of the said book should be open to debate.

Your devotion and adherence to the supposed truths proclaimed by the bible is admirable, sir. However, have you been religiously following the dictates of the book? MTC is primarily a forum for nocturnal pleasure seekers. In your parlance, it is a den of sexual sinners. By the standard of the Old Testament, we should all be killed by now. Viewing and lusting over naked women, if not downright hardcore pornographic materials, should merit our eyes to be gouged out.

As a pious Christian dedicated to the biblical truth, aren't you supposed to do something about our vocal prurient interests?

Thanks for the correction maester spellvexit. Yeap. my bad that should be gray area.

For your second point, the scenario that I was referring to would be that so-called "gray area". I have explained it further below that statement. IF it was not that clear, then let me explain further. As man would still continue to invent and re-invent things, there would still be things that could not be explained. Science and technology could not explain all things. Sure, 20 years before, cellphones like these did not exist. Ni-Cd batteries did not exist. Nor the silicon chips that were used in these cps. They were discovered and invented. But looking further, how did the elements Nickel and Cadmium come to existence? How did the elements that make up the alloy come into existence?

Now, 50 years from now, clones could very well walk among us. The clones were developed through genetic research. How did the DNA that these scientists used come about, from another human perhaps. But where did the DNA that constitute our beings and the others really originated from?

For every bit of knowledge that men would discover, a question or two would still remain to be unanswered or would be originated from that discovery itself.

Dear maester, the origin of the universe itself is still based on theories just as the bible is.

If you have read my whole post, I am not defending anything. I am in fact non-committal and am implying that both have their own weaknesses and flaws (the bible glaringly more so). I do believe in Science, mainly because I do rely on seeing the proof behiind these theories. Whereas, the bible is mainly based on man's faith and believing without having to see anything.

But unless, Science would have the answers to everything, to every question imaginable, then I am leaving this debate to the others and am keeping my mind and options open. As this would just be a tiresome and endless debate. Both having their own convictions and opinions. Faith versus theories. Theories versus faith.

My conclusion there was that we are subject to a supreme power. Which could be God or very well another reason, or another being perhaps. Where the elements originated, the gasses that were factors in the massive explosions that created the heavenly bodies; the heavenly bodies themselves; and the list would go on and on. And that would just go either way, depending on a person's own way of thinking.

How sad for you. Is that why your reasoning powers suck?
