o di ba, pasok na pasok sa travel and cuisine ang topic.

anywhere i go in the world, i always make it a point to try out the local food and the local beer.
i'm no connoiseur but i feel it helps me have a clearer understanding of the local culture.
what beers from which places have you tried and what do you think of them?

Thailand - Singha beer and the locally brewed Heineken...both are ok, medyo matapang ang singha. ice cold, it is a perfect partner to all the spicy thai dishes.

Hongkong- Tsingtao, carlsberg, san miguel....ok naman...the san miguel of course tastes different

Cambodia- Ankor beer tapos meron din silang Anchor beer. para siguro yung SMB at Beer na Beer dito sa atin. pareho lang naman ang lasa. masarap....also goes well with cambodian food....

Netherlands- Amstel beer, Heineken, Grolsh....they say amstel is brewed using water straight from the amstel river or mga heineken employees lang ang nagsasabi nun? honestly i thought heineken a little too overrated after trying it there. I think Grolsh is, by far, the best commercial beer i have ever tried.....

Germany-sadly wasn't able to try much at the the beer capital of the world. just a few from some microbreweries which were sooooooo gooooood.....also tried Poulaner beer pala. ok din

UK-Boddington's.....oh yeah. nothing like a pint of boddington's in an authentic english pub.

Mexico-Corona and Dos Equis....not too sure if dos equis is brewed in mexico or in another south american country, anyone care to enlighten me? but i like it better than corona.....i can wolf down a lot of corn tortilla soft tacos with a cold bottle of this....

USA....tried a lot of them like Miller, Coors, Budweiser, Beck's, and a lot more i can't remember....for a country that drinks a lot of it, their beers are not really that spectacular.....sabi nga, they're all the same, just piss-colored water s'all.....give me a san mig pale pilsen any day......

In Italy and France it is all wine so i did not get to try any beer while i was in those places. parang tubig lang ang wine dun eh...

China - Tsingtao, Beijing Pijiu, Hebei, etc. (once, I made a fuss in a bar when they repeatedly referred to SMB as "Hong Kong Beer"); China has almost as many brands of beer as cigarette brands

Indonesia - Anker, Bintang

Singapore - Tiger

Vietnam - Hanoi Beer (there used to be Ba Me Ba- 33)

Thailand - Singha, Leo, Chang

Lao - BeerLao

Mongolia - Chinggis Khan (also a brand of liquor)

North Korea - Paekdu or Changbai (bundok yung logo niya)

More later pag na-alala.

Hmm, I've tried a lot of beers both here and abroad and each has their own distinctive tastes.

For me, beer depends on your mood. Whether you like a light beer or a dark one.

My all time fave will still be San Miguel Beer Pale Pilsen, siya ang hari. Pinoy eh.

But during my last trip abroad, I preferred to drink Rolling Rock.

Germany - too bad you didn't get around too much. Some of teh best beer in the workld is here - but only if it's fresh from the brewery. When bottled it loses a lot of its character. Kolsch - a very light beer is best consumed in its hometown of Cologne (Koln). Sat in a beerhouse drinking one night - you sit at communcal tables, and they serve it in small glasses. No need to ask for a refill - as soon as your glass is empty it's whisked away and replaced by another. Easy to get drunk that way - believe me, I know first hand.

USA - the commercial beers are generally terrible. Beck's is a German import. Not that it's any better. Of the commercially available beers, Sam Adams is perhaps the best. Closely follwed by Henry Weinhardt's. Some others are coming on the scene but they'r not widespread yet.

For local beers, Anchor Steam in San Francisco is awesomely good. Buffalo Bill's in Hayward is a great neighborhood microbrewery. Jack's in Fremont is a close third, IMHO. Red Hook in Washington state is better than the commercial stuff but not as good as the local microbrews.

There IS good beer here in the US, but it's not to be found in Safeway, Albertson's, or a local liquor store. You gotta go to the source - small production, careful quality control, the personal touch n brewing.

