Dear Would be Sick Friends,

 

Here is a real life experience I had when I took my grandson to Cardinal

Santos Hospital, a hospital named after the memory of a very passionate

Christian man and servant leader. This happened last  Feb 9, Wednesday

10:30 pm at the Cardinal Santos Emergency  Room.

 

              THE CARDINAL RULE AT CARDINAL SANTOS HOSPITAL

                         15T DOWN OR YOU'RE OUT

 

 

" For admission po ba ang apo ninyo?  Mag-down po kayo ng P15 thousand!"

 

This was the cold reception of the admitting officer at Cardinal Santos

Hospital as I shiver upon the diagnosis of resident doctor ( Dr. Joan Tan from the

emergency room) that my 6 month old grandson ( name witheld by robbietan)

had pneumonia and needed admission.

 

I bled dry. Nanuyo lalamunan ko, nanginig buong laman ko, halos maubos ang

dugo-I could have dropped dead and mistaken for dead on arrival.

Face to face with a trained cold hearted  medical staff, I said---

" WHATTTTT, do you think I'd walk in here with  P15 cash  on hand.

That's exhorbitant!  Where does it say in your medical book that " before

you get sick, you should have 15t cash on hand or you will be refused admission!

Mamamatay ka ng dilat ang mata!"

 

"Eh yan po ang policy namin, nun Thursday (Feb 3) lang po inim-plement.

 

"Teka...Is that information posted anywhere in the hospital?

Was that  policy properly disseminated to all your good paying public?

Dapat alam yan lahat ng pasyenteng ninyong pumapasok dito! No one in his

right mind will bring that amount with him for an emergency case. Not even the richest

Chinoy in Greenhills!

 

And if the bills don't reach 15t  do I get my money back?' I retorted,

blood boiling.

 

Ay mga 1 month po ang processing ng reimbursement ninyo kung may sobra!

he answered reassuringly.

 

Ganun? You must be sick in the head!

 

Eh yun po ang policy!

 

That policy stinks as bad as your hospital services!

 

Here's the juicier part -- I had to wait for another 30 minutes for the x-ray

results while Xandro was gasping for breath.

Eto pa matindi---hinabol pa ako ng guard because I needed to pay the x-ray

fee which was taking them hours to prepare and hand over to me!

(DISGUSTING!) Mabilis sa pera, mabagal sa serbisyo!"

 

 

And so I left and went straight to The New Medical City. The next scene was

a complete turnaround from what I experienced at Cardinal Santos. The nurses

and attending physician were quick.

"Talagang emergency!  Upon arrival ,they took the vital signs.

Followed by a bombardment of questions on Xandro's  medical history.

" Kelan po nagumpisa ubo't sipon, nilagnat po ba siya, ilang araw na po ,

may history po ba kayo ng asthma, ano pong gamot ang binigay ninyo.

Nasuka po ba, nakakadede po ba ng maayos?

 

These and more.  Then , the doctor  subjected my grandson to a nebulizer.

3x in a row in a span of an hour.

As opposed to the kind of " kunyaring emergency " service we got from

Cardinal Santos.

Hours later, nakahinga siya ng mabuti,,,lalo naman  ako!

It was only after a complete emergency diagnosis that the good nurse asked

me to go to the admission office  and get a room for Xandro.

Fresh from verbal battle from the other hospital, I was geared up for the

next bout with the admitting officer

So I went through the routine again of filling up the form, . And now

here's the final blow.

 

Magkano ida-down ko.

" Naku, kung magkano lang po ang kaya ninyo. was the immediate reply.

Can I use my credit card?

Ay opo, basta Visa or Mastercard.

Nakaayos na po yung room ninyo. Ipapanik na lang po kayo pag okey na kay

doctor.

 

That's simple service! Simple courtesy of handling a panic striken customer

without taking a deep breath!

 

Now, be patient ( no pun intented)  Cast in your verdict. Or cash in your

15T! By the way, Cardinal Santos is undergoing facility repairs. Baka dun nila

gagamitin yung downpayment.

A concrete wall for every P15t  cash donor who'd give out that amount at a

moment's notice--- for every breath a patient takes!

 

Next time you go on emergency-- remember Cardinal Santos' cardinal rule "

P15T or out you go!

 

 

( I'd strongly recommend you to please pass this message to all your

friends, specially those connected with the medical community so they would

be reminded of the vow they took on saving lives!)

cardinal santos ang ospital namin and somehow, i think the email is a little exaggerated. ang deposit naman kailangan lang prior to admission e and lahat ng ospital ganun ang policy. however, hindi reason yun para hindi asikasuhin ang pasyente sa ER.

