Ovi notches hat trick WSH@MIN: Ovi notches hat trick before the 3rd period

2/11/16: Alex Ovechkin lights the lamp three times before the 3rd period against the Wild, notching his first hat trick of the season

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin was lucky and good against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

Ovechkin combined his skill and his penchant for being in the right place at the right time into his 14th NHL hat trick, and the Capitals held off the Wild 4-3 at Xcel Energy Center.

Ovechkin scored all three of his goals in the second period for his first three-goal game since Dec. 13, 2013. It was the first time that Ovechkin scored three goals in the same period since March 3, 2008.

"My parents actually called me [probably a couple weeks ago] and said, 'It's time for you to get a hat trick," Ovechkin said. "It's a good feeling. Obviously, when you get the second one it's pretty cool, but when you have three goals in one game, it's kind of special."

Ovechkin overtook Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks for the NHL goal-scoring lead with 34.

Pearson's two goals lead Kings past Sabres

Enroth makes 23 saves to shut out former team

by Curtis Zupke / NHL.com Correspondent

February 28th, 2016
cut.jpg

LOS ANGELES -- Jhonas Enroth doesn't get many chances to play, let alone play against his former team. He made the most of his opportunity on Saturday.

Enroth made 23 saves, Tanner Pearson scored two goals, and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 at Staples Center.

The Kings (37-20-4) won their fourth straight and have scored two goals in each game of the streak. They are four points ahead of the Anaheim Ducks in the race for first place in Pacific Division. The teams play Sunday at Honda Center.

The Sabres (25-31-7) went 1-2-0 on a three-game California trip.

Enroth, who played for the Sabres from 2009-10 to 2014-15, earned his seventh career shutout and first win since Jan. 24.

"It means a lot, even though my feelings for them kind of fade away," said Enroth, who was traded by Buffalo to the Dallas Stars on Feb. 15, 2015, and signed with the Kings last summer as a free agent. "It's been a while since I played for them. Definitely feels good to beat your old team, especially to get a shutout. I'm going to try to build on this and try to make this something positive."

2/27/16: Mika Zibanejad fights in front to complete his improbable hat trick, giving the Senators a 5-4 lead in the 3rd period

CALGARY -- Mika Zibanejad had a natural hat trick in 2:38 in the third period to help the Ottawa Senators rally for a 6-4 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday.

"We really needed this one," Zibanejad said. "We talked about it before we went out there in the third. We talked about how important this game was for us. We really needed this win. We had to win. It's nice to come out with two points here."

Zack Smith, Nick Paul and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored, and Craig Anderson made 34 saves for the Senators (30-27-6), who have won five of their past six games.

Zibanejad's hat trick, the first of his NHL career, was the fastest in Senators history. Marian Hossa held the record at 7:05, set Jan. 2, 2003.

"I heard about it," Zibanejad said. "It's always special to be able to do that. It's cool."

Richards goal lifts Red Wings past Avalanche

Outdoor-game veteran breaks tie with 1:00 left in third period

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

February 28th, 2016
cut.jpg

DENVER -- High winds and fake snow squalls that created a unique cotton blizzard didn't taint a big hockey night in the Mile High City. The Detroit Red Wings did that instead.

Brad Richards, playing in his fifth NHL outdoor game, scored with 1:00 left to break a tie and help the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Colorado Avalanche 5-3 in front of 50,095 at Coors Field in the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game Saturday.

Richards came in from the side, got the rebound of Niklas Kronwall's shot and managed to chip the puck up, off and over Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov for his seventh goal of the season to give Detroit a 4-3 lead.

"I'd be lying if I told you I tried to put it in," Richards said. "I just kind of chipped it toward the net, he was kind out of position, and I don't know if it hit his back or something, but we'll take those."

2/27/16: Max Pacioretty one times a pass from Andrei Markov past Jonathan Bernier to give the Canadiens a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens are more focused on keeping alive their slim hopes of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs than tying their longest winning streak against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Max Pacioretty scored two goals, and Mike Condon made 31 saves to give Montreal a 4-1 win against Toronto at Bell Centre on Saturday.

