Like most people here, I earned my first million within 3 years of working.

 

Ang masasabi ko lang, from my experience you earn your first million through hard work and sheer frugality.

 

While my batchmates went abroad twice a year (even to countries like Australia), bought iPhones, nice shoes and nice clothes, I mostly ate at home and stuck to a few affordable clothes. My watch was a plastic casio watch and I bought shoes in Marikina. Lahat ng binili kong gadgets, entry level, and I never really bought things that I didn't need.

 

Not that I didn't want it. I wanted a lot of things but I always chose not to buy them because I never felt like I deserved big luxuries when my "for-emergency" necessities aren't still covered. My parents run a small business hence I felt guilty spending 100K for a week's trip while they toil so hard for a few thousands to pay for our bills. Sila mismo di gumagastos for their own luxuries. Always thought I had to share their burden.

 

Oo mahirap kasi you miss out on a lot of experiences na nararanasan ng batchmates mo. And yes you miss out on some social events but once you hit your first million marrealize mo na lahat ng pagttrabaho at pagtitipid mo ay worth it.

 

Hindi siya sapat para makabili ka ng bahay or Mercedes pero masarap matulog ng alam mo na kung may anong mangyari sayo o sa pamilya mo, kahit papaano may reasonable savings ka na sasalo sayo.

 

To each his/her own, pero para sakin hinding hindi ko maeenjoy ang mahal na US/EU trip knowing na kung magkasakit ako or nanay ko hindi ko alam saan ako kukuha ng pera.

For employees working in the Philippines, P1M in cash savings is a middle class achievement when you get it before the age of 30. That's 1/3 of a 1-BR condo or 1/5 of a townhouse in a middle class part of Metro Manila. It's a reminder that you're doing something right with your life. It's probably the equivalent of saving $100000 before age 30 in the U.S. which trust me most Americans don't even achieve.

 

Obviously, P1M is nothing when you're working in the Middle East, Europe or the US, but then again, $50K/year is middle-class/below middle class as well when you're working in NYC. Your $400,000 probably won't even get you a decent house in San Francisco. That's why a lot of OFWs in the US send their kids to the Philippines for college.

I am getting inspired reading all your success stories getting your First Million that I want to join in. However, mine will be a 10-year work in progress. The good news is the first year is just 3 months from completion; after that, it's just 9 years left

 

I'm on track on the first year. Savings so far is 156K with 3 months to go. Real Estate less mortgage is also on target and even understated a bit.

This is true, sobrang taas ng cost of living sa States Kaya ung iba pinapauwi na lang ang nga mga anak para dito magaral. Yun Isa na kilala ng family namin, pinauwi Yung anak from Sacramento para mag-aral sa Phils - sa Amin pa nga tumuloy na sandali eh (I actually want to bang her pa naman, Ganda eh kaso lumipat agad sa ibang town, she now studies in a State U).

 

 

But the reason also why they send them to study in Pinas is because of high quality of education, especially from the Big 4. So you get that + cheaper cost = practical sense.

 

US education and health care is just retarded.

Sana naman wag mangyari yan dito sa Australia. So far wla pa ako kakilala na pinauwi ang anak pra dyan mag aral. I would still prefer my child to study here.may "Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS)" nmn dito which is interest free loans from the government so di ako nagwo worry about university degree fees

This also goes out to everyone who have felt greatness in their bones since the day they were born, and are just so sure that they can help other people achieve their dreams.

 

Full disclosure: my first million was actually made through a combination of a lot of luck, discipline, and different revenue streams. I will only list down the most relevant ones, in my opinion.

 

Spoiler na kagad, made my first million back when I was an employee for a corporation. Of course, I did not make my first million through my salary. At least not the whole amount. But i think that's a good starting point for this story.

 

CORPORATE

First corporate job. Was lucky to be exposed to sales and brand management during my first job. Dito ko nakuha yung skills and contacts for buy and sell. Hindi ko masabi kung ilan sa first million ang ginawa ng first job na ito, pero ang takeaway ko dito is the buy and sell "business."

 

Second corporate job. Was again lucky to be part of a shift in the team's focus from their first core competency into building businesses. Learned a lot about how to start and run a business in various industries. Won't go into detail, as I would like to keep my identity private, but takeaway ko naman dito is the skill in evaluating and building businesses.

 

For corporate, it's just the standard monthly salary shenanigans. Was able to save more than half of my monthly salary to eventually invest. I decided to get into:

 

BUY AND SELL

So for buy and sell, hindi ko na sasabihin yung product. Baka makilala na ko ng former clients haha! suffice it to say that i made a lot from buying and selling. Super basic business practice of buying in bulk and selling "tingi" style. Binuhat ako ng bulk purchases. Around 25% of the first million can be directly attributed to this. I was able to sell online, mga meetup-meetup, which eventually gave me the capital to get into other things. I remember that it got to a point that I was so tired from working my day job, but I still had to brave the metro manila traffic to meet someone who would eventually not show up. Dami ko natutunan dito. More than the actual amount, I think discipline ang naturo nito sa akin.

