There are so many basketball aficionados that had hesitations on the league that will form by Senator Manny Pacquiao. But despite of this, wow, it becomes emerged on new heights by opening it only last week of January featuring the teams from the cities within Luzon and NCR area, for the meantime. Pacquiao has a clear vision on how this league will run by deploying some formats (of course, there are some changes) that will benefit the fans who are looking for new flavor of Pinoy brand of basketball.

Right now, in their official Facebook page, it records a total of 60k likes and followings.

I'm hoping for the best on MPBL. They should more rely on their motto " Liga ng Bawat Pilipino" to make every city happy.

By the way, here are the pioneer cities incorporated with their respective sponsors:

  • Bataan Defenders BaiShipping

  • Batangas Tanduay Athletics

  • Bulacan Kuyas Ligo Sardines

  • Caloocan Supremos Longrich

  • Imus Bandera-Glc Trucks & Equipments

  • Muntinlupa Cagers Angeli's Resort

  • Navotas Clutch Big J Sports

  • Parañaque Patriots Yakimix

  • Quezon City Capitals Royal MNL (Manila is proper pronounciation)

  • Valenzuela Classic Yulz

Honestly, I'm worrying to PBA right now in terms of crowd attendance.

Maybe this is the proper time to shift to city versus city rivalries in order to have this league stay alive a little longer.

MPBL is an opened-eye for the basketball fans.

Maybe Marcial should check this kind of setup.

maganda yung konsepto... pero ang tanong lng eh can this league survive? ilang taon lng ba itinagal ng MBL 4 years due to financial problem nagisa-isang nalagas yung mga teams!

If this league wants to live long, MPBL should learn lessons from MBA's mistakes.

Kudos to Pacman for financially backing up this up-and-coming basketball league.

IMHO, ang naging mali ng MBA noon is they tried to compete with the PBA instead of trying to discover talents from their home province to prepare them for the big league which is the PBA

Lots of Ex PBA players here.

Gary David plays for Bataan

Val Acuna plays for Batangas (currently flawless 6-0)

What's also good about this league all their venues are full packed! Unlike the PBA nowadays

Walang ticket!

Another reason why MBA folded is due to removing the maximum salary cap of players.

Wow! Ginawa nila 'yun? Without a big corp. supporting a team back then, (except maybe sa Laguna Lakers/Air21) talagang mahihirapan ang isang team to sustain a season, kaya sa bawat taon ng MBA pabawas ng pabawas ang teams sa MBA noon

From WIKIPEDIA.

The MBA was played its first game on March 7, 1998 at the Don Narciso Ramos Sports Complex in Lingayen, Pangasinan. [1] Unlike the Philippine Basketball Association, in which teams represent companies, the MBA teams represented a particular city, province or island in the country. The league brought basketball closer to the people, and it raided the PBA for talent.

The MBA was widely viewed as broadcast giant ABS-CBN's attempt to undermine the PBA after failing to snatch its broadcast rights in 1998.

Metroball allowed foreigners to play for their teams, not requiring Philippine passports of them, nor requiring those foreigners to have Filipino blood. All the league required was that these players be born in the Philippines.

As a direct result of this practice, the MBA and its foreign-born players began attracting attention away from the PBA, forcing the PBA to escalate their own players' salaries and practically rendering the PBA draft useless through a "direct hiring" process.

This allowed PBA teams like Talk 'N Text and Tanduay to negotiate directly with MBA players or MBA prospects (like Asi Taulava and Sonny Alvarado) for their services.

However, the league folded on July 26, 2002 due to extremely high expenses on funding a regional basketball league, and most especially when broadcast partner ABS-CBN withdrew funding for the league. Several players went to the semi-professional Philippine Basketball League en route to the PBA.

Kaya nga 4 or 5 years after its inception wala tiklop ang MBA. But at least teams did managed to discover some local talents and Fi-Ams/Fil-foreign players like Hontiveros, Helterbrand, Mamaril, Reavis, PJ Simon, Hugnatan, Peña, etc.

MPBL expansion on target as teams from south to north express interest on joining next conference

It wouldn’t take long before the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League could become a bonafide nationwide basketball league.

From the south, representatives from Danao City and Masbate, joined the MPBL meeting hosted by league founder Senator Manny Pacquiao held at he Shang Palace in Makati Wednesday night.

Up north, Matthew Manotoc, the sports agent and now board member of Ilocos Norte, also sent his representatives as well as the three groups from the province of Laguna – Sta. Rosa, Binan and San Pedro.

Among the attendees, Pasig appeared committed to join the next wave of league expansion, even giving Senator Pacquiao and Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes a replica jersey of the Pasig Rios.

San Juan of former Senator Jinggoy Estrada is out to revive the San Juan Knights, who once ruled the Metropolitan Basketball Association, the precursor of the MPBL, and the group was headed by former national team coach and the franchise’s ex-mentor Francis Rodriguez.

Makati was also represented so as Bacoor of Cavite.

A few more teams are likely to join the MPBL’s expansion for the coming conference in June, but representatives from the different provinces couldn’t make it on time, but reaffirmed its desire of participating via phone call.

The intention of teams from the south could be the start of a nationwide basketball league, which is being envisioned by Senator Pacquiao.

Maliit man o malaki, may opportunity sila dito,” added Senator Pacquiao.

Duremdes said he had received calls from his former PBA teammates – Al Solis and Bonel Balingit, who were very much involved in the basketball program in Cebu – and inquired on the possibility of the league’s expansion.

An MPBL franchise is now worth P10-million and the mode of payment is P4-million initial and P500,000 per month until the team completes full payment. A P200,000 tournament fee (per conference) and P200,000 bond, will also be imposed.

The bond is being used by the league where it will get the fines from the players and coaches, but it will be returned to the ball clubs right after the tournament.

There’s also a strong clamor from Taguig to join the MPBL and Ben Chan, the well-known entrepreneur who created the brand BENCH, is likely to bankroll the squad.

But the most surprising group which showed up came from NLEX, although the group under the stable of telecommunications tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, has yet to identify which local government unit it will link up.

It’s not definite as well which company among the MVP group the club will carry, although the NLEX company had previously joined several leagues carrying SCTEX, a group which is also under the umbrella of the controlling Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corporation, participating in the Merlion Cup in Singapore and winning the Marikina City Basketball League, while the team is being coached by PBA great Jojo Lastimosa.

It’s not concrete yet which local government unit it will partner with.

The TV5 Media Center where some of the companies of MVP is holding office, could link up with Mandaluyong while there’s also a strong possibility of the group’s possible tie ups with one of the towns in Pampanga where NLEX and SCTEX is located nearby.

Current NLEX head coach and general manager Yeng Guiao served as former Vice Governor and Congressman of the first district of Pampanga. He also heads the human resources projects of NLEX, having been actively involved in several activities in the northern part of Luzon.