Alex Galchenyuk and Devante Smith-Pelly scored for the Canadiens (30-27-5), who swept the four-game season series against the Maple Leafs.

Montreal has 65 points, five behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens, who begin a four-game road trip at the San Jose Sharks on Monday, are 3-0-1 in their past four, including a 4-3 win at the League-leading Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

"We've just got to string together some games here, and we've done that the last four, getting some points, and we've just got to keep it rolling, and the challenge will only get harder as we head out to the west," Condon said.

Klein's go-ahead goal NYR@DAL: Klein gives Rangers the lead late in the 3rd

2/26/16: Kevin Klein snipes in the go-ahead goal late in the 3rd period to put the Rangers ahead, 3-2

DALLAS -- Defenseman Kevin Klein scored the tie-breaking goal with 2:53 remaining in the third period, Henrik Lundqvist made 36 saves and New York Rangers defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 at American Airlines Center on Saturday.

Klein broke a 2-2 tie when he scored his sixth goal of the season, a wrist shot from the slot that went past the catching glove of Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen.

Chris Kreider and Ryan McDonagh also scored for New York (36-20-6), which won for the fourth time in five games overall and the fifth time in six road games.

"I think we played a pretty solid game," Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi said. "We played a pretty solid game against really one of the best teams in the West. I was real happy with getting both these games [at St. Louis and Dallas] on this road trip here."

Klein's goal came 1:08 after Stars forward Valeri Nichushkin scored to tie the game. Colton Sceviour, who assisted on Nichushkin's goal, scored in the second period for Central Division-leading Dallas (38-19-6), which has lost back-to-back games at home.

Hagelin's second goal WPG@PIT: Hagelin nets his second goal of the game

2/27/16: Carl Hagelin slips a shot backdoor past the stick and left pad of Michael Hutchinson to increase the Penguins' lead to three goals

PITTSBURGH -- Carl Hagelin scored twice, Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves, and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 at Consol Energy Center on Saturday.

After struggling to generate any offense in the first period, Pittsburgh (31-21-8) scored twice in the first 51 seconds of the second to take a 2-0 lead.

The surge began with defenseman Kris Letang's 10th goal of the season 28 seconds into the second. Forward Patric Hornqvist carried the puck into the offensive zone and slid a pass back to Letang with Chris Kunitz occupying Jets defenseman Toby Enstrom, which provided a lane for Letang's slap shot to get through to goalie Michael Hutchinson, who failed to make a save.

Hagelin pushed the Penguins lead to 2-0 23 seconds later by tipping defenseman Ian Cole's slap shot under Hutchinson's glove.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said he was impressed by Pittsburgh's line of Evgeni Malkin centering right wing Phil Kessel and Hagelin upon Malkin's return from a lower-body injury that forced him to miss 10 games.

NASHVILLE -- Filip Forsberg's second natural hat trick in the past three games and Pekka Rinne's fourth shutout propelled the Nashville Predators to a 5-0 win against the St. Louis Blues at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday.

Nashville (31-21-11) has won four games in a row and has at least one point in nine consecutive games (6-0-3).

Forsberg scored three times in the second period, his 24th, 25th and 26th, equaling his goals total from his rookie season last season. He passed defenseman Roman Josi for the Predators lead in points with 46. Forsberg had 63 points last season.

"I'm just trying to shoot everything I guess," Forsberg said. "Obviously [Predators forward Mike Ribeiro] made a few really nice plays, [Predators forward Craig Smith] made a great drop play there too. I'm just trying to get open I guess is the biggest thing.

Giroux leads Flyers by Coyotes in return from injury

Go-ahead goal in 4-2 win is captain's 500th NHL point

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers depend on captain Claude Giroux to make an impact, and he provided one in his return to the lineup Saturday against the Arizona Coyotes at Wells Fargo Center.

