Manual Or Automatic?

has anyone tried SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox)? its an automatic transmission that lets you shift manually through buttons or paddles, like f1. i think its a monstrously expensive system in a car. any feedback from users?

both my '99 land rover discovery and my '04 mini cooper let me work my way through the gears if i want to, or drive in full automatic, which is what my wife does. in fact, most new cars i see have this feature. porsche had this feature (they call it tiptronic) starting way back in the late '80s.

 

i have automatics in all my cars, even the land rover. turns out it's much, much easier to control when climbing over rocks and tree stumps and the like and not having to think about the clutch lets you think about more important stuff, like choosing the best path through the muck and mire, boulders and trees. and for commuting, it's much less work, much less tiring and much less stressful.

automatic...don't trust myself with manual...it seems so daunting for me to be shifting gears

and I wanna be able to do other things while driving...like putting make-up on and other things..hehehehe

Automatics just get better and better. Tiptronic comes close to emulating manual transmission and given just a little bit more time there shouldn't be a difference.

With Metro Manila traffic like this? Automatic is best. You may spend a bit more on gas but its worth it for the reduced Hassle factor.

I find automatic a real bore to drive, and an insult to SUVs. You can't feel the power surging in an automatic, just speed and the monotonous drone of the engine.

Manual - i prefer to have more control. Already tried automatic (Galant VR automatic). YOu cant just jump start an automatic. You need to have a cable. I remember once nadiskarga yung battery ko sa isang liblib na lugar kasama mga chicks. Nag ka problema talaga kami.

manual for me... eventhough matraffic dito sa metro manila, i still prefer a manual transmission over an automatic. I have better control on the speed, and the acceleration... specially when overtaking, and sudden stops where in i can use an engine-brake... plus, i don't get sleepy driving a manual transmission vehicle...

BMW's SMG system is a good compromise. Pero medyo jerky pa rin.

Automatic for me not only for city driving pero malaki na rin kasi ang advances sa technology. Except for sports cars, manual transmission is no longer adviseable to have when you're driving a car for regular business/pleasure use.