Italy and France - next time, try Stella Artois and let me know what you think of this stuff.

Yard House in Long Beach has a wide variety of beer choices (around 280 kinds), but sad to say walang San Miguel...

My favorite is their Oatmeal Stout. It has thick foams and brown in color that changes into black after a couple of minutes. Taste like chocolate but kicks hard...

A second favorite is their Bay Hawk Porter... Taste like Guinness, but a little sweeter on the side...

Wish we have these beers back in Manila...

Asian beer... San Mig light and pale still the best! They say its because of the quality of water used. Tiger (singapore) and Singha (thailand) ok din. Taiwan beer (where else but Taiwan!) is also fine. Worse I've tried is this indonesian beer w/c I forgot the name... perhaps siguro di na fresh sa draft... i didn't finish the glass since may option naman for something else kasi drink all you can doon sa resort during that particular conference.

Western beer... guinness is yummy!

tell me about it. i was on one of those bus tours thus my not getting around that much. Europe practically went by in a blur...the beers that i did try straight from the brewery were absolutely exquisite though....

USA - the commercial beers are generally terrible. Beck's is a German import. Not that it's any better. Of the commercially available beers, Sam Adams is perhaps the best. Closely follwed by Henry Weinhardt's. Some others are coming on the scene but they'r not widespread yet.

i gotta try this stuff. its hard when your hosts just adore their buds and savor their miller time that you just have to play along.....i would love to find a relatively small brewing operation and try the stuff out. reminds me of drew carrey's buzz beer.

Italy and France - next time, try Stella Artois and let me know what you think of this stuff.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

will do but you gotta' teach me how to pronounce it first (artwah?) but i don't think i will be going back to europe anytime soon though but i made a promise to myself that i will definitely go back in this lifetime. now i have another reason to add to my long list. try out stella artois and tell you about it :)

maraming salamat sa iyong pagdalaw sa aking munnting thread master "I.T."

havent tried Tiger beer yet though.

i have tried Foster's although i havent been to Australia yet. OK naman siya.
I was waiting for a table at Outback Steakhouse so pinagtripan muna namin ng brother ko yung Foster's while waiting at the bar. I had my then 2 year old daughter with me so i sat her on the bar itself while enjoying the beer. is that cool or just plain sick? sabi ko nga sana kunan ako ng picture eh, ok na cover for parenting magazine! hahahaha

i am also a fan of cerveza negra

yun nga lang whenever i order it at some bars, nakakaisa lang ako because more often than not, old stock ang mga cerveza negra nila kasi hindi siya ganun ka fast moving. maiinis ka lang kasi spoiled na yung lasa ng beer eh ang sarap sarap pa naman ng cerveza negra.

You got it! Artwah! So now you havbe to try it and let me know.

I saw it on the menu around here (of course, now i can't remember where......) but you gotta figure that if it's botlled then it has to come all this way, it's been banged around, got a suntan, been abused, etc. How good can it be? Gotta try it at the source! Sounds like a good reason for a trip!

Mga nasubukan ko na:

SMB's Pale Pilsen, Light, Super Dry, Blue Ice, Cerveza Negra, Red Horse, Gold Eagle, Texas Beer. SMB also distributes Miller but I'm not sure if its locally brewed.

Asia Brewery's Beer na Beer, Colt 45, Lonestar Light. ABI also distributes Budweisser... I doubt if its locally brewed.

I've tried Corona and Dos Equis here in RP.

And in my few stints abroad:
Jamaica - Red Stripe (their local beer), Heiniken & Guiness (both imported)
Cuba - Cerveza Crystal
Hongkong - SMB pa rin
Malaysia - I forgot, it was a forgettable experience

Beer na Beer, Lonestar Light and Gold Eagle are the worst

Super Dry and Corona are my favorites, but I normally drink San Mig Light -- low calorie daw, same alcohol content. Biktima ng marketing. hehe