Giroux, in his first game back after a three-game absence because of an upper-body injury, scored the go-ahead goal in the first period and helped the Flyers to a 4-2 victory.

Late in the first, on the Flyers' third power play of the period, Giroux snapped a wrist shot from the left circle past Coyotes goalie Louis Domingue to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. The goal was the 500th point of Giroux's NHL career.

Giroux's strong game was even more important in the absence of second-leading scorer Jakub Voracek, who was out Saturday because of a lower-body injury. He is considered day-to-day. Voracek had played in 286 consecutive games. He last missed a game March 11, 2012.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- For the second consecutive Sunday, Erik Haula scored a breakaway goal. Only this time the puck went in the net.

Haula's goal with 9:31 remaining in the third period helped the Minnesota Wild to a 3-1 victory against the Florida Panthers at Xcel Energy Center.

It was Haula's eighth goal of the season and first in seven days; he had a breakaway in the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game against the Chicago Blackhawks last Sunday but was hauled down en route. The puck never went in the net, but he was credited with a goal.

His goal against the Panthers took considerably more effort.'

With the game tied at 1-1, Haula stripped Panthers defenseman Dmitri Kulikov of the puck inside the Florida offensive zone, poked it through neutral ice, and then split a pair Panthers players. Haula beat goaltender Roberto Luongo with a forehand shot under the crossbar.

CHICAGO -- The Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks made sure their game at United Center on Sunday lived up to the hype as a possible sneak peek of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

The Blackhawks fended off a late push by the Capitals, winning 3-2 in a game that had end-to-end action, solid defense and big saves by Washington goalie Braden Holtby (20 saves) and Chicago's Corey Crawford (28 saves).

A goal by Blackhawks rookie Dennis Rasmussen at 12:47 of the third period was the difference, but not before the Capitals sparked a dramatic finish on a power-play goal by Evgeny Kuznetsov at 16:39. Kuznetsov scored five seconds into what became a 6-on-3 advantage with Holtby pulled for an extra skater, forcing Chicago to preserve a one-goal lead by killing the remaining 1:55 of the power-play.

"We got a key goal there to go up by two, and then you're looking at a 6-on-3, and they score instantly on a great power play," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "We had to hold our breath a little bit there trying to get that last k*ll, but it was effective for us and it turned out it could've been the difference in getting it to overtime."

Hornqvist's hat trick lifts Penguins over Coyotes

Forward has four goals, seven points in past six games

by Wes Crosby / NHL.com Correspondent

PITTSBURGH - Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan described Monday as horrendous, but Patric Hornqvist, Marc-Andre Fleury and the remaining Pittsburgh Penguins would likely disagree.

Hornqvist scored his first NHL hat trick and Fleury earned his 43rd career shutout to help the Penguins defeat the Coyotes 6-0 at Consol Energy Center on Monday.

"It feels great to get that one, the first out of the way," Hornqvist said. "Hopefully there's more coming. I've been struggling to get the third goal. I think I have 20, almost 20 games with two goals and I couldn't get the third one. It's nice to get one tonight."

In his eight-year NHL career, Hornqvist had scored exactly two goals in 18 games entering Monday. He matched that total in the first period to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Forward Chris Kunitz forced a turnover behind the Arizona net and fed Sidney Crosby in the left circle, where Crosby slid a pass into the Coyotes crease. Hornqvist battled defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Michael Stone, and forward Antoine Vermette before backhanding a shot past goalie Louis Domingue 5:42 into the first.

NEW YORK -- With Eric Staal making his New York Rangers debut, they got a shorthanded goal from Derek Stepan with 2:48 remaining to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh poked the puck from Columbus defenseman Seth Jones, and Stepan broke in down left wing against goalie Joonas Korpisalo. Stepan faked, then went around Korpisalo and tucked in a forehand for his 14th goal of the season to give the Rangers (37-20-6) their fifth win in six games.

Rangers defenseman Marc Staal, the younger brother of Eric, was in the penalty box serving a tripping penalty, when the winning goal was scored.