 

bottomline, wag tayo masyadong naniniwala sa mga spam email messages..

2 beses ko na natanggap yang email na yan.

 

pag nakakatanggap ako ng ganyang klaseng email, pag hindi ko kilala ang original sender, kadalasan hindi ko pinaniniwalaan. delete agad yan. napakadali gumawa ng kwento para makasira.

 

hihintayin ko muna na lumabas sa media yan at marinig ang 2 panig bago maghusga.

This is not a push for medical city, but I will happily supply the missing details to anyone who wish to challenge the veracity of the incident.

 

kaya pala c cardinal sin lang ang puedeng pumasok sa cardinal santos...

sya lang ang can afford.....

They have to show respect for the FORMER owners of Cardinal Santos,many people think the church owns Cardinal Santos,Nope,The hospital is owned by a chinoy family identified with Condos,Fertilizer etc with roots in Nueva Ecijia.It is 100% profit driven.The group which owns the hospital has no pretentions of charity

May nabasa ako yesterday sa Phil. Star although hindi pinangalan ay ito ang tinutukoy... they denied this rumors, they said they waived the deposit in case of life-threatening situation... yung nagpakalat daw ng email na yun ay mareklamong customer...

 

pero just the same hindi pa rin dapat nanghihingi ng deposit before you admit a patient...

May nabasa ako yesterday sa Phil. Star although hindi pinangalan ay ito ang tinutukoy...  they denied this rumors, they said they waived the deposit in case of life-threatening situation... yung nagpakalat daw ng email na yun ay mareklamong customer...

 

pero just the same hindi pa rin dapat nanghihingi ng deposit before you admit a patient...

 

Ang experience ko sa ganyan ay sa capitol medical center. Maganda ang policy nila dyan sa deposit. You have 24 hours to make a deposit sa admissions. the patient will be treated well from the E.R up to your room. Ako ang nahihiya kaya na i-ready at nabayaran ko yung deposit for my sister the next day.

Cardinal Santos is owned by Lucio Tan, who helicopters in and lands on the property in front (see building with LOTTE billboards painted and helipad on top).

 

He is often seen walking across Wilson St. from the helipad building into Cardinal Santos....

 

While we respect the amount of business these "taipans" generate and the jobs they create, they must never lose sight of what their hospital, specially one named after a beloved Cardinal, represents in society, and the role it plays in the community.

 

We are all not rich people, not all of us can withdraw 15t at a drop of the hat from the ATM. If this story is true, it is truly despicable. Chinoys and Pinoys must be compassionate at all times, we must imagine what it must be like to be poor, not scoff and look at them with disdain (although this person making the complaint wasn't even poor! Imagine how they would treat the less-fortunate!)

 

They must remember that money they made in this country should for the most part, be benefitting not just thier personal interests, but the Philippines as well.... not China.

 

While they generate billions in revenues, much respect must be paid to the Bureau of Internal Revenue, in this process.

 

I say this not to verify the above story, but just something all of us should ponder.

Here's my negative experience with CSMC.

 

I have to bring in my patients there for a particular procedure. Same procedure every time. Almost exactly the same amount of materials used every time, give or take a sterile tube or syringe.

 

Apparently, that one sterile tube or syringe will cause the total OR fee to fluctuate anywhere from 14K - 22K. Go figure!

 

And the renovations... that's all cosmetic. The aircon inside the OR rooms is still uneven, hot in some, super cold in another. Plus they've managed to lose one piece of equipment I brought in.

@david, pero medyo OT.

afaik, may policy ngayon ang DOH that prohibits hospitals from asking deposits from patients. probably, it can help if you can forward that email to them. tapos monitor mo na lang. di pwede kasi dapat na ganun, na uunahin ang paghingi ng deposit kesa sa welfare ng patient.

 

kung sa anak ko nangyari yan, malamang namura ko sila.

kmi meron din experience din. sa sta. teresita hospital. inadmit yung lola ng gf ko. 88 yrs old n ksi tapos may lagnat. so pinadmit sa sta. teresita ksi malapit lang. lola stayed for 12 hrs. plus 2 injections. you know how much sta. teresita charge for the common room plus 2 injections, P11,000! f#&k! sana sa ust n lng. ang tatanga p ng mga nurses don! may kasama kming balikbayan n nurse. sya pa ang nagtuturo kung ano ang gagawin! pag dating sa ust inasikaso agad. panay punta ng mga nurse kay lola para icheck. haay!!! unfortunutely lola died, pero sa ust na. up to the last minute may nagaasikasong nurses, doctors kay lola.

