McDavid outduels Eichel in Oilers' OT win

No. 1 pick in 2015 scores twice to beat Sabres

McDavid's overtime winner EDM@BUF: McDavid's second goal of night wins it in OT

3/1/16: Connor McDavid backhands a shot past Robin Lehner in overtime for his second goal of the night, winning the game for the Oilers

BUFFALO - Connor McDavid scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:12 left in overtime, to help the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center on Tuesday.

McDavid's second goal came on a rush up the right wing side in which he put a backhand shot past Sabres goalie Robin Lehner for his 12th goal of the season.

McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, scored moments after Sabres rookie Jack Eichel, the No. 2 selection, rushed against Oilers goalie Cam Talbot and put a spinning backhand shot wide. McDavid picked up the puck following that shot and took it the rest of the way for the goal.

This was the first time McDavid and Eichel faced each other in the NHL; McDavid missed the first game between the Oilers and Sabres on Dec. 6 because of a fractured clavicle.

Edmonton (24-34-7) has won back-to-back games. Buffalo (25-31-8) has lost two straight and four of its past five.

OTTAWA - Jaden Schwartz had a goal and two assists and Patrik Berglund scored the only goal in the shootout, and the St. Louis Blues defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 at Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday.

The Blues (37-20-9) saw the Senators (30-27-7) rally from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game on a pair of goals by Jean-Gabriel Pageau in the final 2:41 of the third period, the second with .01 remaining.

Bergeron's go-ahead PPG CGY@BOS: Bergeron puts Bruins back on top with PPG

3/1/2016: Patrice Bergeron waits for the pass from Ryan Spooner and then sends a one-timer past the goalie to give the Bruins the lead late

BOSTON -- Patrice Bergeron scored a tie-breaking power-play goal with 3:24 remaining in the third period to give the Boston Bruins a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames at TD Garden on Tuesday.

Calgary was assessed a bench minor for having too many men on the ice with 4:07 to play. The Bruins' power play had been 0-for-4 and hadn't scored in a goal in Boston's previous four games. But Bergeron capitalized on Boston's fifth chance of the night when he beat Joni Ortio with a one-timer from the high slot after a pass from the right half-wall by Ryan Spooner.

It was Bergeron's 24th goal of the season.

"I think tonight was one of those games where we needed to come up big ... we had to make a play at some time," Bergeron said. "It was late in the game and it was an important goal, obviously. I think we had a few good looks and chances, but at the end of the day you've got to bear down and put the puck in the back of the net."

Nordstrom's go-ahead goal CAR@NJD: Nordstrom slams home rebound for the lead

3/1/16: Joakim Nordstrom finds the rebound on Elias Lindholm's shot, snapping the puck home to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead late in the 3rd

NEWARK, N.J. -- Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters knows winning might be the only remedy for a rather quiet dressing room the past two days following the NHL Trade Deadline.

The Hurricanes certainly felt good about themselves Tuesday when Joakim Nordstrom scored with 1:29 remaining to help end a three-game losing streak in a 3-1 victory against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center.

The win was the first for the Hurricanes since general manager Ron Francis traded former captain Eric Staal to the New York Rangers on Sunday for a prospect and two second-round draft picks. Staal had served as Hurricanes captain since the 2009-10 season.

"I think it's been quiet more so for the guys who have been around here his whole career," Peters said. "I've only been here for two years, but I'll tell you what -- Eric Staal was a big piece, a 6-foot-4 centerman and we're going to miss him obviously and New York will benefit from the acquisition, but that's the reality of the situation we're in right now."

Hickey's go-ahead goal NYI@VAN: Hickey fires it past Markstrom for the lead

3/1/16: Thomas Hickey fires the puck from the point through traffic, sneaking it past Jacob Markstrom to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead

VANCOUVER -- The way things were going for the New York Islanders on Tuesday, defenseman Thomas Hickey wasn't going to pass up the chance to direct a shot towards the net, even if the puck was rolling towards him at the point.

Hickey scored the go-ahead goal with 7:05 left in the third period and Thomas Greiss made 31 saves to help the Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena despite being outshot 33-24 and outplayed for long stretches.

Daniel Sedin tied the game 2-2 on a sharp-angled shot with 9:08 left in the third period, but Hickey restored the lead 2:03 later with a shot that deflected off Vancouver defenseman Christopher Tanev in the slot and went past goalie Jacob Markstrom.

"When you see a rolling puck like that, they say just shoot it," Hickey said. "Oftentimes you sort of flub it when it's rolling that much, but it had eyes."

Niederreiter finishes tic-tac-toe CHI@MIN: Niederreiter completes Wild's pretty passing

2/21/16: Jason Pominville starts a pretty tic-tac-toe passing setup for the Wild, as Nino Niederreiter lights the lamp for a three-goal lead

MINNEAPOLIS -- It was a moment the State of Hockey had waited for ever since Minnesota re-entered the League 15 seasons ago.

