Yet they went on to win a quarterfinals slot in next year's AFC Challenge Cup. If everyone already knows you're the world's # 154, then you're not overrated. You're already rated at the bottom fourth of the world's ranking. Much as we would like the Azkals to win in a tune-up match, losing in a friendly is not a good gauge of the team's likely performance in official matches. Japan lost a lot of friendlies to lowly teams prior to last year's World Cup, yet reached the Round of 16 in the World Cup. Hurdling Sri Lanka in the 2014 World Cup Asian Qualifiers would not be difficult for the Azkals, especially if the team is joined by its 4 European members in the practice in Germany. The challenge is winning against Kuwait (world's # 106 or 107, I think) in the 2nd round, as the PFF's goal is to reach the 3rd round Group of 20 late this year. Quote Link to comment
blow_gobi Posted June 18, 2011 Share Posted June 18, 2011 Team manager Dan Palami was intrerviewed by a Cebu Sun Star writer early this month. Dan said his goal is for the Philippines to qaulify for the World Cup in 2018 and to be among the Top 100 teams in the world. He also said the game against #101 (not 106 or 107) Kuwait, assuming they get through their games with Sri Lanka, will be the game to watch. If the Azkals win this home-and-away pairing, it will create a worldwide sensation much greater than the Azkals' win vs. Vietnam in the Suzuki Cup. Personally, I think Dan Palami is getting overambitious. Late last year, his goal was just to make it to the world's Top 120 (which makes the Azkals among the top teams in ASEAN, which is also in line with Smart's support to Philippine football), and qualifying to the World Cup was never mentioned. Which is more realistic on a 3-5 year timeframe. I also tend to believe Juan Cutillas more when he said it would take 12 years of continuous development for the Philippines to qualify for the World Cup. Quote Link to comment

But having the instinct of knowing what stories sell, they wrote about the Azkals anyway. Maybe if the Philippines is modestly successful in other sports, and the story could be spun into somnething that creates public interest, then the popularity of those sports would also rise. Which is good for you and me, because we'll have more local sport activities to look forward to besides boxing, basketball, billiards and chess. And, more recently, football. Dumating lang sina Phil Younghusband at iba pang FIL-AMS grabe sa mga interviews, kahit saan pumunta sinusundan. At kung tawagin pa sina Younghusband ay ASKALS SUPERSTAR. Eh akala yata ng media pa-gwapuhan ang football, kaya porket madaming pogi sa ASKALS eh sunod ng sunod, pati mga babaeng pilipina tili ng tili hahahaha. Ang nakakatawa yung nag courtesy call sila sa Malacanang nung takunin nila ang Vietnam, eh qualifying palang yun. Hindi naman sila ang World Cup CHampion. Quote Link to comment

In fairness naman kay Phil Younghusband, he was a reserved striker of Chelsea 3-4 years ago, which is a First Division English Club, and international commentators know about this and talk about this during the coverage of Azkals' matches. Neil Etheridge is a reserve goalkeeper of Fulham, also a First Division English Club, even up to today. Sa basketball, wala pa yatang ni isang Fil-foreigner na part of any NBA or even top league European clubs. None of any of our so-called local basketball superstars has ever made it kahit bangko in these top-rated international basketball clubs. And the Philippine basketball team is probably just in the bottom third at best of world rankings. Yet the media is giving up to 80% coverage on basketball on a daily basis. Football was popular in the Philippines during 1900-1930 (baseball was popular, too, during the commonwealth period up to the 60's), and enjoyed some sort of a revival when Juan Cutillas mentored the Philippine team in the early 70's. World cup qualifying is way too far pa para sa kakayanan ng team pilipinas. Japan, south korea and north korea for sure yan na ang papasok sa asian region sama nadin ang australia at new zealand. blow_gobi Posted June 30, 2011 Share Posted June 30, 2011 The results of the match was a bit disappointing, considering that the Azkals should have won by at least 2-1 to be considered in the class of Kuwait (previous match of world's # 101 Kuwait in # 169 Sri Lanka's home turf was won by Kuwait 1-0), which will be their next opponent if they get past Sri Lanka. Nonetheless, an "away" goal is superior to a "home" goal. Hopefully, the Azkals will do better on Sunday. Quote Link to comment