UST medical services are top-notch but their accounting division sucks big time..

 

They refuse to honor the benefits entitled to my mom as a GSIS pensioner (supposedly malalaki ang discounts because GSIS subsidize the acquisitions of some diagnostic machines of UST, etc.)...kung may reklamo daw kami i-brought-up daw namin sa GSIS mismo..ngek, e bakit pa nila pinost yung billboard info ng GSIS sa window nila?..

 

pagka-bayad namin binara namin ng utol ko yung kahera..we said "we as a thomasian alumni (since 1982) has never encountered a very rude employee of this institution until now.."

My dad died in V Luna (AFP Gen Hosp) and my brother in PGH. We had no problem with the staff. Kahit wala kang pera, me mag-aasikaso pa rin sayo. Masusungit nga lang yung mga guard (PGH). Ano naging problema?

 

When my wife had her specialization training in one of the DOH hospitals in Manila, I found out why. Kulang ang pondo, mababa ang sweldo ng residents at kahit consultants, dilapidated buildings, kulang sa medical equipments. Minsan nag-aabono pa misis ko sa lab tests ng mga pasyente nya. Paano pag wala talagang pera at walang tumulong sa pasyente?

 

I think, people in health services sa govt ay may dedication. If not, mag-aalisan na lang sila papuntang abroad. Ang problema, facilities at equipments.

 

Sa private naman, I tried sa Medical City. Asikasuhin ka muna then sisingilin ka pag madi-discharge ka na. Sa Makati Med naman, dun nanganak si misis. Pagka-admit, walang hininging deposit. After two days, saka humingi ng deposit (min 10k ata). Pag emergency cases, iti-treat muna patient bago humingi ng payment. Ayos naman experience ko sa kanila. Syempre, mahal nga lang dun.

A good number of residents find way to make it happen. Put another way, "inaampon" sila.

When I was a clerk, I was often moved by my residents who went out of their way to help their patients, paying for their labs and providing meds and even---and I'm not exaggerating here---their meals.

Throughout internship, I was doing it on a semi-regular basis as well.

Nothing can be more frustrating than not being able to provide the best care for patients just because they're short on cash.

Manila Doctors may bad experience kami with my uncle who had a heart attack. We had no choice but to admit him there dahil yun na yung pinakamalapit na hospital when he got the attack.

 

Na agapan naman sya pero after a day we wanted to transfer to St Luke's pina stress test sya to check kung ok na for transfer as reccommended by the doctor. So my uncle exerted effort to pass the stress test para makalabas na. Nung naka out na kami. we had a second opinion and found out na sira na pala yung isang artery. nagalit yung family doctor at bakit daw kami pina stress test. We came to realize na para pala bumigay yung heart nya at hinde na kami makalabas ng hospital at ma admit ulit dun.

 

So sad and bad

I agree. The main reason na nag-stay sa Pinas si misis ay dahil sa mga kababayan nating nangngailangan. There are instances na nag-aaway kami dahil hindi sya nakakain dahil yung pera nya binigay sa pasyente pambili ng gamot. Pag ganon, pinupuntahan ko na lang sya sa hosp kahit gabi para dalhan ng pagkain.

Para hindi off-topic. Nasamahan ko si misis minsan mag-conduct ng patient sa isang DOH hosp sa Sta Cruz. OB case na naging IM. Dahil govt hosp, madaming pasyente. Nung pumasok kami sa ER, parang warzone. Me naga-ambu duon, me nagsi-cpr dito, suture dun, etc. Bago na-admit yung pasyente ni misis, kinailangan nilang maghintay ng 30 mins. Kulang kasi yung doctors dun. That time, 3 1st yr residents lang ang andun. Sabi ni misis, yung mga seniors kadalasan nasa itaas nagra-rounds o natutulog.

 

Nang makausap nina misis yung ROD, sabi nila na puno na sila. pwede nilang i-admit yung patient pero hindi nila maasikaso kaagad. sila din pala ang nagra-rounds sa mga pasyente. pati si misis na-shock. kawawa yung mga residente. at syempre, kawawa yung mga pasyente.

 

sa isang oras na pag-stay namin dun, me isang patient na nag-expire. sobrang toxic talaga. the patient that my wife brought to that hospital also died after a few days. halos maiyak ako sa sobrang awa dun sa husband ng patient. promise.
