bottomline, the show would've been better without the angst hanging around like a thick gray cloud.
if MarketMan can't quite get why people are griping about it, he's the one who needs to get a grip.

MarketMan's post was so defensive.

Lol about him and Augusto being among the select few to hear Tony say "best pig ever" in person -- that comment is so pedestrian. Ugh.

dude was apoplectic and took it as a personal insult.

the blame's really on the producers, not the kid.
oh wait, we're not supposed to second-guess the producers too?

so he's saying we're not supposed to comment na?
c'mon. that's about as anti-pinoy as you can get!

their metaphor just didn't fly.
I've seen more coherent porn movies than this.
:hypocritesmiley:

btw, saw the replay yday...and if I'd have to grade it, it's just a bit better than DC's.

Id agree with you on the DC comparison.

The DC episode was cheesy and boring.

At least the Philippines episode had a pretty decent first half.

they ran out of stories with DC since Tony really isn't into the tourist-y/wholesome angle...

actually liked Greece...and Japan...and Colombia...and Venice...and Argentina...and Hong Kong...

of course, my fave would probably have to be NYC, where he spent the opening minutes ranting about gentrification...

so tell me, if you were the producers, how would you make the episode better?...ditch augusto's issue and harp about some false culinary expert's interests?

AB was intrigued on why Augusto would like to come back, him being a Fil-Am who only went to PI once and only for a week?

I actually liked the whole episode, save for those bragging rights that the guy with four kitchens was trying to insert...

the episode's second half, AB (where he was eating bulalo with augusto) has explained why he went ahead and did this episode , and more so on his blog...

augusto's sentiments are very true, about being in the middle, being half-american and half-pinoy...that right there gives him half-an-identity...can't belong anywhere though americans are actually more "welcoming" than his relatives on that dinner table...

did the cameras make them shy?...or is it because the relatives don't know Augusto and his family that well?

AB realized the truth of this fil-am's issues being a stranger and all (at the dinner table scene) so he brought him along going around eating lechon and so on and eventually finished with a happy ending...

bottomline, if not for Augusto, the Philippines won't even be on the series...

Ive seen both epsiodes by Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain, i definitely think that the No Resevation episode is much better than the Bizarre Foods :thumbsupsmiley:

lol ... bourdain wouldve eventually gone to the philippines.... the countless emails wouldve made him go

read my earlier post .. he couldve done the traditional No Rez formula.... cultural primer-> street cuisine->traditional cuisine->breakfast-> modern take on the local cuisine-> a meal with the locals ... even augusto's family didnt contribute anything ... the uncle cooked but he never said anything .... look at the Venice episode.. thats a classic no rez episode that worked on all cylinders.... in fact i would even take out agugusto .. get an expat who love the country and get them to show you around

the only good introspective that bourdain did was when he and his brother went to south america to follow an ancestor.. that and any new york episode...

im tired with this filam identity angst .. like what one poster said .. maybe Oprah will do a better job .. or go to michael moore hes good with that.. i like bourdain's show bec it shows food .. the story on that food ... like all viewers we kinda live through AB's travel vicariously .. i dont wanna see 30 minutes of awkwardness ... if not for the lechon that later half would have been an epic failure

in the simplest terms.

anthony bourdain + no reservations = food.

that show is not the place for angsty, im confused, who am i, pseudo existentialist issues.

im not putting augusto down ... but i feel his issues about his national heritage may be best covered in another show. (oprah, perhaps?)

que?

^
but the bragging rights were true for one---that's just the Pampango swag in full effect.
I know, I know, GMA makes you want to stab the nearest Capampangan in sight but that's just how it is.
and as obnoxious as Tayag may have been for you, at least they got talking about food.

in the end, that's where Bourdain really shines---when he keeps things simple and light but still engaging and meaningful.
you follow this series enough and you know what's gonna stick and what won't.

and sad to say, No Rez Philippines didn't quite stick, no thanks to lame little metaphors that didn't quite fly.

btw, just to stick to specifics---if you caught the Fan Contest Episode, Bourdain said that he would have to go to the Philippines at some point anyway.
credit to the kid for expediting the process but let's not make the mistake of putting up shrines to him.

finally saw the show.

truthfully, and this coming from one who doesn't really follow the show, thus i don't have any pre-concieved notions on how the show should have gone, i didn't think it was half bad. i was kinda expecting it to be in lieu of all the negative reviews directed to the fil-am and his angst.

it would probably have been nice for other upscale versions of our dishes to have been featured. afterall, everybody was one in saying that there are many versions of our dishes; probably owing to the diversity of all the regions. but then, chef tony himself mentioned at one point of the show about his apprehension to be shown all the 'touristy' stuff. but all in all, the food that were shown is a good enough representation of what the country has to offer.

getting back to the fil-am kid, i guess it can't be helped that a good portion of the show was about him and his connection to the country. afterall again, the show was based on a fan vote/phone-in/mail-in (?) special in which the kid won. towards the end of the show, chef tony did say that this particular episode was about both philippine food and him.

what i like the least though is how chef claude pushed kapampangan cuisine as the epitome of philippine cuisine. at least that's how it appeared to me. and i guess that's also partly the reason why philippine cuisine is indeed not often recognized the way other country's cuisine are.

augusto didnt win the fan contest .. he made the last round of interviews but wasnt chosen.. if they were gonna make the show about augusto and his discovery of filipino cuisine then they shouldve made him go all over the place with tony

i think they couldve played that regional cuisine ... like say which version of adobo thinks is best ... some stuff like that
