MANILA, Philippines — An estimated 2.3 million families experienced involuntary hunger at least once in the last three months, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed.

According to the survey, 9.5 percent of Filipinos experienced involuntary hunger in the first quarter of 2019.

 

Of this number, 8.1 percent, or about 2 million families, said they experienced moderate hunger or experienced involuntary hunger “only once” or a “few times,” while 1.3 said they experienced severe hunger or experienced involuntary hunger “often” or “always.”

The SWS defined hunger as “involuntary suffering since the survey question specifies that the hunger experienced was due to lack of food to eat.”

 

The hunger rate in the first quarter of the year was 1 percentage point lower than the 10.5 percent rate recorded in the last quarter of 2018, marking the second consecutive quarter where there has been a decrease in the hunger rate in the country.

The survey noted that hunger rate declined in Metro Manila from 18.3 percent to 11.7 percent — or 6.6 points. SWS said this was the first in four quarters that there was a decrease in Metro Manila’s hunger rate.

The hunger rate also decreased in Mindanao but slightly increased in Balance Luzon and Visayas.

The March 2019 SWS survey was conducted from March 28 to 31, 2019, using face-to-face interviews of 1,440 adults, aged 18 years old and above, nationwide.

 

Respondents were asked to answer the question, “In the last 3 months, did it happen even once that your family experienced hunger and not have anything to eat? (YES, NO).”

Those who experienced hunger were further asked: “Did it happen ONLY ONCE, A FEW TIMES, OFTEN, or ALWAYS?”

Abnoy appointed Virginia Torres to LTO. An inept kabarkada / kabarilan who has a habit of getting involved in corrupt transactions. She f#&ked up LTO operations, and got involved in various other corrupt transactions as well.

 

But Abnoy refused to fire her.

 

He eventually just let her retire hoping to let the matter rest quietly and be forgotten.

 

But her corruption cases hounded her in her retirement.

 

She died of heart attack at 63.

 

Justice still not served. Dapat si Abnoy ang ikulong.

President Rodrigo Duterte went to Pampanga on Tuesday to visit areas badly hit by the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck parts of Luzon on Monday.

Duterte inspected the quake-hit areas including the Chuzon supermarket in Porac, Pampanga which collapsed as a result of the tremor.

He was accompanied by his spokesperson Salvador Panelo and Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who represents Pampanga’s second district—where Porac is located—in Congress.

The President also condoled with the family of a victim killed in the collapse of the four-storey Chuzon supermarket and extended financial and burial assistance.

After the inspection, the President proceeded to the Pampanga provincial capitol in San Fernando City for a situation briefing from government officials on the effects of the quake.

Pampanga was the worst hit by the tremor, which killed at least 15 people and damaged public infrastructure and private properties in the province.

The province’s second district—composed of the municipalities of Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Porac, Santa Rita, and Sasmuan—has been placed under a state of calamity to allow the provincial government to tap funds intended for rehabilitation and response.

Duterte earlier directed the governors of the affected provinces to assess the damage sustained by their respective localities and take the necessary measures to ensure public safety. — BM, GMA News

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 30) — S&P Global Ratings has upgraded the Philippines' credit rating by one notch, noting that the tax reform program has proven to be a "partial success."

In a statement, the global debt watcher said that the Philippines has been raised to the "BBB+" level from "BBB" previously, or three notches above junk status.

This upgrade vouches for the stability of the Philippine economy and the government's capacity to pay its debts, making it cheaper for the country to borrow from abroad.

"We raised the rating to reflect the Philippines' strong economic growth trajectory, which we expect to continue to drive constructive development outcomes and underpin broader credit metrics over the medium term," S&P said. "The rating is also supported by solid government fiscal accounts, low public indebtedness, and the economy's sound external settings."

The credit rater said the country is enjoying "above-average economic growth, a healthy external position, and sustainable public finances."

SWS: Duterte administration's satisfaction rating reaches record high

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 3) — The level of satisfaction with the performance of the Duterte administration reached a record high in the first quarter of the year, according to an independent pollster.

The latest survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) reported that the Duterte administration had a net satisfaction rating of +72, classified as 'excellent'. This is 6 points higher than the 'very good' rating reported in December 2018.

It is the highest rating since December 2017, when the Duterte administration had a score of +70, also 'excellent'.

The survey also tackled the opinion of people on 11 key issues.

The administration had a +72 'excellent' rating on helping the poor, and +58 'very good' ratings on reconstructing Marawi and fighting terrorism.

Respondents gave the administration a 'good' rating on fighting crime, reconciling with communist rebels, reconciling with Muslim rebels, eradicating graft and corruption, foreign relations, defending sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, and ensuring that no family will ever be hungry.

The administration had the lowest score on fighting inflation, which was a +22 'moderate' rating.

Based on regions, the administration's satisfaction rating was 'excellent' in Mindanao and Visayas. It was 'very good' in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon or areas in Luzon outside of Metro Manila .

While most socioeconomic classes gave the administration an 'excellent' satisfaction rating, the poorest of the poor sector, or Class E, gave the administration a 'very good' +68 rating.

The survey was conducted from March 28-31, using face-to-face interviews of 1,440 adult Filipinos: 360 each in Balance Luzon, Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao.

The survey has a ±2.6 percent margin of error for national percentages and a ±5% margin of error for regional percentages.