 

BUSINESS CONSULTING

This is my bread and butter. In a nutshell, I leveraged my second job and applied the lessons towards helping other people.

 

This started out as colleagues got an idea of what I was doing for the company. Ganito yung standard na palitan.

 

colleague from marketing (CFM): Uy, ikaw gumawa ng financial projections for Business A (newest venture of the company i worked for)?

me: oo. haha!

CFM: Bakit di ka nalang magtayo ng sarili mo?

me: wala pa akong pera e. maybe next year?

CFM: Kaya mo gawin rin yan, pero pang small time lang? tipong paupahan?

me: palagay ko. ano need mo data exactly?

CFM: Kung may sense ba business-wise. Di ba ko malulugi, kailan ko mababawi pera ko, magkano dapat paikot na pera monthly?

me: Kaya naman.

CFM: Nice, libre kita dinner and beer.

 

So eventually, dinner and beer, became actual consultation fees. Eventually colleagues became referrals, relatives, friends of friends, etc.

 

More than the consultation fees, which is size-able on its own, what I found to be the most helpful about this business is the contacts and the opportunities presented. Just to give you an idea, since i was the one studying their business, I was able to tell whether or not it will be profitable, which gave me an overview of whether it would make sense to invest in it. So I started with one client...

 

BUSINESS

Me: Hey, you're looking for capital for this right?

Client: Yeah, and you'll help me out with the bank requirements, right?

Me: What if I helped you out directly?

Client: Elaborate

Me: 25% of your company for XXXX

Client: Are you serious?

Me: Here's a contract I drew up...

 

Aaaand. boom. that's how it started. Ginamit ko lahat ng natutunan ko sa mga corporate job sa pagstart and pagpapatakbo ng mga negosyo. Hindi ko actually na-realize na first million na pala, until nag lipat ako ng cash into one bank account for an business that I was planning to buy a part of. Nagulat nalang ako nung pag check ko, "whoa, may extra pa pala." haha!

 

Wala akong personal advice sa mga tao for the first million na hindi pa nasabi ng iba. Siguro pag alam ko specifically background niyo financially, baka kaya ko magbigay ng konting insights. I think it's largely a function of how you leverage all your skills, relationships, resources, etc.

 

I don't really feel like I'm "successful." Other people have been considering me as such and I'm actually writing this to try out my friend's advice to "share your story to the world." Whatever that means. So first step lang ito, I guess. Parang first million lang. Marami pa kikitain, marami pa mapagshshare-an.

I earned my first million when I was 25. From being IT Helpdesk to owning my business.

When my spa business became a hit because of my unusual process. My branches were hitting it of with 500k to 700k monthly net profit per branch. 

Those were the days. Ofcourse nowadays its exceptionally difficult to get that amount especially that I dont allow atw.

I hit my first 1M at 23 (2009). A large US firm hired me as technical IT manager of their global financial systems. I also started stock trading at that age which gave me around 80K a month in addition to my salary and stock options in that company.

That same year, I started a business with my then GF (now wife). That business has since took off as well with 8-9 digits yearly contracts from telcos, financial institutions, and casinos to name a few industries. Then we started putting up other businesses after getting married.

Hit it this year after saving 1K euros a month since 2.5 years back. It's way less than a million now since nag invest sa Top Shot then the values crashed and preparing for my wedding as well. 😅

saved up my first million when I was 28 (btw I worked late, 25 na nagstart)

i still remember buhay daga ako nun trying to save as much as I can. I was just earning around 40K net that time every month. So ginagawa ko I save half and buong bonus napupunta sa savings. Feel ko nga my cheapness that time was also a cause na palpak dating ko that time, kasi sino ba naman may gusto sa kuripit na lalake.

ang masasabi ko lang parang snowball yan, the more money you have, the more money gets easier over time. Parang from 1M in 28, I saved 4M when I was 30, tapos 9M when I was 32, and so on.

I worked my ass to earn my first million only to blow it up on a failed business venture. I worked my ass for my second million. I was wise then and learned from my mistakes before and still blew my money up on another venture. This cycle continued till i finally got a successful one. Never give up. Especially when you are young. You will eventually find success as long as you work hard.

First million was when I was 24. Used to work as Tech and L2  Helpdesk for 5 years before venturing out WFM. Back then Upwork was still Odesk though I found my clients in Craigslist. 

Then after that, I put up my spa business. First it was legit. It was so difficult. Prospering yes but stressful. Eventually, I've been with Midas. Then I transitioned my clean spa with espa.

I was 24 by then. I earned my first million when I was 24ish as an espa owner.
