Supernatural is an American cult dramatic television series regarding the paranormal. The series, which is filmed in Vancouver, Canada, debuted on September 13, 2005 on the WB, and is now part of The CW's lineup. The second season premiered on September 28, 2006, and the third season premiered on October 4, 2007. Supernatural returned on April 24, 2008 after the writers strike. On March 3, 2008, the CW announced the pickup of the show for a fourth season, which is scheduled to start on September 18, 2008.

The show follows brothers Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively, who travel across the country in a black 1967 Chevy Impala investigating and combating paranormal events and other unexplained occurrences, many of them based on American urban legends and folklore, as well as classic supernatural creatures such as vampires, werewolves, and ghosts.

The plot of the show has evolved over time, beginning initially with Sam and Dean looking for their father throughout most of Season One. Once they find him, the show becomes about killing Azazel, the demon responsible for the death of their mother. This is accomplished, but not until after Azazel's plans are completed and a door to Hell is opened, although only momentarily, releasing a horde of demons into the world. This event also sees the death of Sam, who is subsequently resurrected by Dean selling his soul at the end of Season Two. In Season Three, the plot of the show focuses on trying to save Dean from his deal. Along the way, they meet a demon named Ruby, who has an interest in Sam and claims to be able to help save Dean, as well as Bela Talbot, an "acquirer" and seller of occult objects who is constantly a thorn in their side. The brothers eventually manage to track down the demon who holds Dean's contract, a powerhouse named Lilith who also wants Sam dead. However, Sam and Ruby ultimately fail to save Dean, who, as of the end of Season Three, is in Hell.

Sam Gets a New Love Interest:

At the beginning of season 3, the addition of Ruby (Katie Cassidy) and Bela (Lauren Cohan) brought about plenty of fan outrage. By the end of the season creator Eric Kripke had sent both actresses packing, though he claimed it was for budgetary and story-related reasons, and not due to fan reaction.

Despite all the controversy that actresses bring to the Supernatural universe, Kripke is bringing one in for the season 4 premiere. TV Guide is reporting that Genevieve Cortese, who was last seen on ABC Family's Wildfire, will be playing a love interest for Sam in at least one episode.

Cortese will play Kristy, a small-town waitress who has been involved with Sam (Jared Padalecki) for quite some time when the season begins. The premiere episode, "Lazarus Rising," takes place four months after season 3's finale, and one of the ongoing mysteries of the year will be what happened to Sam during that time span. It's possible that Kristy could appear in more than one episode, but nothing has been confirmed.

from Kristin of EOnline:

If Dean thinks Hell is hell, wait 'til he sees what's waiting for him back on Earth this season: Supernatural has cast The Wire's Robert Wisdom in the recurring role of Uriel, a dangerous, intimidating, aloof, imperious, contemptuous, humorless killer.

There are angels everywhere on TV right now, and specifically, we'll be meeting two angels this season on Supernatural, but they aren't pretty babies like the ones on your refrigerator magnet: Castiel and his partner Uriel are badass seraphim. Imagine Julian McMahon with wings...Both characters will be recurring, but look for more trouble from Uriel, who is not a fan of the human race in general and who doesn't want Sam and Dean succeeding in particular.
