Stargazing

SIMULAN KO NA

I have a Meade Polaris 60AZ-M (padala saakin mula 'tate). Unfortunately, sira ang diagonal mirror ko and I am trying to look for the part.

Meron ba ditong nakakaalam kung saan pwede bumili ng parts ng meade dito sa pinas?

Anyway, super saya ang mag star gaze, kahit tumingala ka lang sa langit eh ok na, if you really just wanna SEE the wonders of our universe.

TIPS in stargazing with the aid os scopes:

1) gaze where there is little or no pollutiuon at all. Tagaytay o Silang for example

2) adjust your eyes to the darkness for atleast 15 mins (if you wana observe deep space objects like nebulas)

3) your scope should fit the purpose. meaning kuing pang planetary and scope mo, dapat planets/moons tingnan mo.

TIPS in buying your first scope (FOR NEOPHYTES ONLY):

1) BUY THE BRAND THAT CAN SERVICE YOUR NEEDS DURING AND AFTER THE SALE.

2) Buy a trustworthy brand

3) Buy a begginers scope, just to get the feel of it.

4) DON'T BUY A TOY SCOPE. buy the ones used by neophyte astronomers.

5) Buy the scope that best suites your interest. (more on this soon)

o yan, mahaba na yan. till next time.

dude,

kung meade naman yung binebenta sa TOYS R US eh ok na siguro yun. wala namang meade na toy eh hehehe

anyway, i suggest you ask other members about this or browse other forums before buying your first scope. the first scope could make or break your interest in astronomy kasi.

Also, be aware na pwede kang gumawa ng sarili mong telesscope. :)

PS:

Ano specs ng tinitingnan mong telescope? (use the format below)

SPEC FORMAT:

1) Aperture (Determines light gathering power of the scope) -->the bigger the better. This is the main consideration if you want to look at nebulas or other deep space objects.

2) Power (Magnification power) --> If you want to observe planets you should put more consideration to this item.

3) Brand

4) Price

5) Availability of after market service

What constitutes a "toy" or "department store" scope?

The answer is... anything that has an aperture of below 3 inches and advertises power (like 600X!!). [disclaimer: its better to have a higher aperture; also dont take my owrd for it]

Here is the thing John Nassr, who has an obervatory in Baguio, ask me a couple of questions before giving me his top pick for a first timer scope.

The questions focused more on: 1) degree of interest in astronomy, 2) am i interested in astro-photography, 3) do i require portability, 4) my budget. after answering the questions he told me to get Celestron 8" SCT (which is about $1000 brand new)

So the question do you want to pursue this hobby so much that you are willing to import a $1000 scope?

Also, if your budget falls around the $200 range sky and telescope suggest that you buy a decent binocs instead and start from there. The magazine rationalizes their choice by saying "you could see nebulae, galaxies, and moon craters with a decent binocs."

Stargazing is more than having a scope. Its all about learning and enjoying it.

hello guys!

for those of you who are interested in stargazing/astronomy, please refer to the discussion in the Backyard Astronomy thread in the Hobbies section.

mods, I suggest this thread and the Backyard Astronomy thread be merged since the discussions are more or less similar. suggestion lang po.=)

I am not really familiar with the names of the stars up above us but I really really apreciate it. Me & my friends were hanging out in her balcony when we have witnessed a shooting star. We were surprised but the more exciting part was when another shooting star appeared & another. I think we have witnessed 3 shooting star that night. :thumbsupsmiley:

kelan kayo nag stargazing? was it early this month? if so, baka part ng quadrantids meteor shower nakita niyo. otherwise, sporadic meteors lang mga yun. you just got lucky :thumbsupsmiley:

That was November last year :)

yeah, guess we are that lucky. talon nga kami ng talon nun. :D

ah november...the month of the leonids meteor shower...one of the best showers within a year. i have friends who compete whenever there is a meteor shower. paramihan sila ng makikita. it's a test of endurance, alertness and accuracy. masaya yun! hehehehe!

btw, to know whether the the meteors you are seeing are part of a shower or are just sporadics, try tracing the point of origin of the meteors. if they seem to come from just one point or area in the sky (the radiant), most likely you are seeing a meteor shower.
