Office Success And Survival Tips

Kiss ass. Swallow your pride for that promotion or salary increase. Having too much pride will not benefit you in the workplace.

Befriend the knowledgeable people at work so that they would share their knowledge, skills, contacts, etc.

Be nice to everyone so that there will be minimal resistance as you aim for the top.

As much as possible, avoid having relationships with co-workers. Rumors and a vengeful co-worker, among others, could bring you down.

Impress your bosses and anticipate their needs. For instance, if you notice they need a report at a certain time each month, prepare it in advance.

Be a team player. In addition, if you offended someone at work, be the first to apologize. The last thing you need is an enemy.

Make yourself marketable. Be industrious. Get an advanced degree or certification. Let your bosses know that it will be a big loss if you're gone.

Take care of your name and reputation. Don't be known as that drunkard, gambling addict, or lazy bum at work. Be honest and fair to everyone.

I've followed these tips and have reaped the benefits. Do these and I'm certain you would go far.

Nine Career Killers

John McKee

Don't Keep Your Skill Set Current

The business landscape is ever-changing and there is more demand for jobs than supply. Not staying on par with colleagues and those vying for your job will be a death knell.

Fail To Deliver Results

Winners in business know that it's all about accountability. Those who harbor a sense of entitlement for simply having put forth effort, irrespective of the results of those efforts, are guaranteed to fall by the wayside.

Confuse Efficiency With Effectiveness

Those who think that communicating via e-mail replaces the need to actually talk with people around them fail to recognize the importance of personally connecting with others in today’s highly automated and technological environment. Communicating in person whenever possible is imperative for success-seekers.

Believe You Are Irreplaceable

There is no room for "divas" in the workplace. As soon as you convince yourself that you and only you can do the job "right," your star will surely start to fall.

Know All The Answers

The old adage remains true: Knowledge is power. Professing to know it all can readily stagnate a career. Winners remain unceasingly interested in learning new ideas and approaches.

Surround Yourself With "Brown-Nosers"

Losers like having people tell them how smart they are, whether or not it's true, while successful managers and other professionals accept and encourage intelligence and creativity in others.

Forget To Give Credit To Others

Losers inappropriately take full credit for positive events despite the help or input received by others, while winners give credit where credit is due. Losers inevitably reap what they sow.

Fail To Self Promote

Bragging is one thing, but letting colleagues throughout your industry know of your success through case studies, promotion bulletins or other such tools is quite another. Losers often fail to recognize the importance of letting others know about their successes, or go about it in entirely the wrong way.

Lose Perspective

Intuitive business people recognize that, despite their best attempts to do everything right, sometimes they approach roadblocks and seek the advice and perspective of a respected friend, colleague or even a business coach. Those who fail to recognize their shortcomings are destined for the unemployment line.

learn things that may or may not be related to your present work. it may come useful in the future

3. know where to find something and who to ask it from. its not what you know, its who you know

4. you can somehow control your boss if you know a lot and sneaky enough. bosses decide based on options, just limit their options to your benefit

6. never stick to your present skill set.

7. learn microsoft excel commands. reports that take 8 hours can be done in half the time if you know the commands (and macro, hahaha). combine commands to make awesome results (want to change Lastname,Firstname into Lastname Firstname?hahaha)

The modern office is a battlefield, but you can’t go in all guns blazing. Follow our 10 tips to have a promising office life.

1 ) Don’t offer to make coffee. This is pretty self-explanatory, if you offer to make coffee, people will assume you will do so on following days and you’ll forever be stuck as the coffee-man.

2 ) Shhh! Everyone in the office assumes that if they don’t say anything, then people will think that they have nothing to say, so they offer whatever they can to a conversation. Don’t be that person, speak when you want to or need to. People will listen to you more.

3 ) Don’t upset anyone. Imagine upsetting one of your friends or family, now multiply this by 3 and that’s still not as bad as what you’ve just done. Don’t make ememies at work, you’ll definitely regret it.

4 ) Do less. This sounds weird right? But think, the less you do, the less mistakes you make. So don’t try to do everything, stick to what you’re good at when possible.

5 ) Get noticed. Volunteer for roles outside of your current project, this will get you noticed and help your networking circle.

6 ) Learn the lingo. Come to terms with different with the office jargon. This way you know what people are talking about and will never be left out of conversations.

7 ) Remember your co-workers. Who are they? What do they do? Remember people and they’ll do the same. More importantly, it will build a good foundation for a friendship or healthy working relationship.

8 ) Ignore emails. Except from your boss. If it’s really important, then people will tell you.

9 ) Look at you! Ask one of your friends/co-workers (choose wisely) to notice what your ticks or habits are. Equally, notice other people’s. Does someone have a nervous twitch? It’s always good to be one step ahead.

10 ) Encourage complaints. This one’s a bit tricky. You don’t want to do it straight away or people will take advantage, but don’t leave it too late either. By doing this people will feel more comfortable around you and respect you more. It will also boost morale and the performance of those around you.