The first professional hockey game held outdoors in the state on Sunday was everything Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold had envisioned when he petitioned for the type of outdoor event that exemplifies what is near and dear to every Minnesotan.

In the end, the Wild capped it off with a 6-1 win against the rival Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series Game before 50,426 at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

It became evident that by the time the State of Hockey anthem was played and those in attendance were serenading their team with chants of 'Let's Go Wild!', Minnesota had long drained whatever life remained in the Blackhawks.

Perhaps Brooks Suter, the 5-year-old son of Wild defenseman Ryan Suter, summed it up best when asked by a reporter his favorite part of the day while sitting on dad's lap during the postgame press conference.

Dumba opens the scoring CHI@MIN: Dumba nets juicy rebound for an early lead

"The win," he said.

Minnesota's third line of Erik Haula centering left wing Nino Niederreiter and right wing Jason Pominville combined for three goals and eight points. Pominville had a goal and two assists.

"Our line has been playing with confidence," Pominville said. "I think at one point [in the season] I was just thinking too much and not going out there and playing. And I just said go out there and play and have fun and that's what we've been doing."

Along with Pominville, Haula also had a goal and two assists to equal the record for points in a regular-season outdoor NHL game achieved by seven other players. Matt Dumba, Thomas Vanek and Ryan Carter also scored for the Wild (27-22-10), who extended their franchise-best streak of scoring five goals in a game to four straight games.

Goaltender Devan Dubnyk, who made 31 saves for the Wild, had his shutout end with 7:55 left in the third when Patrick Kane scored along the goal line below the right circle. The goal by Kane was his 35th of the season for the Blackhawks (38-19-5).

3/3/16: Mikko Koivu slams in a goal off the shoulder of the goalie to tie the game up in the 2nd period, his 14th goal, on a power play

TORONTO -- The Minnesota Wild scored two power-play goals to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 at Air Canada Centre on Thursday.

The Wild power play has scored 13 goals in the past 11 road games; it scored in six of the first 22 road games.

"We have to keep doing that," said Mikael Granlund, who scored the game-winning goal. "Right now our confidence on the PP is way up. I don't know if we are doing anything special. It's just the way it goes; sometimes the pucks go in and sometimes they don't. When you have the confidence in your power play that is a huge thing."

The Wild (30-25-10) have won three in a row. The Maple Leafs (21-32-10) have lost four in a row and five of six.

DENVER -- Jaromir Jagr got his 1,850th NHL point in the first period to tie Gordie Howe for third place in NHL history, but Colorado Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard made 38 saves in a 3-2 win against the Florida Panthers at Pepsi Center on Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA -- There must be something about the Philadelphia Flyers that brings out the best in Cam Talbot

The Edmonton Oilers goalie made 35 saves, including 16 in the second period, in a 4-0 win against the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Thursday. The shutout was Talbot's third in five career games against Philadelphia.

"I don't know what it is," said Talbot, who is in his first season with Edmonton after playing his first two in the NHL with the New York Rangers. "I felt pretty comfortable again tonight. Penalty k*ll did a heck of a job in front of me, and it's a big two points for this group tonight."

Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall, Patrick Maroon and Lauri Korpikoski scored for Edmonton (25-34-7), which has won three in a row, its longest streak since winning six straight Dec. 2-14. The Oilers have won consecutive road games for the first time since Oct. 17 and 18; they defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in overtime Tuesday.

BUFFALO -- The Buffalo Sabres got an awakening from their offense to help continue a long-running home winning streak against the Calgary Flames.

Marcus Foligno had a goal and two assists and Jack Eichel scored his 18th goal of the season to help the Sabres to a 6-3 win against the Flames at First Niagara Center on Thursday.

The Sabres are 10-0-2 against the Flames since Calgary's last regulation win in Buffalo on March 15, 1996.

Buffalo scored six goals in a game for the third time this season and for the first time since Feb. 12. The Sabres scored four goals in their past four games before they broke out against the Flames.

"When you're scoring, it's a lot of fun," Foligno said. "That's obviously great when you keep the goals down on your side. You never want to get in one of those 6-5 games, but tonight was a tough battle. That team was actually playing pretty well.

Bruins' Julien matches franchise record in win vs. Blackhawks

Victory was 387th with Boston, tying Art Ross for most in team history

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien tied Art Ross for the most wins in franchise history with 387, and Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks at TD Garden on Thursday.

Julien is in his ninth season with Boston. His record with the Bruins is 387-215-85. Ross was 387-290 with 95 ties in 17 seasons behind the Bruins' bench.

"The thing that comes to mind is humbling," said Julien, who is 506-301-10-108 in his career, including parts of three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens and 79 games with the New Jersey Devils in 2006-07. "It really is humbling because this guy here, I said that before, he's an icon, he's a legend. I don't have a trophy named after me. Those are all things that there's a big difference between Art Ross and myself, and the fact that I've avoided being fired for the last nine years helps get that many wins here. So just feel fortunate and most of all obviously humbled by that achievement.

Ryan Spooner and Loui Eriksson also scored and Tuukka Rask made 25 saves for the Bruins (36-23-6), who won consecutive home games for the first time since Dec. 16-20. The Bruins defeated the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Tuesday.

Jonathan Toews and Tomas Fleischmann scored for the Blackhawks (40-21-5) and goaltender Scott Darling made 21 saves. Chicago had won back-to-back games, including a 5-2 road victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

Penguins use big second period to defeat Rangers

Penguins score two in 21 seconds NYR@PIT: Crosby, Malkin net goals 21 seconds apart

3/3/16: Sidney Crosby gets the Penguins on the board in the 2nd, then Evgeni Malkin scores 21 seconds later to give the Penguins the lead

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins used a late surge in a contentious second period to defeat the New York Rangers 4-1 at Consol Energy Center on Thursday.

Following a slow first period, the crowd ignited 6:17 into the second period when Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist dropped his stick and shoved the net off its moorings. Lundqvist was visibly upset after a collision with Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh and was called for delay of game, giving Pittsburgh a power play that Penguins forward Phil Kessel cut short with a slashing call 1:09 later.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said he doesn't believe Lundqvist's injury to be serious. Lundqvist experienced neck spasms stemming from the McDonagh collision, which caused New York to pull him following the second. Vigneault said he thinks Lundqvist shoved the net in an attempt to get the referee's attention to inform him of his injury.

"I don't know if the signals didn't cross or whatever, but obviously the referee didn't pick up on it," Vigneault said. "And he wasn't feeling right at that time, so he decided to stay in but couldn't finish the game. … I didn't know [Lundqvist was hurt]. Nobody knew. I don't think [Lundqvist] made it very clear to the referee either, at that time. So, we knew that when we came in from the second that he was having issues with his neck there, but at that time, we didn't."

Chris Kreider snuck a wrist shot between goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's blocker and the right post to give New York (37-21-6) a 1-0 lead with 3:10 remaining in the second.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Anaheim Ducks tied a franchise record with their 10th straight victory, 5-1 against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Corey Perry assisted on goals by Jamie McGinn and Rickard Rakell on Anaheim's first two shots, 46 seconds apart in the first period. He scored his 28th goal and fifth in the past three games to cap a three-goal second period for the Ducks.

Anaheim (36-19-8) matched the franchise record winning streak set Dec. 6-28, 2013. The Ducks are 11-0-1 in their past 12 games and 17-1-1 in their past 19, earning 35 of a possible 38 points during that span. They are 24-4-2 since the Christmas break.

3/3/16: Brent Burns picks up the puck and wrists one past Ryan Miller to score a game-tying goal early in the 3rd period

VANCOUVER -- Trailing by a goal heading into the third period Thursday, the San Jose Sharks didn't have to look back too far to know they could come back against the Vancouver Canucks.

Defensemen Brent Burns tied it 43 seconds into the third period, and Patrick Marleau scored the go-ahead goal less than five minutes later to help San Jose to a 3-2 victory at Rogers Arena. It was the Sharks' second win against the Canucks in Vancouver in five days, each coming after trailing by a goal entering the third period.

"We have done it a few times now, so we know we can do it," Marleau said. "You don't want to be toying with it that many times. We play a certain way we know we are going to get our chances. It's just a matter of burying those chances and sticking with it."

Kopitar's goal opens scoring MTL@LAK: Kopitar opens scoring on deflection

3/3/16: Alec Martinez fires a shot which is deflected by Anze Kopitar that enters the back of the net, putting the Kings up 1-0 in the 1st

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Kings were working for the weekend.

Anze Kopitar , Tanner Pearson and Dwight King scored and the surging Kings defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 at Staples Center on Thursday.

The Kings (38-21-4) won for the fifth time in six games to retain first place in the Pacific Division. Los Angeles and the Anaheim Ducks have 80 points entering their game Saturday at Staples Center; the Kings are first because they have three more regulation/overtime victories.

"It's going to be the biggest game of the year," King said. "Everybody knows that going in, obviously. Everybody knows what's on the line. Everybody's aware of that. So it's going to be, pretty much, playoff hockey."

It was the seventh one-goal game in the past 10 for Los Angeles, which scored more than two goals for the first time in six games.

"It's a step in the right direction," King said. "Obviously the win is the only thing that matters. As long as we've got everyone building more confidence [with] 20 more games left or so heading into the playoffs."

COLUMBUS - Every time the Edmonton Oilers thought they had pulled back into the game after allowing two early goals, the Columbus Blue Jackets responded.

The result was a 6-3 victory for the Blue Jackets who scored within 43 seconds of each Oilers' goal.

"The goals against were all at a really bad time," Edmonton center Leon Draisaitl said. "That's unacceptable."
